Book excerpt: As California's financial commitment to higher education continues to waver amidst fiscal crises and competing policy priorities, it is important that public institutions explore other strategies to cope with budget shortfalls (Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), 2012). Such strategies have generally consisted of tuition and fee increases, expenditure reductions, and enrollment management (PPIC, 2012). There are numerous consequences related to each. Tuition and fee increases heighten worries about affordability. Expenditure reductions raise concerns about quality. Enrollment maiJagement practices threaten to limit access. One less explored strategy in the California State University (CSU) system is the solicitation of philanthropic support. Unlike private colleges and universities who have relied on philanthropic support for generations, most CSU schools lack a culture and tradition of giving back. Indeed, it has only been since the state legislature began cutting back support in the 1990s and 201 Os that CSU schools started becoming interested in philanthropy and expressing the need for more money than the state provides. Given this, many higher education administrators view philanthropic support as a promising way for public institutions to continue funding university initiatives no longer supported by the state. Focusing specifically on the CSU system, this study used a mixed-methods approach of both quantitative and comparative research to further examine philanthropic support through the lens of alumni giving. For the quantitative research, I utilized data from a CSU Advancement Office to conduct a two-part regression analysis and examine alumni giving patterns over a five-year period. The quantitative research also included a forecast prediction model. For the comparative research, the study compared its predictions on donor likelihood and target gift amount to that of a third party analytics company which conducted similar research with the same dataset. Corroborating past literature, the study overwhelmingly found that the type of degree earned and the number of degrees earned impacted alumni giving. Master, doctoral, and second-degree earners were significantly more likely to be donors. Similarly, student athletes and students who participated in at least one university-sponsored activity were more likely to be donors. In terms of total amount given, the results again substantiated that higher educational attainment and student involvement corresponded with larger gifts. The variables of age, median household income, and proximity to campus also had an effect on total amount given. When comparing the study's predictions to a third party company's predictions, the analysis revealed that the study's model may lack a robust indicator for high-end donors. Yet for low-end donors, the study may provide a more nuanced prediction that could prove to be helpful for annual funds. Based on these findings, there is evidence to suggest that regression analysis can assist CSU University Advancement Offices to understand the factors that predict alumni giving. Learning more about the influences that cause an alumnus/na to make a financial contribution in support of the CSU can help inform policy decisions about state general fund allocation. The study can also help CSU Advancement Offices engage in more fruitful, meaningful, and strategic fundraising.

Book excerpt: Two binary logistic regression analyses were conducted across survey data from 254 master's-level graduates to answer research questions about predicting Willingness to Give to their graduate alma mater and predicting Actual Alumni Giving behavior to their graduate alma mater. The predictor variables are dimensions from the community of inquiry theoretical framework (Social, Teaching, and Cognitive Presences), Gender, Graduation Age, Location of classes (onsite or online), State (in state or out of state), and Past Giving to Higher Education. The results of the Willingness to Give analysis indicate that the variables used in the regression equation are not statistically significant on their own, even while the overall model demonstrates significance. For the second analysis regarding predicting Actual Alumni Giving, State, Graduation Age, and Past Giving to Higher Education are statistically significant predictive variables. The results suggest that a one-point increase in the Cognitive mean increases the odds of donation by nearly 17%. The probability of Actual Alumni Giving decreases by nearly 48% if the master's-level graduate is a former online student. Past charitable giving behavior to higher education increases the probability of actual giving by 93%. .

As such, university development departments are challenged with identifying potential donors and with adopting more efficient practices so as to ensure successful fund-raising campaigns. This study used de-identified alumni donation information from three, private, Ohio-based universities over a 10-year period, 1995-2005. Using Astin's Theory of Student of Involvement (1984) as its framework, the researcher sought to determine what influence, if any, alumni demographic information, undergraduate fields of study, and undergraduate experiences in on-campus academic, social, and athletic pursuits have on alumni donations. A significant finding from this study is the fact that having alumni involved in more than one on-campus academic, social, or athletic pursuit was the most significant predictor of alumnus total donations, the study's criterion variable. This study is believed to be the first to have applied Astin's student involvement theory to alumni donation patterns. Future researchers may identify even more opportunities to target philanthropic opportunities among alumni so as to ensure more efficient, effective higher education donor campaigns..

First, opportunity I---being asked to give and alumni involvement are strong predictors of both donating and the amount donated at both universities. Additionally, opportunity II---having the financial resources to give was statistically significant in predicting the amount donated for both universities, but was only found to be a significant predictor of whether respondents donated at UD. Finally a comparison of the analyses for both institutions showed that no meaningful differences existed between donor behaviors at the two universities. The findings from this study provide a theoretically based model that can be used to further explore donor motives in higher education. Additionally, the results give practitioners a basis of determining how to increase alumni donations.

