Book excerpt: Among the issues confronting America is long-term care for frail, older persons and others with chronic conditions and functional limitations that limit their ability to care for themselves. Improving the Quality of Long-Term Care takes a comprehensive look at the quality of care and quality of life in long-term care, including nursing homes, home health agencies, residential care facilities, family members and a variety of others. This book describes the current state of long-term care, identifying problem areas and offering recommendations for federal and state policymakers. Who uses long-term care? How have the characteristics of this population changed over time? What paths do people follow in long term care? The committee provides the latest information on these and other key questions. This book explores strengths and limitations of available data and research literature especially for settings other than nursing homes, on methods to measure, oversee, and improve the quality of long-term care. The committee makes recommendations on setting and enforcing standards of care, strengthening the caregiving workforce, reimbursement issues, and expanding the knowledge base to guide organizational and individual caregivers in improving the quality of care.
Book Synopsis Occupancy Rates, Types of Ownership, and Chain Affiliations as Predictors for Quality Scores of Nursing Homes with Medicare's Five-star Quality Rating System by : Lisa E. Oldag

Oldag and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the association of the quality of California nursing homes (based on Medicare's 2009 Five-Star Quality rating system) with occupancy rates, types of ownership, and chain affiliations of these nursing homes. Regression analyses were applied to analyze the predictive relationship between nursing home occupancy rates and their quality scores, and independent sample t-tests were conducted to study the mean differences in quality scores between types of ownership and between chain affiliations. Occupancy rates did not significantly predict overall quality ratings; however, when broken down into three specific quality categories, occupancy rates significantly predicted higher scores earned in health inspections, staffing, and quality measures. Type of ownership was a significant predictor of overall quality: nonprofit nursing homes earned higher overall quality ratings than for profit nursing homes. Chain affiliation was not a significant predictor of overall quality. The implication is that, because nursing homes are required to report their quality ratings to the public, they must seriously consider the quality of care they provide to their clients by making an effort to raise or maintain high quality ratings in order to attract new clients or retain high occupancy rates.

Book excerpt: As more people live longer, the need for quality long-term care for the elderly will increase dramatically. This volume examines the current system of nursing home regulations, and proposes an overhaul to better provide for those confined to such facilities. It determines the need for regulations, and concludes that the present regulatory system is inadequate, stating that what is needed is not more regulation, but better regulation. This long-anticipated study provides a wealth of useful background information, in-depth study, and discussion for nursing home administrators, students, and teachers in the health care field; professionals involved in caring for the elderly; and geriatric specialists.

Book Synopsis Implementing Quality Measures for Accountability in Community-Based Care for People with Serious Illness by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Implementing Quality Measures for Accountability in Community-Based Care for People with Serious Illness written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans of all ages face the challenge of living with serious illnesses such as advanced cancer, heart, or lung disease. Many people with serious illness are increasingly cared for in community settings. While the number of community-based programs to provide care for those with serious illness has grown significantly, the quality of care provided is not consistent across geographic locations or care settings. Care for the serious illness population often features gaps in coordination across sites of care and poor patient and family perceptions as to the quality of care provided. In an effort to better understand and facilitate discussions about the challenges and opportunities related to identifying and implementing quality measures for accountability purposes in community-based serious illness care, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a public workshop on April 17, 2018, in Washington, DC. Workshop participants explored the current state of quality measurement for people with serious illness, their families, and caregivers, with the aim of identifying next steps toward effectively implementing measures to drive improvement in the quality of community-based care for those facing serious illness. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
Book Synopsis Care Without Coverage by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Care Without Coverage written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

Book Synopsis Care Home Stories by : Sally Chivers
Download or read book Care Home Stories written by Sally Chivers and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Institutional care for seniors offers a cultural repository for fears and hopes about an aging population. Although enormous changes have occurred in how institutional care is structured, the legacies of the poorhouse still persist, creating panicked views of the nursing home as a dreaded fate. The paradoxical nature of a space meant to be both hospital and home offers up critical tensions for examination by age studies scholars. The essays in this book challenge stereotypes of institutional care for older adults, illustrate the changes that have occurred over time, and illuminate the continuities in the stories we tell about nursing homes.
