Another consistent finding in research, although not as widely addressed by the media or other sources of public information, is the revictimization of childhood sexual abuse survivors. While studies have shown that sexual revictimization is prevalent and in need of further attention, little has been done to examine why this phenomenon occurs. This study sought to examine a number of sexual revictimization theories by comparing women with no histories of sexual abuse, a history of childhood sexual abuse only, a history of adult sexual abuse only, and a history of both childhood and adult sexual victimization on a number of measures. The hypotheses stated that women who report revictimization would also report lower self-esteem, more external locus of control, increased use of alcohol and drugs, more dissociative symptoms, and more hyper-feminine attitudes than either women with no sexual abuse history or women with a history of childhood sexual abuse only. Results from this study did not support these hypotheses but did reveal interesting and unexpected findings regarding women reporting a history of adult sexual abuse only.

Book excerpt: The current study was a prospective examination of the potential predictors of sexual victimization in women with and without sexual victimization histories. Utilizing a longitudinal design, we investigated sexually risky behavior, sexual sensation seeking, and substance use disordered behavior with regard to the later experience of sexual victimization during 2-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up periods. As reported previously, Time 1 data suggested that women with victimization histories were more likely to engage in sexually risky behaviors, engage in substance use disordered behavior, and were more likely to endorse higher scores of sexual sensation seeking. A statistically significant relationship was not found between these measures and later sexual victimization nor were they found to differentiate among sexually victimized and nonvictimized women at follow-up periods of 2, 6, and 12 months. Although risky sexual behavior, seeking higher rates of sexual excitement, and substance use were highly correlated with sexual victimization at Time 1, these analyses did not reveal that these variables placed women at greater vulnerability for sexual victimization at 2-, 6-, or 12-month follow-up. High attrition rates and lower rates of sample substance use and risky sexual behavior for each follow-up period may have impacted the study results. It is also possible that in any given sexual violence situation, several variables specific to the victim, perpetrator, and situation interact such that discovering unifying predictor variables is difficult. Current literature and results of our prior research suggest further investigation of interventions that target these variables to increase protective strategies in college females.

Book excerpt: The current study examined whether altered self-capacities mediate the link between child abuse and adult sexual revictimization. Data were collected from 849 female college students with anonymous surveys to assess child abuse (sexual [CSA], physical [CPA], and emotional [CEA]), adult sexual victimization (rape/attempted rape and verbal sexual coercion), and altered self-capacities (relatedness difficulties, identity impairment, and affect dysregulation). Maternal care also was examined as a contributor to adult sexual victimization given its impact on altered self-capacities. Reported experiences of adult rape and verbal coercion overlapped so substantially that three outcomes were examined: adult rape/attempted rape only, adult verbal sexual coercion only, and combined adult rape/attempt/coercion. The relationship between CSA and combined adult rape/attempt/coercion was mediated by all three altered self-capacities. However, altered self-capacities did not mediate the relationship between CPA and adult victimization. CEA was associated with altered self-capacities, but was not a significant predictor of verbal coercion only when maternal care was considered. Maternal care was the only significant predictor of adult verbal sexual coercion only when examined with all forms of child abuse and altered self-capacities. Adult rape only was not associated with child abuse or altered self-capacities. Findings indicate that altered self-capacities mediate revictimization only in the case of CSA and adult combined rape/attempt/coercion, and that maternal care is the strongest predictor of adult verbal sexual coercion. In addition, maternal care mediates the link between child abuse (all forms) and adult verbal sexual coercion. Findings support examining multiple forms of child abuse when assessing risk for sexual revictimization. Implications for intervention, including considerations for revictimization prevention on college campuses, are discussed.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual victimization is prevalent on college campuses in the US. A proportion of women experience multiple sexual assaults, and sexual assault risk in college is heightened among those with prior victimization histories. One risk factor for sexual revictimization is victims' alcohol use. Most research has focused on associations between alcohol consumption per se and revictimization. The current study's objective was to understand some potential mechanisms by which drinking confers risk for revictimization. We hypothesized specific drinking consequences would predict risk for revictimization above and beyond the quantity of alcohol consumed. A randomly selected sample of binge drinking female college students was assessed for baseline victimization (categorized as childhood versus adolescent victimization), quantity of alcohol consumed, and drinking consequences experienced. A subset of 162 women was assessed 30 days later for revictimization. Of the subset, 40 (24.6%) women were revictimized in the following 30 days. Blackout drinking at baseline predicted incapacitated sexual revictimization among women previously victimized as adolescents, after accounting for quantity of alcohol consumed. Other drinking consequences examined were not predictive of revictimization. Results support previous findings that adolescent sexual assault is an important predictor of sexual revictimization in college and blackout drinking may confer unique risk for revictimization.

Book excerpt: Sexual Assault Risk Reduction and Resistance explores the theory, research, and practice of sexual assault risk reduction, resistance education, and self-defense programs for women and other vulnerable groups, including sexual minorities, individuals with disabilities, and those with histories of victimization. Following an ecosystemic perspective, the book examines individual risk and protective factors for sexual victimization, as well as peer-, family-, community- and societal-level factors that influence risk for sexual violence and inform the content of programs. This volume brings together leading researchers and practitioners to operationalize sexual assault risk reduction approaches and highlights the rationale and need for risk reduction in the context of other sexual assault prevention efforts. The volume provides an overview of the history of this sexual assault prevention approach and addresses current controversies and questions in the field. The authors outline risk and protective factors for victimization and discuss how these factors guide risk reduction efforts. The volume also outlines the theory and effectiveness of current sexual assault risk reduction and resistance practices and addresses special populations and future directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition provides a comprehensive, social ecological review of women's rape and sexual assault disclosures and how support providers can better respond to them and challenge rape culture. Women who have been raped and sexually assaulted are often retraumatized by negative social reactions from family and friends, healthcare professionals, institutions, and society at large. Sarah Ullman educates supporters on more appropriate responses that empower survivors and help them heal. Drawing on interviews with survivors and support providers, she offers powerful, provocative insights to therapists, other frontline workers assisting survivors, researchers, and students. She reviews transtheoretical research on why, how often, and to whom women disclose; the impact of social contexts on disclosures; and social reactions from informal support networks and professionals in a variety of institutional settings. New to this edition is updated research addressing social media, social phenomena like the MeToo movement, and informal supporters' experiences with survivors. While most research still focuses on White, heterosexual, and cisgender women, emerging findings on LGBTQ+ individuals, cis males, people of color, and people with disabilities are reviewed where available.
