Book excerpt: The skid resistance of asphalt pavement is a major characteristic that determines the driving safety on a road, especially under wet surface conditions. Skid resistance is primarily a function of the microtexture and macrotexture of a pavement surface. Microtexture is influenced by aggregate surface characteristics and is required to disrupt the continuity of surface water film and attain frictional resistance between the tire and the pavement surface. Macrotexture is affected mostly by mixture design or aggregate gradation and contributes to skid resistance by providing drainage paths of water that can be otherwise trapped between a tire and a pavement surface. The increase in macrotexture contributes to preventing hydroplaning and improving wet frictional resistance, particularly at high speeds. While much research has been conducted in the past to identify material factors that affect skid resistance, there is still a need to develop a model for predicting asphalt pavement skid resistance as a function of mixture characteristics and traffic level. The purpose of this study was to develop such a model based on extensive laboratory experiments and field measurements involving different mixture types and aggregate sources. The model incorporates functions that describe the resistance of aggregates to polishing and aggregate size distribution. The aggregate resistance to polishing was quantified by measuring aggregate texture using the Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS) before and after polishing in the Micro-Deval device. The analysis in this dissertation demonstrates how this model can be used to design mixtures and classify aggregates that provide desirable skid resistance levels.

Book excerpt: This report documents the findings from the research that was carried out as part of Phase II of TxDOT Project 0-5627. The research included measurements and analysis of mechanical and physical properties of aggregates used in surface mixes in the state of Texas. These properties were aggregate shape characteristics measured using the Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS), British Pendulum value, coarse aggregate acid insolubility, Los Angeles weight loss, Micro-Deval weight loss, and Magnesium sulfate weight loss. In addition, a database of field skid number measurements that were collected over a number of years using the skid trailer was developed. The Dynamic Friction Tester (DFT) and Circular Texture Meter (CTMeter) were used to measure friction and texture, respectively, of selected asphalt pavement sections. These data and measurements were used to carry out comprehensive statistical analyses of the influence of aggregate properties and mixture design on skid resistance value and its variability. Consequently, a method and software were developed for predicting asphalt pavement skid resistance. This method requires inputs that describe aggregate resistance to polishing, mixture gradation, and traffic. The developed software can be used to select the mixture type and aggregate source that are needed to achieve the required level of skid resistance for a given service life.

Book excerpt: Pavement skid resistance is primarily a function of the surface texture, which includes both microtexture and macrotexture. Earlier, under the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Research Project 0-5627, the researchers developed a method to predict asphalt pavement skid resistance based on inputs including aggregate texture before and after polishing, gradation of asphalt mixture, and traffic levels. In this study, the researchers validated and revised the skid prediction model for asphalt pavements and developed oped a skid prediction model for seal coat surfaces. The researchers investigated and examined the surface friction characteristics of 70 test sections of asphalt mixtures and surface-treated roads in Texas. The test sections covered a wide range of mixtures and aggregate types. The researchers measured pavement macrotexture and microtexture of these sections and revised the traffic calculation. Historical skid numbers were obtained from TxDOT's Pavement Management Information System database and measured using a skid trailer. Aggregate texture and angularity was quantified using the aggregate image measurement system. Statistical methods were used to develop a prediction model for skid numbers, and the predicted values were compared to the measured ones in the field. The revised model describes the skid resistance of asphalt pavements as a function of aggregate characteristics, mixture gradation, and traffic level. The researchers incorporated aggregate angularity as an additional parameter in the model. Similarly, the researchers developed a skid prediction model for seal coat surfaces using the same parameters. A Microsoft Access--based Visual Basic desktop application was developed to automatically calculate the predicted skid numbers by incorporating the skid prediction mode ls. Using this standalone application, one can input the basic aggregate characteristics and traffic data to predict the pavement's skid resistance during its service life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pavement skid resistance is one of the primary factors in highway safety. Pavements with adequate skid resistance reduce the number of crashes in wet conditions. The friction between pavement surface and vehicle tires is related to the macrotexture and microtexture of pavement surface. The macrotexture of asphalt pavement is dependent on aggregate gradation, while the microtexture is dependent on aggregate shape characteristics. Aggregates with angular shape and rough texture provide higher level of skid resistance compared to aggregates with smooth surface. In addition, pavement surfaces with high macrotexture provide higher skid resistance compared to those with low macrotexture. There were two main objectives of this study. The first object was to investigate and examine the surface and friction characteristics of various test sections of asphalt mixtures as well as seal coat surfaces. The test sections included different asphalt mixture types (e.g., dense graded, stone matrix asphalt, porous friction course), seal coat grades (Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3), aggregate types (e.g., limestone, gravel, granite, sandstone), and the test sections were located in regions with different environmental conditions. The second objective was to develop a predictive model for skid resistance of seal coat surfaces and validate and revise an existing skid prediction model for asphalt pavements. Field testing primarily included measurements of coefficient of friction using a dynamic friction tester, pavement surface texture using a circular texture meter, and skid number using a skid trailer. The measurements were conducted on the outer lane where pavement surfaces experience significant polishing rates because most of the trucks use that lane. The resistance of aggregate to polishing and abrasion was studied using laboratory test methods. Several analytical models were developed to predict the friction and skid resistance of asphalt pavements and seal coat surfaces over their service life. These models incorporate parameters that describe aggregate resistance to abrasion and polishing, aggregate shape characteristics, aggregate gradation, and traffic level. These models were developed based on comprehensive field testing and aggregate laboratory characterization. Good correlations were found between the developed models and experimental data. The results demonstrated that aggregate and surface characteristics as well as traffic level have significant effect on skid resistance and rate of skid reduction. These models can be used during the mix design procedure to optimize the aggregate selection and aggregate gradation to produce mixtures with proper friction. In addition, these models can be incorporated in a Project Management System (PMS) at the network level to plan and program preventive maintenance activities to ensure that pavements have adequate skid resistance.

