Book excerpt: The current study examined marital satisfaction and determined if racial identity or level of religiosity had an impact overall on marital satisfaction among married African American couples. The following instruments were used to measure marital satisfaction, racial identity, level of religiosity, and social desirability: the Marital Satisfaction Inventory- Revised (Snyder, 1997), Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (Sellers, Rowley, Chavous, Shelton, & Smith, 1998), Religious Life Inventory (Batson, Schoenrade & Ventis, 1993), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Reynolds, 1982). The majority of the 140 participants consisted of married couples recruited from three major Christian churches in Philadelphia, a local insurance company, and from multiple community based organizations. Results indicate that no single factor alone is predictive of marital satisfaction but a combination of factors produced a moderately significant multiple correlation. Significant relationships were found among marital satisfaction and the following factors: number of children, multiple subscales on the MIBI, and the external subscale on the Religious Life Inventory. Couples who had more children reported higher levels of marital satisfaction. Results also showed a significant relationship between marital satisfaction in couples who had similar views on racial identity when subscales were used as the sole measure of marital satisfaction and racial identity. Finally, there was a significant relationship between couples who report higher levels of marital satisfaction and also use religion as a means to satisfy their own needs through socialization, etc.

Book excerpt: The current study examined the relationship between religiosity, spirituality and marital satisfaction among Muslims who identified as African-American or Black to identify the best predictors of marital satisfaction. Religiosity was measured using modified versions of the subscales found in the Psychological Measure of Islam Religiousness (Raiya, 2008). Spirituality was measured using the Intrinsic Spirituality Scale (Hodge, 2003) and Marital Satisfaction was measured using a modified version of the Couples Satisfaction Index (Funk & Rogge, 2007). The study consisted of 194 participants, mainly from the east coast of the United States. Results of the study illustrate that religiosity and spirituality, as measured in this study, did not correlate with marital satisfaction. Results show strong correlations between the number of prior divorces, joint prayer with spouse and agreement on religion with marital satisfaction. Spirituality in Islam did not predict marital satisfaction better than religiosity. Marital satisfaction was predicted by the number of prior divorces - if someone was previously divorced a number of times, the chance of a future divorce was higher; joint prayer with spouse - if couples prayed more together, it indicated that they were more satisfied in their marriage; and agreement on religion - if spouses agreed with each other on religion, they enjoyed greater levels of marital satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Although there are well-established bidirectional associations between depressive symptoms and martial satisfaction among romantic couples, it is unknown whether this bidirectional association exists among Black couples, specifically, and how the nature of this relation might depend on contextual factors. To address these questions, the current study was designed to assess the prospective associations between depressive symptoms and marital satisfaction over a one-year period in a sample of 168 married or cohabitating heterosexual, Black, romantic couples and to explore moderation of these associations by (a) experiences of discrimination and (b) racial centrality within a dyadic context. Depressive symptoms predicted lower marital satisfaction for self and partner one year later, and wives satisfaction positively predicted husbands satisfaction but not vice versa. Moderation analyses revealed that, for both husbands and wives, ones own experiences of discrimination moderated the effect of ones partners satisfaction on ones own depressive symptoms but that there were different patterns for husbands and wives. Specifically, at high levels of husbands discrimination, the association between wives satisfaction and husbands depressive symptoms was negative, and the association was positive at low levels of husbands discrimination. In contrast, at high levels of wives discrimination, the association between husbands satisfaction and wives depressive symptoms was positive and was negative at low levels of wives discrimination. Wives racial centrality also moderated the effect of wives depressive symptoms on husbands subsequent satisfaction, such that the association between wives depressive symptoms and husbands satisfaction emerged at high, but not at low, levels of wives racial centrality. Findings suggest that practitioners working with African American individuals and couples should attend to the interdependence between spouses mental health and relationship satisfaction and consider the broader social context in which Black individuals and couples are situated to improve both individual and relational well-being.

