Book excerpt: Since 1986, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has collected information from 11th-grade students about their employment activities. Out of the 29,000 students asked about work in the 1986 assessment, 54% reported working some amount of time each week, and over 28% reported working more than 15 hours per week. Thus, of 2.9 million 11th graders questioned in 1986, an estimated 1.6 million were employed and attending school. Data in this report cover the general characteristics and academic achievement of working students included in the NAEP as well as ancillary information from other studies. Student characteristics analyzed include gender, race/ethnicity, parents' education, high school program type, mathematics and science courses taken, postsecondary expectations, absenteeism, homework time, and television viewing time. Results indicate that: (1) employment has various effects on student achievement; (2) schools vary in the amount of time and effort they demand from their students, but it appears that some teachers lower their expectations regarding working students; (3) students' jobs should be examined in terms of content compatible with youth development and achievement; and (4) where work assignments are connected to schooling objectives, work can complement, rather than compete with, schooling objectives. These Standards prompted the development of Standards-based mathematics curricula. What features characterize Standards-based curricula? How well do such curricula work? To answer these questions, the editors invited researchers who had investigated the implementation of 12 different Standards-based mathematics curricula to describe the effects of these curricula on students' learning and achievement, and to provide evidence for any claims they made. In particular, authors were asked to identify content on which performance of students using Standards-based materials differed from that of students using more traditional materials, and content on which performance of these two groups of students was virtually identical. Book excerpt: Eighth-grade students who are placed into Algebra 1 but fail end-of-course exams may experience lowered grade point averages (GPAs) and loss of motivation for math or avoid taking advanced mathematics courses in high school. Middle-achieving students present challenges in terms of mathematics placement. Self-efficacy theory and locus of control theory suggest the noncognitive traits mathematics self-efficacy (MSE) and academic locus of control (ALOC) are associated with mathematics achievement and could predict achievement in eighth-grade algebra. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether MSE, ALOC, and prior-year State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) mathematics score predict achievement in eighth-grade algebra among middle-achieving students in South Texas more accurately than prior-year STAAR mathematics scores alone. The sample included 111 eighth-grade algebra students in a large suburban school district in South Texas, whose scores on the previous year's STAAR mathematics exam fell between the 25th and 75th percentiles. MSE predicted meeting grade-level standards (R 2 = .229), performance category (R 2 = .327), and percent score on the NEISD Algebra 1 Benchmark exam (R 2 = .317). ALOC was not associated with achievement on the NEISD Algebra 1 Benchmark exam. These results suggest that predictions of achievement in eighth-grade algebra for middle-achieving students were improved with the addition of measures of MSE, but not ALOC. Suggestions for future research include developing a mathematics locus of control instrument and broader studies exploring the relationship between MSE and achievement in eighth-grade Algebra 1.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the following variables can be used to predict science achievement: English language arts achievement, mathematics achievement, socioeconomic status (SES), limited English proficiency (LEP) status, and per pupil expenditures. Data were obtained from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The unit of analysis was the campus level. Bivariate correlations were used to determine the relationship between mathematics achievement and science achievement as well as English language arts achievement and science achievement. Partial correlations were used to determine the relationship between mathematics achievement and science achievement as well as English language arts achievement and science achievement after controlling for SES, LEP status, and per pupil expenditures. Hierarchical multiple linear regression was used to examine the relationship of English language arts achievement and mathematics achievement with science achievement after controlling for socioeconomic status, per pupil expenditures, and LEP status. Bivariate and partial correlation coefficients for English language arts and mathematics achievement and mathematics achievement were significant.