In addition, the study evaluated the effect of compaction level and compaction method on skid resistance and the internal structure of asphalt mixtures. The predictive model for friction loss was developed based on parameters that describe aggregate texture and angularity before and after polishing, aggregate gradation, and polishing cycles in the laboratory. Squared-shape slabs of asphalt mixtures were prepared in the laboratory using a linear kneading compactor and polished using a wheel-polishing device. The frictional characteristics were measured after different intervals of polishing cycles. Mixtures with coarser aggregate gradation were found to have better skid resistance than those with fine aggregate gradation. The friction loss model was found to correlate very well with the experimental measurements. The predictive model for laboratory compaction of asphalt mixtures was developed based on parameters that describe aggregate shape characteristics, aggregate gradation, binder content, and binder properties at compaction temperatures. The researchers executed intensive laboratory experiments to quantify the effect of these parameters on the compaction of asphalt mixture in the laboratory. Two models that describe slope and intercept of the laboratory compaction curves of asphalt mixtures were developed. These models showed strong correlations between the predicted values and the measured ones. These models provide essential inputs to quantify the compaction effort needed to compact asphalt mixtures. In the last phase of this study, the researchers evaluated the effect of compaction level and compaction method on skid resistance and internal structure of asphalt pavements. The vibratory roller was found to yield a smoother surface than the static roller. In addition, the results confirmed that the vibratory roller was more effective in reducing the air voids than the static roller. Moreover, the test sections compacted using the vibratory roller had more uniform air void distribution compared to the test sections compacted using the static roller.

This paper presents a detailed analysis of aggregate texture and its relationship to pavement skid resistance. A new method is developed for the evaluation of aggregate resistance to polishing. This method relies on the Micro-Deval test as the mechanism for polishing aggregates and the Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS) for quantifying the change in texture due to polishing. The results show that the Micro-Deval test is an effective method for polishing aggregates within a short time. Also, the AIMS texture analysis is able to rapidly and accurately quantify the influence of polishing on texture. The verification of the new method was achieved through measuring the skid resistance of pavements constructed using three different aggregate sources and three different aggregate gradations. The skid resistance was found to be related not only to average aggregate texture, but also to the texture distribution within an aggregate sample. The developed method can be used in models for predicting the change in asphalt pavement skid resistance as a function of aggregate texture, mixture properties, and environmental conditions.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis consists of two parts. The first part includes analyses of the correlation between the results of two Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS) units. These analyses have led to refinements of the AIMS analysis methods of angularity and texture, which resulted in reduced variability in the results and better correlation between the two AIMS units. The refined analysis methods were used to establish a database of the shape characteristics of about 100 aggregate samples from the state of Texas and to propose a new method for the classification of aggregates based on their shape characteristics. This new method of classification is for use in the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) wet weather accident reduction program (WWARP). The use of AIMS texture index and variability in texture within an aggregate source is proposed instead of the British Polish Value (BPV) for classifying aggregates used in pavement surfaces. The second part of the thesis investigates the relationship between shape characteristics and asphalt pavement skid resistance. Many states have implemented wet weather accident reduction programs aimed at maintaining acceptable levels of pavement skid resistance. Proper aggregate selection before construction aids in maintaining acceptable levels of skid resistance throughout the life of the pavement. Several predictive models of pavement skid resistance have been developed over the years. Some of these models account for the influence of aggregate characteristics on pavement skid resistance, primarily through incorporating the results of the BPV test in the model. However, the BPV test is known to have high variability and dependence on experimental factors that are not related to the actual aggregate resistance to polishing. AIMS offers a method to measure aggregate shape characteristics directly in a relatively short period of time. The new method for relating aggregate shape characteristics to pavement skid resistance was verified by relating skid resistance measurements from field test sections to measured aggregate properties from the laboratory. This methodology is expected to be the basis for further study to form a more comprehensive and verified model for the prediction of pavement skid resistance that incorporates measured aggregate properties from the AIMS system.

