Book excerpt: The results suggest that leader trustworthiness is central to this relationship. Leaders with a broad behavioral repertoire were perceived as more trustworthy but differentiated leader behavior was found to build trust when it was perceived as adaptive but erode trust when it was perceived as inconsistent. Leader authenticity was not found to mitigate the negative effect of flexible leader behavior as hypothesized. These results and the implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: Become a more flexible leader in today’s unpredictable world with a revolutionary approach to applying leadership skills—while remaining steadfast in proven principles and your values. Despite the billions of dollars invested every year into leadership development, leaders aren’t collectively becoming more successful. Existing tools like assessments, models, and styles have proven largely inadequate in equipping leaders for today’s age of work. For leaders to succeed in a landscape more unpredictable than ever, they need a new perspective and a brand-new set of skills that center around what is missing in the models and existing tools: flexibility. Kevin Eikenberry, Chief Potential Officer of the Kevin Eikenberry Group, a leadership consulting company centered on a philosophy of lifelong learning, explains the need for and how to effectively harness this essential flexibility in this guide for leaders at all levels. A roadmap outlining a new toolkit for leaders frustrated with their current effectiveness and confidence, Flexible Leadership teaches readers to: Distinguish between what has and hasn’t changed in the world of work—enabling them to lead with greater success and leverage flexibility more effectively Efficiently use, but not rely on, existing and familiar leadership models Apply a framework to be more situationally flexible and effective every day without compromising their values The flexible leader has a clear mindset and increased confidence knowing that they can respond to their everyday situations with greater success, instead of being overly reliant on restrictive and complicated tools that can get in the way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspirational and practical guide to leadership from the New York Times–bestselling author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey, named one of Time magazine’s 25 Most Influential Americans, is a renowned authority on leadership, whose insightful advice has helped millions. In his follow-up to The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, he poses these fundamental questions: How do we as individuals and organizations survive and thrive amid tremendous change? Why are efforts to improve falling so short in real results? How do we unleash the creativity, talent, and energy within ourselves and others? Is it realistic to believe that balance among personal and professional life is possible? The key to dealing with the challenges that we face is to identify a principle-centered core within ourselves and our institutions. In Principle-Centered Leadership, Covey outlines a long-term, inside-out approach to developing people and organizations. Offering insights and guidelines on how to apply these principles both at work and at home, Covey posits that these steps will lead not only to an increase in productivity and quality of work, but also to a new appreciation of personal and professional relationships as we strive to enjoy a more balanced, rewarding, and ultimately more effective life. “There seems to be no limit to the number of writers offering answers to the great perplexities of life. Covey, however, is the North Star in this field . . . without hesitation, strongly recommended.” —Library Journal

Book excerpt: Cities across the country rely on nonprofit organizations to provide quality services and effective campaigns that will benefit individuals, families, and communities. Reliable men and women are placed in leadership roles within these organizations, but are they prepared to lead? Dr. Troy Washington worked with and studied the leadership of Peacemaker Social Services under Gary Bellamy II, which provided him with insight into this unique line of work. With this in mind, Dr. Washington wrote Beyond the Boardroom: Examining the Concepts of an Effective Leader in a Culturally Conscious, Community-based Nonprofit Organization as a guide for anyone seeking leadership advice related to nonprofit organizations. From directors to team members, everyone makes up an important part of the overall organization. While there may not be a single definition of a leader, there are qualities that stand out among those with true leadership skills. Dr. Washington’s hope is that by inspiring leaders, they will use their roles to change the lives of those around them, for the better.

