Book excerpt: By employing prefabricated bridge elements and systems, Accelerated Bridge Construction reduces on-site construction time and traffic disruptions, and enhances long-term performance. ABC is particularly advantageous for short-span bridges that are well-suited to standardized prefabrication. In such cases, the entire superstructure and substructure can often be constructed using prefabricated deck elements, modular decks, or systems that span the full bridge width. The construction methods can range from traditional crane installations to Self-Propelled Modular Transport units or slide-in techniques for moving the entire superstructures. This book introduces the concept of ABC and examines its application in the context of short-span bridge construction. It categorizes and details short-span bridges based on various criteria and evaluates the performance of the existing bridges. Decision-making processes regarding the adoption of ABC, choice of elements, systems, and construction methods are also discussed. Additionally, the book covers the inspection of short-span bridges and includes a design example.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerated bridge construction methods can help increase safety and minimize the inconveniences to the traveling public. Many new construction methods have been investigated and implemented using prefabricated subassemblies on bridges. These methods have shown great promise because prefabricated components can be produced in a controlled environment, resulting in superior products that both allow for expedited construction schedules and display robust, durable performance. The most critical field construction process for prefabricated subassemblies is the completion of the connections. Short-term construction-related issues along with long-term serviceability problems have been attributed to a variety of causes, including construction techniques, materials, and poor designs. This research effort investigated the performance of a variety of different material categories that may be used in field-cast highway infrastructure connections. The objective of this research is to evaluate grout-type materials for potential use in field-cast connections deployed as part of the prefabricated bridge elements and systems (PBES) bridge construction concept. Topics investigated included mechanical strength, shrinkage, bond strength, durability, and cost.

Book excerpt: In recent years, bridge engineers and researchers are increasingly turning to the finite element method for the design of Steel and Steel-Concrete Composite Bridges. However, the complexity of the method has made the transition slow. Based on twenty years of experience, Finite Element Analysis and Design of Steel and Steel-Concrete Composite Bridges provides structural engineers and researchers with detailed modeling techniques for creating robust design models. The book’s seven chapters begin with an overview of the various forms of modern steel and steel–concrete composite bridges as well as current design codes. This is followed by self-contained chapters concerning: nonlinear material behavior of the bridge components, applied loads and stability of steel and steel–concrete composite bridges, and design of steel and steel–concrete composite bridge components. Constitutive models for construction materials including material non-linearity and geometric non-linearity The mechanical approach including problem setup, strain energy, external energy and potential energy), mathematics behind the method Commonly available finite elements codes for the design of steel bridges Explains how the design information from Finite Element Analysis is incorporated into Building information models to obtain quantity information, cost analysis