Book excerpt: The current test methods for measuring fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures involves many steps which are time-consuming and costly. On the other hand, asphalt binder and mastic testing are less time consuming and more accessible to practitioners than mixtures testing. Therefore, if the routinely measured properties of asphalt binders, fillers, and volumetric parameters of asphalt mixtures can be used to predict cracking resistance of mixtures, the effort to perform mixtures testing of asphalt mixtures can be minimized. The objective of this study is to develop prediction models for cracking and damage behavior of asphalt mixtures using the stepwise regression method at intermediate temperatures from limited laboratory testing of binders and mixture volumetric properties routinely done in practice. In the first phase of this study, the effects of physical and chemical properties of fillers on fatigue of asphalt mastic are measured using LAS test are measured. Then prediction models of Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) parameters of the mastics are developed using the physical (Rigden Voids-RV and Fineness Modulus-FM), chemical properties (Calcium Oxide and Methylene Blue) of the fillers, and the LAS parameters of the binders. The results show that the fatigue cracking resistance of mastic is dependent on the interaction between base asphalt binder and filler type. The results also show that the effect of fillers on the fatigue life of mastic is dependent on the failure criterion used in the analysis of LAS test. It is also found that the fatigue cracking resistance (LAS Parameters) of mastic can be predicted reliably from Rigden Voids and LAS parameters of binders. In the second phase of the study, prediction models of cracking resistance of mixtures as measured by the Semi-Circular Bending- Illinois Flexibility Index Test (SCB-IFIT) are developed using an experimental database including 44 mixtures that are short-term-aged and 30 for long-term-aged mixtures. These mixtures are produced with varying combinations of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP), binder, aggregate sources, and fillers. More specifically, models for the SCB parameters (Flexibility Index (FI), post-peak slope, and Fracture Energy (Gf) models are constructed using various independent variables such as asphalt content, asphalt film thickness, aggregate gradation, RAP content, LAS parameter of binder and mastic properties. A sensitivity analysis is performed to access the impact of these independent variables on SCB parameters. Based on the correlation and validation results, the developed models of SCB parameters are found to predict the FI, post-peak slope and Gf of asphalt mixtures with high accuracy. The developed models are recommended to use for estimating the fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures when testing is not feasible or as an initial step for selection of mixture designs and binder grades before mixture testing.

Book excerpt: The underlying purpose of any pavement is to provide a safe, smooth and reliable surface for the intended users. In the case of hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements, this includes producing a surface that is resistant to the principal HMA distress types: permanent deformation (or rutting) and fatigue damage (or cracking). To protect better against these distress types, there have recently been changes in HMA mixture design practice. These changes have had the positive effect of producing more damage resistant mixtures but have also had the effect of producing mixtures that require more compaction effort to obtain required densities. It is important to understand what properties of an HMA mixture contribute to their compactability. This study presents analysis of the correlation between HMA mixture properties and laboratory compaction parameters for the purpose of predicting compactability. Mixture property data were measured for a variety of mixtures; these mixtures were compacted in the laboratory and compaction parameters were collected. A statistical analysis was implemented to correlate the mixture data to the compaction data for the purpose of predicting compactability. The resulting model performs well at predicting compactability for mixtures that are similar to the ones used to make the model, and it reveals some mixture properties that influence compaction. The analysis showed that the binder content in an HMA mixture and the slope of the aggregate gradation curve are important in determining the compactability of a mixture.