Race-related stress affects African Americans/Blacks in their daily lives and relationships. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental study was to investigate the relationship between mindfulness, race-related stress, and relationship satisfaction among African Americans/Blacks. Mindfulness relationship theory and Africana womanism were used to guide the study. Survey data were collected from 51 African Americans/Black participants. Results of multiple regression analysis indicated that mindfulness was a statistically significant predictor of relationship satisfaction among African Americans/Blacks and race-related stress was not. Findings from the hierarchical moderation regression analyses indicated that race-related stress was a moderator for mindfulness and relationship satisfaction among African Americans/Blacks. Findings may be used to facilitate continued exploration of patterns of behavior, social perceptions, and social interactions related to mindfulness, race-related stress, and relationship satisfaction among African Americans/Blacks who acknowledge being in a romantic relationship."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "The decline in African Americans choosing to marry and the increase in African Americans deciding to divorce (U.S. Census, 2003) are juxtaposed against a dearth of research on African American Marriage and marital intervention models specifically tested with African Americans. Cordova and his associates attempted to expand on the 'fuzziness' of definitions of intimacy in marital research with their behavioral theory of intimacy (Cordova & Scott, 2001). They expanded this view into a model, Emotional Skillfulness Theory, of how specific emotional skills, intimacy, and marital satisfaction are related (Cordova, Gee, & Warren, 2005). Cordova, Gee, and Warren's (2005) study exploring emotional skillfulness and subsequent studies supported the basics of this model. However, like much research in the marital field, these studies were done with a predominantly Caucasian sample. The current study examined emotional skillfulness theory and the possible impact emotional skillfulness may have on martial satisfaction and the intimacy process among African Americans. Emotional skills were defined by the ability to identify and communicate emotions. Specifically, the differences between husbands' and wives' scores on measures of emotional skills, the relationship between participants' self-perceived emotional skills and one's own intimate safety and marital satisfaction, and whether intimate safety mediates between emotional skills and marital satisfaction. Two hundred and sixty four participants (132 married couples) completed measures that assessed emotional skillfulness, marital satisfaction, and intimate safety. The results supported much of Emotional Skillfulness Theory with African American couples. No significant differences were found between husbands' and wives' scores on Difficulty Identifying Emotions and Difficulty Communicating Emotions. For both husbands and wives one's own Difficulty Identifying Emotions was negatively correlated with spouses' marital satisfaction and Intimate Safety. Husbands' Difficulty Communicating Emotions was also negatively correlated to wives' Marital Satisfaction and Intimate Safety; Wives' Difficulty Communicating Emotions was negatively correlated with husbands' marital satisfaction, but was not significantly associated with husbands' Intimate Safety. Finally, it was found that Intimate Safety mediated between emotional skills and marital satisfaction."--Abstract.

Information on age, education, salary, occupation, and length of marriage was also gathered. Analysis of data from the MSI and Biographical Profile at a level of significance of.05 revealed no significant linear correlation between degree of marital satisfaction identified by African-American married couples and the variables occupation and length of marriage. the findings of the study did indicate that there is significant correlation between the degree of satisfaction identified by African-American married couples and age, education, and salary.

Book excerpt: In a time when the American family has undergone dramatic evolution, change among African Americans has been particularly rapid and acute. African Americans now marry later than any other major ethnic group, and while in earlier decades nearly 95 percent of black women eventually married, today 30 percent are expected to remain single. The black divorcee rate has increased nearly five-fold over the last thirty years, and is double the rate of the general population. The result, according to The Decline in Marriage Among African Americans, is a greater share of family responsibilities being borne by women, an increased vulnerability to poverty and violence, and an erosion of community ties. The original, often controversial, research presented in this book links marital decline to a pivotal drop in the pool of marriageable black males. Increased joblessness has robbed many black men of their economic viability, rendering them not only less desirable as mates, but also less inclined to take on the responsibility of marriage. Higher death rates resulting from disease, poor health care, and violent crime, as well as evergrowing incarceration rates, have further depleted the male population. Editors M. Belinda Tucker and Claudia Mitchell-Kernan and the contributors take a hard look at the effects of chronic economic instability and cultural attitudes toward the male role as family provider. Their cogent historical analyses suggest that the influence of external circumstances over marriage preferences stems in large part from the profoundly damaging experience of slavery. This book firmly positions declining marriage within an ominous cycle of economic and social erosion. The authors propose policies for relieving the problems associated the changing marital behavior, focusing on support for single parent families, public education, and increased employment for African American men.

