Book excerpt: This report describes two investigations of the relationship between performance on the Guard Unit Armory Device Full-Crew Interactive Simulation Trainer-Armor (GUARDFIST I) and live-fire tank gunnery performance. In the first investigation, 19 Army National Guard (ARNG) M1 tank crews completed a GUARDFIST I-based test of gunnery proficiency and then fired tank gunnery Table VIII during annual training. Results showed that crew performance on the GUARDFIST I test was unrelated to performance on Table VIII. The second investigation examined the relationship between aggregate measures of GUARDFIST I training (maximum training matrix advancement and total training time) and Table VIII scores collected 6 months later on eight ARNG M1 tank crews. Results showed that total training time was unrelated to Table VIII scores, but that maximum training matrix advancement was strongly predictive of subsequent Table VIII performance. Findings suggest that brief, one-shot tests of proficiency on GUARDFIST I have limited predictive utility, but that aggregate measures of gunnery proficiency on GUARDFIST I can be used to predict live-fire tank gunnery performance. A larger sample size is needed to substantiate the validity of this predictive relationship. Reserve component, Tank gunnery, Training devices, GUARDFIST I, Armor training, Performance prediction.

Book excerpt: To determine the relationship between scores on a device-based test of gunnery proficiency and live-fire Tank Table VIII scores, a pooled sample of 73 Army National Guard (ARNG) tank crews (i.e., 24 from Smith and Hagman (1992) and 49 from this investigation) completed a 1-hour gunnery proficiency test on the Mobile Conduct-of-Fire Trainer (M-COFT) and then fired Table VIII the next day as part of annual training. For this pooled sample, a significant correlation was found between M-COFT test and Table VIII scores (r = .67, p

Book excerpt: "Based on the analysis of gunnery scores fired by 171 M1A2 tank crews, an easy-to-use strategy was developed for predicting which crews will, and will not, first-run qualify on Tank Table VIII before all of the typically required ten engagements have been fired. Scores are added as each engagement is fired and the resulting sum is compared to tabular formatted cutoff scores established to support accurate qualification predictions. Adherence to this strategy will help Active Army armor unit commanders to maximize the efficiency of tank gunnery evaluation by reducing the number of first-run engagements fired, as well as the range time and operational tempo (OPTEMPO) resources spent in doing so, by roughly 20% without sacrificing the purpose and intent of the crew-level gunnery certification process."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: To assess performance on individual Table VIII gunnery engagements, the first run scores of 109 tank crews from three U.S. Army National Guard (ARNG) armor battalions were averaged and then ordinarily ranked for difficulty. For all three battalions, three of the four engagements found to have the lowest average scores (highest difficulty rankings) required machine gun (coax or Caliber .50) employment either alone or in combination with the main gun. In the remaining engagement of this foursome, crews were required to fire at multiple targets with the main gun using the gunner's auxiliary sight. Two of the three engagements found to have the highest average scores (lowest difficulty rankings) involved presentation of only a single target. These results can be used by ARNG armor trainers to help maximize the payoff from their training time investment by focusing on the engagements found to be the most difficult, thereby enhancing the probability of first-run crew qualification on Table VIII. Reserve component, Armor training, Tank gunnery, Table VIII.

Book excerpt: A test of M1 gunnery proficiency based on content analysis of Tank Table VIII engagement parameters was prepared for the Unit-Conduct of Fire Trainer (U-COFT). The test is composed of four U-COFT exercises comprising 23 different moving (offensive) and stationary (defensive) engagements against both moving and stationary, single and multiple targets. Special instructions were developed for U-COFT Instructors/Operators. Hit rate was identified as the most appropriate composite measure of gunnery performance. Instructions were prepared for calculating hit rate for each engagement in the test and for calculating hit rate for the test as a whole. Additional measures were identified for supplementary analyses of performance. These include firing rate, hit probability, average opening time, average miss distance, and average numbers of classification and system management errors. Use of this test should facilitate our ability to integrate research in tank gunnery and thereby increase our understanding of performance requirements in tank gunnery. (KR).

Book excerpt: This investigation reports the development of a target engagement reduction methodology that supports resource-efficient, live-fire gunnery evaluation on Tank Table VIII (TTVIII), the intermediate-level tank crew gunnery certification exercise. Through a series of multiple regression analyses, it was determined that TTVIII can be reduced from its current 16 engagements to 7 engagements. Scores on these 7 engagements can be used to predict 10-engagement-based TTVIII total scores with greater than 85% predictive accuracy. For Army National Guard (ARNG) units, the 7 engagements can be selected randomly. For Active Component (AC) units, however, the predictive subset must consist of specific engagements. For the ARNG, subsets consisting of as few as two engagements can be used to identify tank crews with little chance of achieving first-run qualification (Q1), and subsets consisting of as few as four engagements can be used to identify crews with a high probability of firing Q1. Both predictions can be made with 95% accuracy. For both the ARNG and AC, short-cut scoring models allowed the prediction of 10-engagement-based TTVIII total scores, based on subsets of any size, with calculational ease. It was concluded that more resource-efficient live-fire tank gunnery evaluation is possible in both the ARNG and AC without sacrificing evaluative validity. The magnitude of resource savings to be anticipated from use of the recommended resource-efficient methods was estimated.

Book excerpt: The Armed Forces Qualification Test, the screening test used by all the services, must provide both a measure of general military trainability and measures of specific aptitudes. Following the research design for previous forms, experimental test items in four content areas developed by the separate services were administered to 3000 Armed Forces personnel for item analysis and item selection. Final forms were then administered to standarization samples representative of the mobilization population as a basis for conversion of test scores to percentile norms. AFQT 7 and 8 correlated substantially with preceding operational forms (r = .89 - 90) and are satisfactory alternate forms for screening. Correlation of AFQT 7-8 with years of formal education (r = .53) was slightly less than for the previous forms. Because of the high degree of equivalence of the two forms (r = .94) established in samples totaling 600 cases, a single conversion table was established for AFQT 7 and 8. Based on experimentation, instructions for administering AFQT 7 and 8 have been made shorter and simpler than for previous forms, with no loss in test effectiveness. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research was undertaken to develop a model live-fire test that can be used to evaluate tank crew proficiency in neutralizing targets. The model test takes into consideration different types of target engagements, the behaviors of the individual crew members that are required and the practical constraints associated with the use of main gun ammunition for testing purposes. Existing descriptions of M60A1A0S gunnery objectives were reviewed and updated to reflect current US Army Armor School doctrine. The revised set of objectives provided a definition of the possible ways that the tank system could neutralize targets with the 105mm gun, the coaxial machinegun and the .50 caliber machinegun. The objectives also made explicit the behaviors required on the part of individual crew members during each engagement. Given a definition of the performance domain, two steps were undertaken to aid in the selection of objectives or exercises that would constitute the model gunnery test. First, all objectives were systematically examined to identify possible groups or families of objectives that were similar to one another in terms of the underlying crew behaviors involved. Families were further analyzed to generate estimates of the extent to which performance on one gunnery objective was predictive of performance on other objectives in the same family. These results, when coupled with other considerations such as the number of main gun rounds available for testing, were then used to identify a representative sample of test engagements that would yield information about crew performance on the entire domain of gunnery objectives. Issues involved in the generation and interpretation of performance test scores were also addressed.
