Book excerpt: The effectiveness of precommercial crop tree thinning was investigated by thinning crop trees of paper birch, yellow birch, and sugar maple to two intensity levels at 8 years of age. Analysis of covariance on post thinning growth measurements taken 7 years later indicated a significant increase in diameter and crown-diameter growth, with the pattern of response varying by species. The study suggests that a uniform crop-tree thinning treatment for a stand composed of species with varying tolerances will rarely produce the best response for all the species.

Book excerpt: In 1959 a study of crop-tree release and species cleaning was established in a 25-year-old northern hardwood stand growing on an above-average hardwood site that resulted from a silvicultural clearcut in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Three treatmentslight crop-tree release, heavy release, and species cleaningwere randomly assigned to quarter-acre plots, five plots per treatment, including five untreated plots. The stand was followed for 5 years and based on the results, treatment effects were projected to a stand age of 45 years. These projections were subjected to a financial analysis. The treatment plots were tallied at stand ages 56 (1990) and 69 (2003) years. We summarize the results of the early crop-tree release and species cleaning and provide a long-term financial perspective based on the new tallies. Our goal was to repeat the financial analysis and re-examine the results and conclusions of the original study. We found that the return on investment at stand ages 56 and 69 years was not as good as originally reported. The least expensive treatment, a light crop-tree release, gave the greatest return on investment. An opportunity for a commercial thinning between stand age 45 and 56 was missed and most likely would have improved the financial outcome of the treatments. Approximately 400 crop trees per acre were selected for release in 1959 but 200 crop trees per acre would have been more than sufficient and would have improved the financial outcome of the treatments by lowering initial cost. On a similarly good hardwood site, with an equally well stocked young stand, and good markets for small diameter roundwood, we only can speculate that releasing 200 or preferably fewer dominant or codominant trees per acre at stand age 25 followed by a commercial thinning when feasible after stand age 45 could be a good investment for a landowner.

Book excerpt: "The even-aged hardwood forest, with a poorly balanced distribution of age-classes, can cause perplexing problems during the first rotation. What is the best cutting strategy to follow? By using linear programming, we developed some cutting strategies that maximize board-foot production and produce a balanced age distribution by the end of the first rotation. We developed the strategies for four hypothetical northern hardwood forests with different unbalanced age distributions. Although these strategies may be used for forest lands with conditions similar to those assumed in this study, we urge that the linear programming techniques described in this paper be used to develop strategies tailored to particular forests and to particular management objectives. Book excerpt: S2The yield of even-aged hardwoods can be increased by a A program of regular thinnings. The questions are: How much increase can be expected? And what are the effects on quality? The 5-year results from a long-term study of thinning in young northern hardwoods on the Bartlett Experimental Forest in New Hampshire show that heavy thinning increased crop-tree basal-area growth by 53 percent and crop-tree diameter growth by 64 percent. There were no adverse effects on tree quality, and overall stand quality has been improved.S3.

Book excerpt: This textbook offers a detailed overview of the current state of knowledge concerning the ecology and management of compositionally and structurally diverse forests. It provides answers to central questions such as: What are the scientific concepts used to assess the growth, dynamics and functioning of mixed-species forests, how generalizable are they, and what kind of experiments are necessary to develop them further? How do mixed-species stands compare with monocultures in relation to productivity, wood quality, and ecological stability in the face of stress and disturbances? How are the effects of species mixtures on ecosystem functioning influenced by the particular species composition, site conditions, and stand structure? How does any over- or underyielding at the forest-stand level emerge from the tree and organ level, and what are the main mechanisms behind mixing effects? How can our current scientific understanding of mixed-species forests be integrated into silvicultural concepts as well as practical forest management and planning? Do the ecological characteristics of mixed-species stands also translate into economic differences between mixtures and monocultures? In addition, the book addresses experimental designs and analytical approaches to study mixed-species forests and provides extensive empirical information, general concepts, models, and management approaches for mixed-species forests. As such, it offers a valuable resource for students, scientists and educators, as well as professional forest planners, managers, and consultants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable working resource for professionals. An excellent text for advanced forestry students . . . This unique book provides students and professionals with a broad-based knowledge of contemporary silviculture theory and practice.Throughout, the authors emphasize fundamental questions of edaphic, physiographic, and climatic site factors, as well as ecologicalrelationships and silvical characteristics of major tree species.Updated and expanded to reflect the many scientific, socioeconomic, and public policy trends that have had a profound impact onsilviculture over the past decade, this Third Edition of RegionalSilviculture of the United States: * Brings together the knowledge and expertise of fourteen leadingexperts from around the nation * Provides a rational framework with which to critically assessforest data and to develop innovative silvicultural solutions * Features region-by-region coverage of the eleven major foresttypes in the continental U.S. and Alaska * Offers a detailed look at practices that promote a wide range offorest resources--from wood production and outdoor recreation, towildlife habitat and range forage production * Now includes more in-depth coverage of such crucial themes asbiodiversity, endangered species, habitat fragmentation, foresthealth, landscape management, neotropical migrants, and more "...silviculture is not reducible to a series of rules; it must beflexible and adaptable to a variety of conditions. Much of it is anart as well as a synthesis of ecology and economics. There is nosingle best answer to how a stand should be managed. Andinstitutional and societal constraints must be considered." --fromthe Preface by John W. Barrett Regional Silviculture of the United States, Third Edition is not a"cookbook,"offering pat recipes for solving "typical" silviculturalproblems. Instead, it arms those responsible for the developmentand care of forests with something far more valuable--a rationalframework for the analysis of forest data and the development ofinnovative solutions tailored to specific forest types and theshifting politicoeconomic constraints under which silviculturalistsmust work. One way in which this book achieves that goal is by providingreaders with a broad-based knowledge of contemporary silviculturetheory and practice. In chapters organized according to the elevenmajor forest regions of the continental U.S., fourteen recognizedexperts from around the nation--each of them a specialist in aparticular region of operation--offer their valuable insights andobservations on silviculture in general and on varioussilvicultural practices with which they are familiar. Throughout, the authors are attentive to fundamental considerations of edaphic, physiographic, and climatic site factors, as well as ecologicalrelationships and silvical characteristics of major treespecies. This Third Edition of John W. Barrett's classic has been revisedand expanded to encompass a number of important themes which haverisen to prominence within silviculture over the past decade, including biodiversity, endangered species, habitat fragmentation, forest health, landscape management, and neotropicalmigrants. Timely, authoritative, and comprehensive in scope, RegionalSilviculture of the United States, Third Edition is a valuableresource for foresters, forestry students, ecologists, environmental scientists, and all those concerned with development, management, and preservation of our most valuable nationaltreasure.

This study examined Vermonters' participation in 27 leisure activities from three domains (outdoor, resource based, and indoor) to see how such participation differed in each domain. Indoor activities were the most popular, followed by resource-based activities and general outdoor activities. Overall participation declined with age, though this effect was mitigated somewhat for older parents. Other socioeconomic and demographic variables had limited effects on participation.