The most significant predictor of future giving for alumni to their alma mater is past giving (Okunade and Justice, 1991). This creates an unfortunate situation for today's post-secondary leader, where they need to be more reliant on fundraising results to overcome budget shortfalls while knowing their fundraising staffs only have the ability to determine the likelihood of an alumni to give through meeting with them. This problem is only more exacerbated for public post-secondary leader, who has dealt with dwindling state support for years (Mitchell et al., 2018). The goal of this analysis was to see if we could identify alumni more likely to donate based on involvement in certain student activity types. From there, those involved in fundraising and leading post-secondary institutions could then have segmented group of alumni more likely to donate that they can focus solicitations on. In this analysis multiple logistic regressions are conducted to show the impact of participating in at least one of eight student activity types on making at least one gift six to nine years removed from graduation. The findings show that involvement in any of the eight student activity types measured will increase the likelihood of alumni giving, with those participating in varsity sport, greek, or campus leadership activities being over 2 times more likely to give.

Divisions of university advancement frequently depend on tracking past gifts to predict future gifts and not consistently consider whether alumni engagement is a predictor of future giving (Kelly, 1998). Alumni engagement is defined as, "Activities that are valued by alumni, build enduring and mutually beneficial relationships, inspire loyalty and financial support, strengthen the institution's reputation and involve alumni in meaningful activities to advance the institution's mission" (CASE, 2018, p. 5). The purpose of this study was to evaluate how engagement as a student and as an alumnus relates to alumni charitable giving. The study considered engagement factors that specifically related to the undergraduate student experience as well as factors related to alumni. This study considered which factors may be predictive of charitable giving as an alumnus. This study also considered whether the stage of relationship between the alumnus and the university, when a charitable gift was made, predicted lifetime charitable giving amount. The study examined engagement as it pertains to giving using forward logistic regression analysis and forward multiple regression to examine variables and their relationships. The population of this study was alumni of a small private religiously-affiliated university in the Midwest and utilized a secondary data set. Results of the forward logistic regression produced a three-factor model, indicating that receiving a university scholarship more than doubled the odds of an alumnus making a gift to their alma mater. The result of the forward multiple regression did not indicate that participation in a team sport or membership in a registered student organization increased the odds of charitable giving to one's alma mater. This study applies a variety of machine learning algorithms to higher education alumni giving and compares the performance of each method in terms of classification accuracy and practicality for use. With increased reliance on private philanthropy, higher education must optimize their development efforts, which begins with the ability to identify likely donors. The models leverage the predictive power of student data to examine the link between student experience and alumni giving and to ensure the model could be applied to future classes using the standard set of collected data. The supervised machine learning methods employed in this study are: Naives Bayes, Decision Trees, Random Forest, Boosting, Bagging, and SMO Support Vector Machines. They represent diverse, widely used methods for classification and provide insight into the broader behavior of alumni giving. The results of the classifiers were largely consistent in terms of classification accuracy and area under ROC curve--suggesting that the modeling had reached the highest accuracy possible for this specific dataset. Still the machine learning implementations perform significantly better than chance and offer a valuable tool in focusing engagement efforts on likely donors. This study contributes to the related literature by offering a practical application of several types of machine learning in a growing field where data is available and rich. It supports the importance of collecting data about potential alumni donors while they are students and encourages the further integration of machine learning into prospecting techniques.

Book excerpt: "This paper uses a unique data set to assess whether donors' contributions to a nonprofit institution are affected by the perception that the institution might confer a reciprocal benefit. We study alumni contributions to an anonymous research university. Inter alia, the data include information on the ages of the alumni's children, whether they applied for admission to the university, and if so, whether they were accepted. The premise of our analysis is simple: If alumni believe that donations will increase the likelihood of admission for their children and if this belief helps motivate their giving, then the pattern of giving should vary systematically with the ages of their children, whether the children ultimately apply to university, and the outcome of the admissions process. We refer to this pattern as the child-cycle of alumni giving. If the child-cycle is operative, one would observe that, ceteris paribus, the presence of children increases the propensity to give, that giving drops off after the admissions decision is made, and that the decline is greater when the child is rejected by the university. Further, under the joint hypothesis that alumni can reasonably predict the likelihood that their children will someday apply to the university and that reciprocity in the form of a higher probability of admission is expected, we expect that alumni with children in their early teens who eventually apply will give more than alumni whose teenagers do not. The evidence is strongly consistent with the child-cycle pattern. Thus, while altruism drives some giving, the hope for a reciprocal benefit plays a role as well.
