Image-based sexual abuse refers to the taking or sharing of nude or sexual photographs or videos of another person without their consent. It includes a diversity of behaviours beyond that of "revenge porn", such as the secret trading of nude or sexual images online; "upskirting", "downblousing" and other "creepshots"; blackmail or "sextortion" scams; the use of artificial intelligence to construct "deepfake" pornographic videos; threats to distribute photographs and videos without consent; and the taking or sharing of sexual assault imagery. This book investigates the pervasiveness and experiences of these harms, as well as the raft of legal and non-legal measures that have been introduced to better respond to and prevent image-based sexual abuse. The book draws on groundbreaking empirical research, including surveys in three countries with over 6,000 respondents and over 100 victim-survivor and stakeholder interviews. Guided by theoretical frameworks from gender studies, sociology, criminology, law and psychology, the authors argue that image-based sexual abuse is more commonly perpetrated by men than women, and that perpetration is higher among some groups, including younger and sexuality minority men. Although the motivations of perpetrators vary, a dominant theme to emerge was that of power and control. Book excerpt: This study examined the prevalence and predictors of peer sexual harassment among college undergraduates (ages 18-25) at a public university in New England. Participants (N= 147) completed online self-report measures of sexual harassment victimization and perpetration, adjustment to college, self-perceived peer liking, self-perceived popularity, and self-perceived dating popularity. Results showed that 74.8% of students reported perpetrating sexual harassment behaviors against a peer at least once since arriving at school, and 82.6% ofstudents reporting being victimized by sexual harassment from a peer since arriving at school. Logistic regression analysis showed that self-perceived peer liking, popularity, and dating popularity predicted peer sexual harassment perpetration, and dating popularity also predicted peer sexual harassment victimization. Simple regression showed that students' adjustment to college was not predicted by sexual harassment victimization or perpetration. These results suggest that peer sexual harassment is very common among college peers, and is related to measures of social status. Despite the commonality of peer sexual harassment at college,it does not appear to influence students' adjustment to school, perhaps because its commonality has led it to be normalized.

Book excerpt: Sexual violence, and sexual coercion in particular, is an understudied field, but research is beginning to show that males and females alike are perpetrators of sexual violence. Research has looked at predictors of sexual violence in males, but little research has looked at predictors of sexual violence in females. Similarly, little research has examined predictors of sexual violence in the context of dating relationships; therefore, this study examined predictors of sexual coercion in males and females within dating relationships. Using a sample of 305 male and 363 female undergraduate students' self-report surveys, hierarchical regression analyses were utilized to test the nature of the sexual coercion predictors. Seven variables (problems with alcohol, past child abuse, anger management skills, relationship satisfaction, acceptability of violence towards wives, acceptability of violence towards husbands, and sexual coercion victimization) served as the independent variables with sexual coercion perpetration as the dependent variables in all of the regression analyses. Using the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2; Straus, Hamby, Boney-McCoy, & Sugarman, 1996) to assess sexual coercion perpetration, male and female students were found to exhibit a different set of significant predictor variables in the regression analyses; however, sexual coercion victimization was a significant predictor in both data. Sexual coercion victimization predicting sexual coercion perpetration in males and females suggests that sexual coercion is bilateral and part of a systemic cycle of violence. Clinical implications and recommendations for future research are provided.

To assist the Air Force in its continued efforts to combat sexual assault within its ranks, we reviewed the existing empirical literature on the characteristics and behaviors of adult perpetrators who commit sexual assault against other adults. Our search was not limited to studies of military populations. While a vast majority of the existing literature has focused on sole male perpetrators who assault female victims, we identified some research on other types of perpetrators, including female sexual assault perpetrators, men who perpetrate assault against other men, and perpetrators who participate in group sexual assault. This body of research indicates that adult perpetrators are diverse in terms of their demographics, background characteristics, and motivations. Moreover, research indicates that sexual assault perpetration is likely influenced by a combination of factors, including an individual's developmental and family history; his or her personality, including attitudes/cognitions; and environmental factors, including peer attitudes and alcohol consumption. The complexity of factors that influence sexual assault perpetration and the multiple pathways that lead to an attack make it difficult to predict whether an individual is prone to commit sexual assault. While predicting sexual assault perpetration is problematic, we identified a number of factors related to perpetration that may be relevant for intervention efforts and offer recommendations for the Air Force"--Publisher's web site.

Book excerpt: The current study was a prospective examination of the potential predictors of sexual victimization in women with and without sexual victimization histories. Utilizing a longitudinal design, we investigated sexually risky behavior, sexual sensation seeking, and substance use disordered behavior with regard to the later experience of sexual victimization during 2-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up periods. As reported previously, Time 1 data suggested that women with victimization histories were more likely to engage in sexually risky behaviors, engage in substance use disordered behavior, and were more likely to endorse higher scores of sexual sensation seeking. A statistically significant relationship was not found between these measures and later sexual victimization nor were they found to differentiate among sexually victimized and nonvictimized women at follow-up periods of 2, 6, and 12 months. Although risky sexual behavior, seeking higher rates of sexual excitement, and substance use were highly correlated with sexual victimization at Time 1, these analyses did not reveal that these variables placed women at greater vulnerability for sexual victimization at 2-, 6-, or 12-month follow-up. High attrition rates and lower rates of sample substance use and risky sexual behavior for each follow-up period may have impacted the study results. It is also possible that in any given sexual violence situation, several variables specific to the victim, perpetrator, and situation interact such that discovering unifying predictor variables is difficult. Current literature and results of our prior research suggest further investigation of interventions that target these variables to increase protective strategies in college females.