What we believe to be true given our particular experience often seems to be the only truth. Often we need some outside force to trigger reevaluation and rethinking. That triggering force to intellectual growth may be a new idea, a new situation, a new value, a new boss, or some other significant emotional event – maybe, even, a new book. The Resear ch F oundation This book is founded on two pillars: one, a model of five leadership mind-sets c- mon in the last 100 years first presented in Gilbert W. Fairholm ’s (1998a, 1998b) book, Perspectives on Leadership: From the Science of Management to its Spiritual Heart ; and two, Matthew R. Fairholm’s (2002) dissertation, Conceiving Leadership: Exploring Five Perspectives of Leadership by Investigating the Conceptions and Experiences of Selected Metropolitan Washington Area Municipal Managers , which analyzed and validated the perspectives model (see the Appendix for more details). The data collected confirm there are five distinct perspectives of leadership evident in the 100-year history of leadership study and practice. The resulting model defines the five perspectives in terms of descriptions of leadership in action, leadership tools and behaviors, and the way leaders approach their relationship to followers. The five perspectives are related hierarchically so that they progressively encompass a unique perspective of the leadership phenomenon.

Book excerpt: You are working hard. You are sustaining your job. You are doing well in your field. Life seems fine. But there is something that’s holding you back from making it to the top in your field of work. That something could be an annoying habit, a behaviour, or a trait that’s getting you stuck in your career. All of us want promotions and salary increases. We desire to make it to the top. But most of us don't realize that these things cannot be asked for by putting our hands out. You can get that promotion, the salary raise, the new project, the visibility, the sponsors, the accolades, and the achievements only when you work on yourself harder than you work on your job. You must become such that success, promotion, and job offers begin to follow you everywhere. In this book, Payal Nanjiani points out that the reason why many do not make it to the top is not because of a lack of information, abilities or skills. Having private access to some of the world's most successful industry leaders, she tells you that those who truly make it to the top in their careers are doing things differently than others. An expert coach, who helps leaders globally overcome their unconscious habits and behaviours to attain higher levels of success, she has worked with corporates and leaders around the globe bringing about a huge transformation in the thinking and behaviours of leaders. Her one-on-one coaching comes with a six-figure price tag. But in this book, Payal shares some great advice and strategic solutions to reach the top without a hefty price tag. The book has hands-on advice on what to do, how to do it, and what transformation to bring about in your thinking and habits. These ideas, powers, and habits have been tested in practice on numerous executives Payal has coached in the past eighteen years and are helpful to people in every part of the organization. We all face challenges and deal with setbacks. But in the long run, you'll achieve incredible growth and success if you're willing to change your thinking and behaviours. Are you ready to unlock your leadership powers and live your best life?

There are many challenges that still remain when it comes to establishing responsible leadership both in theory and practice. Whilst offering conceptualisations for the improvement of leadership is a first and perhaps easier response, what is more difficult is to facilitate the actual change to happen. These chapters will not only generate interest in the emerging domain of studies on responsible leadership, but also will pave the way for future research in this area in the years to come. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definition of leadership that would be widely accepted by the majority of theorists and researchers might say that "leadership is a process of social influence in which one person is able to enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task." The major points of this definition are that leadership is a group activity, is based on social influence, and revolves around a common task. While this specification seems relatively simple, the reality of leadership is very complex. Intrapersonal factors (thoughts and emotions) interact with interpersonal processes (attraction, communication, and influence) to have effects on a dynamic external environment. Each of these aspects brings complexity to the leadership process. It is the purpose of this book to make that complexity a bit more manageable, increasing the ability to understand what effective leadership is. This volume offers a comprehensive analysis and integration of the empirical research literature and major theories of leadership. It employs a functional analysis stressing what leaders must do to be effective and specifies the processes related to each function. The chapters provide an extensive review of the major approaches to leadership. Each chapter is discussed with an eye to explaining the basic principles, the research evidence, and where appropriate, the relationship of the theory or research program to other theories. In addition, this volume offers the most comprehensive treatment of cultural and gender factors in leadership of any recent book. The question of male-female differences in leadership style and performance is carefully analyzed against the empirical findings. The ultimate goal of this review of the literature is to provide a basis for the presentation of an integrative model of leadership that brings together function and process and provides an armature for integrating what is known.
