Book excerpt: Research has empirically demonstrated that intimacy is a crucial element when it comes to marriage and its success. And when we talk about the success of a marriage, we talk about marital satisfaction. However, few studies have examined how these two independent constructs are related to one another in terms of which type of intimacy predicts the highest level of marital satisfaction in Lebanese couples. The present study investigated the relationship between intimacy and marital satisfaction. Specifically, we examined whether emotional and sexual intimacy are the highest predictors of marital satisfaction compared to social, recreational, and intellectual intimacy, and how the length of marriage moderates this relationship between IV and DV. Participants were Lebanese married individuals who completed a demographic information sheet, the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships, and the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale. Data was analyzed through the use of multiple regression a ...

Book excerpt: Through the research on which this book reports, we have been given the unique opportunity to explore the complex nature of two of the most important issues in the lives of adults: identity and intimacy. It is with deep gratitude that we give credit to the 80 individuals in our sample who allowed us to explore these processes in their lives. Our purpose in writing this book was, in some ways, a modest one. Both of us believed that research on the Eriksonian concept of intimacy was deficient in that it was limited to the reports of individuals about them selves. We maintained that this kind of research could provide only a narrow, and probably biased, view of the intimacy development of individ uals. By obtaining complementary responses to the intimacy interview from both partners in a marital relationship, we hope to pave a new path that fu ture researchers in this area will follow. Beyond this methodological advance, we intended that this book's theoretical focus could put a new perspective on the well-trodden path of research on marriage. This more ambitious gaal is one that we faced with some trepidation. The literature on marital adjustment and satisfaction is vast and potentially overwhelming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex Differences and Similarities in Communication offers a thorough exploration of sex differences in how men and women communicate, set within the context of sex similarities, offering a balanced examination of the topic. The contents of this distinctive volume frame the conversation regarding the extent to which sex differences are found in social behavior, and emphasize different theoretical perspectives on the topic. Chapter contributors examine how sex differences and similarities can be seen in various verbal and nonverbal communicative behaviors across contexts, and focus on communication behavior in romantic relationships. The work included here represents recent research on the topic across various disciplines, including communication, social psychology, sociology, linguistics, and organizational behavior, by scholars well-known for their work in this area. In this second edition, some chapters present new perspectives on sex/gender and communication; others present substantially revised versions of earlier chapters. All chapters have a stronger theoretical orientation and are based on a wider range of empirical data than those in the first edition. Readers in communication, social psychology, relationships, and related fields will find much of interest in this second edition. The volume will serve as a text for students in advanced coursework as well as a reference for practitioners interested in research-based conclusions regarding sex differences in communicative behavior.

It brings together the work of international scholars and is divided into four sections: communication as a means by which couples manage everyday life; communication as a means of expression of emotion; communication and problem-solving; coping with relationships outside marriage. The text is interdisciplinary and looks at the issue from various angles: social psychology, clinical psychology and communications. Particular attention is paid to the emergence of sex differences in interaction patterns and the experience of counselling plays an important part.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study investigated the relationship between intimacy and marital satisfaction, as well as between intimacy and sexuality. Participants were 30 couples, with a mean age of 49. Participants had been involved in a romantic relationship for an average of 20 years. Couples were asked to complete a variety of questionnaires on intimacy, marital, and sexual functioning. Results indicated no sex differences in levels of overall intimacy, or in levels of sexual satisfaction, however the men were experiencing more sexual problems than the women. For men, sexual and emotional intimacy predicted marital satisfaction, whereas for women, recreational and emotional intimacy were the significant predictors. High discrepancies between perceived and desired levels of intimacy were not related to lower marital satisfaction. Few dimensions of intimacy were related to sexual satisfaction and functioning. The finding that different types of intimacy are important to marital satisfaction for men and women has implications for the areas of focus in marital therapy. The finding that large discrepancies between perceived and desired intimacy levels did not decrease marital satisfaction suggests that individuals find ways to compensate for a lack of intimacy in their relationship. Other implications of the present findings, as well as how they relate to past research and theory, are discussed.