In spite of the research supporting the perceived benefits of marriage, including overall emotional and physical health, decrease in stress, alcohol and drug use, and increase in lifespan, African Americans marriage rates are lower compared to White Americans. Consequently, African Americans have the highest divorce rate and the highest incidences of single-parent homes. Religiosity is often overlooked as an important component that contributes to satisfaction and enduring relationships. There is also a perceived relationship between closeness to God and romantic attachment that leads to stable, sustaining relationships characterized by secure bonds that protect against marital dissolution. This quantitative research examined the linear relationship between two independent variables closeness to God and religiosity and two dependent variables marital satisfaction and longevity for married individuals from a sample of 65 African American and 280 White participants. An analysis of covariance assessed the interaction between closeness to God and religiosity and marital satisfaction and longevity using scores obtained from the Religious Commitment Inventory and the one question adaptation of the Religiosity Salience-Cognition Scale that measures religiosity and closeness to God in African Americans and Whites. This research did not support a linear relationship between religiosity and satisfaction, religiosity and longevity, and closeness to God and longevity. The presence of neuroticism interacted with the correlation in each simple regression analyses. A weak correlation was identified between closeness to God and satisfaction and identifies African Americans have higher religiosity than Whites.

Book excerpt: Current literature suggests that culture-specific relationships exist between conflict styles and marital satisfaction; however, researchers have only focused on marriages between non-Westerners and Westerners. Very little research exists on how these variables function uniquely in marriages involving African American and African Caribbean individuals. This quantitative study examined the relationship between conflict style and marital satisfaction with and between African Caribbean and African American couples living in the United States. The research focused on three questions: (1) Will cultural differences between spouses influence the relationship between conflict styles and marital satisfaction? (2) Will there be any observable differences in conflict styles between African American, African Caribbean, and culturally mixed couples? (3) Will rates of spousal conflict differ between African American couples, culturally mixed couples, and African Caribbean couples? It was hypothesized that (1) Cultural differences within the marriage will moderate the relationship between conflict style and marital satisfaction; (2) African Americans would use more assertive conflict styles and African Caribbeans would use more cooperative conflict styles and; (3) Given the differences in cultural and relationship expectations, rates of conflict will be lower among African Caribbean couples. Multiple regression analysis was used investigate the first research question and hypothesis. A one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the second research question and hypothesis, and an independent samples t-test analyzed the third research question and hypothesis. Findings from this study suggested that African Caribbean, African American, and culturally mixed couples share more similarities in terms of conflict style and marital satisfaction than differences.

Book excerpt: Compared to their White counterparts, African Americans have higher never-married and divorce rates, greater complaints of negative partner behavior, and lower relationship quality (e.g. Philips & Sweeney, 2005), and this instability is not solely attributable to structural factors such as socioeconomic status (Bulanda & Brown, 2007). The current study examined internalized racism and television media, sociocultural factors theorized to play a unique role in relationship quality for Black couples. It was hypothesized that internalized racism would predict lower relationship quality. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that greater television viewing would predict lower relationship quality, and proportions of Black-oriented and mainstream programming viewed by participants were examined to explore the impact, if any, of race. The sample was comprised of 112 African Americans in a romantic relationship (n = 22 couples or 44 participants of the total 112 sample), and the data were examined for dependency of participant scores. No significant differences between coupled and non-coupled participants were found, allowing for the use of the full sample. Consistent with previous research and expectations, hierarchical linear regressions revealed that internalized racism was a significant predictor of poorer relationship quality. However, contrary to predictions and emerging research, no television viewing variables significantly predicted relationship quality. Implications of the aforementioned findings, study limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: The goal of this applied research project was to assess the marital satisfaction of a volunteer group of mostly African American couples at North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship, compare the results of these assessments with results of a national phone survey and other empirical studies, and based upon the findings, determine the ministry implications for the church. This project began with and draws much of its foundation from a survey of biblical and professional literature related to marriage and divorce. The cornerstone of this research effort was a survey instrument designed by Scott M. Stanley and Howard Markman entitled Marriage in the 90s: A Nationwide Random Phone Survey. The survey was completed by over 100 African American marriage participants who are members of North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship. The results of the church survey were compared to the actual survey done by Stanley and Markman. The conclusion of this project underscores the fact that marriage was ordained by God and rests solidly upon a theological foundation. It also affirms that the conflict that is prevalent in marriage has its source in the spiritual realm, and consequently the solution must be found in the spiritual realm. This was found to be true for white couples and African American couples, even though African American famiies are best with a number of marital variable that are unique to the Africian American context.
