Book Synopsis Precision Measurements to Test the Standard Model and for Explosive Nuclear Astrophysics by : Adrian Antonio Valverde
Download or read book Precision Measurements to Test the Standard Model and for Explosive Nuclear Astrophysics written by Adrian Antonio Valverde and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents two significant results in the field of precision measurements in low-energy nuclear physics. Firstly, it presents a precise half-life determination of 11C, leading to the most precise ft-value for a beta decay transition between mirror nuclides, an important advance in the testing of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. Secondly, it describes a high-precision mass measurement of 56Cu, a critical nucleus for determining the path of the astrophysical rapid-proton capture process, performed by the author using the LEBIT Penning trap at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. This new measurement resolves discrepancies in previously-reported calculated mass excesses. In addition, the thesis also presents the construction and testing of a radio-frequency quadrupole cooler and buncher that will be part of the future N = 126 factory at Argonne National Laboratory aimed at producing nuclei of interest for the astrophysical rapid-neutron capture process for the first time.

Download or read book The Construction of TRIGA-TRAP and Direct High-precision Penning Trap Mass Measurements on Rare-earth Elements and Americium written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear masses are an important quantity to study nuclear structure since they reflect the sum of all nucleonic interactions. Many experimental possibilities exist to precisely measure masses, out of which the Penning trap is the tool to reach the highest precision. Moreover, absolute mass measurements can be performed using carbon, the atomic-mass standard, as a reference. The new double-Penning trap mass spectrometer TRIGA-TRAP has been installed and commissioned within this thesis work, which is the very first experimental setup of this kind located at a nuclear reactor. New technical developments have been carried out such as a reliable non-resonant laser ablation ion source for the production of carbon cluster ions and are still continued, like a non-destructive ion detection technique for single-ion measurements. Neutron-rich fission products will be available by the reactor that are important for nuclear astrophysics, especially the r-process. Prior to the on-line coupling to the reactor, TRIGA-TRAP already performed off-line mass measurements on stable and long-lived isotopes and will continue this program. The main focus within this thesis was on certain rare-earth nuclides in the well-established region of deformation around N~90. Another field of interest are mass measurements on actinoids to test mass models and to provide direct links to the mass standard. Within this thesis, the mass of 241-Am could be measured directly for the first time.
Book Synopsis Neutron Stars and NuSTAR by : Varun B. Bhalerao
Download or read book Neutron Stars and NuSTAR written by Varun B. Bhalerao and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book centers around the study of neutron stars, especially those in massive binary systems. To this end, it has two distinct components: the observational study of neutron stars in massive binaries with a goal of measuring neutron star masses and participation in NuSTAR, the first imaging hard X-ray mission, one that is extremely well suited to the study of massive binaries and compact objects in our Galaxy. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) is a NASA Small Explorer mission that will carry the first focusing high energy X-ray telescope to orbit. NuSTAR has an order-of-magnitude better angular resolution and has two orders of magnitude higher sensitivity than any currently orbiting hard X- ray telescope. I worked to develop, calibrate, and test CdZnTe detectors for NuSTAR. I describe the CdZnTe detectors in comprehensive detail here-from readout procedures to data analysis. Detailed calibration of detectors is necessary for analyzing astrophysical source data obtained by the NuSTAR. I discuss the design and implementation of an automated setup for calibrating flight detectors, followed by calibration procedures and results. Neutron stars are an excellent probe of fundamental physics. The maximum mass of a neutron star can put stringent constraints on the equation of state of matter at extreme pressures and densities. From an astrophysical perspective, there are several open questions in our understanding of neutron stars. What are the birth masses of neutron stars? How do they change in binary evolution? Are there multiple mechanisms for the formation of neutron stars? Measuring masses of neutron stars helps answer these questions. Neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries have masses close to their birth mass, providing an opportunity to disentangle the role of "nature" and "nurture" in the observed mass distributions. In 2006, masses had been measured for only six such objects, but this small sample showed the greatest diversity in masses among all classes of neutron star binaries. Intrigued by this diversity-which points to diverse birth masses-we undertook a systematic survey to measure the masses of neutron stars in nine high-mass X-ray binaries. In this book, I present results from this ongoing project.

Book Synopsis Spectroscopy and Mass Measurements of Neutron Rich Isotopes by the (t, . Cap Alpha.) Reaction by :
Download or read book Spectroscopy and Mass Measurements of Neutron Rich Isotopes by the (t, . Cap Alpha.) Reaction written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutron excess of the triton makes its possible to use this projectile in transfer reactions to reach nuclei of greater neutron excess than the target nucleus. Principal examples of such reactions are the (t, .cap alpha.), (t, p) and (t, 3He) reactions, all of which have been used to study neutron rich nuclei. The present report discusses several of these examples and reports on more definitive mass measurements and spectrosopy of the low lying levels of some of these nuclei. In particular, results of using a polarized triton beam are discussed as this study leads to many new spin assignments.

This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron stars, whether isolated or in a binary system, display a varied and complex phenomenology, often accompanied by extreme variability of many time scales, which takes the form of pulsations due to the object rotation, quasi-periodicities associated to accretion of matter, and explosions due to matter accreted on the surface or to starquakes of highly magnetized objects. This book gives an overview of the current observational and theoretical standpoint in the research on the physics under the extreme conditions that neutron stars naturally provide. The six chapters explore three physical regions of a neutron star: the space around it, where accretion and pulsar companions allow testing of general relativity its surface, where millisecond pulsation and X-ray burts provide clues about general relativistic effects and the equation of state of neutron matter its interior, of course, inaccessible to direct observations, can nevertheless, be probed with all observational parameters related to neutron star variability.

Book Synopsis Direct Mass Measurements in the Light Neutron-rich Region Using a Combined Energy and Time-of-flight Technique by :
Download or read book Direct Mass Measurements in the Light Neutron-rich Region Using a Combined Energy and Time-of-flight Technique written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, masses have been determined one at a time via decay or reaction Q-value measurements. In general only after several such individual measurements could one establish a trend in the binding energies and thus develop an improved understanding of the nuclear mass surface. With the advancement of online mass spectrometers, it became possible to measure long isotopic sequences. Although only alkali elements have been extensively measured to date, this technique has proved successful in revealing sudden changes in nuclear structure and in pointing out systematic deficiencies of various mass models. In the experiment described herein, we have worked to extend mass measurement capabilities one step further with the development of a more general approach in which a whole series of nuclei can be measured simultaneously, independent of their N or Z. Below we demonstrate that direct mass measurements can be performed for fast recoiling nuclei using a combined energy and time-of-flight (i.e., M proportional to ET2) technique.
Book Synopsis Direct Mass Measurements of Neutron-rich 86Kr Projectile Fragments and the Persistence of Neutron Magic Number N by :
Download or read book Direct Mass Measurements of Neutron-rich 86Kr Projectile Fragments and the Persistence of Neutron Magic Number N written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In this paper, we present direct mass measurements of neutron-rich 86 Kr projectile fragments conducted at the HIRFL-CSR facility in Lanzhou by employing the Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) method. The new mass excesses of 52–54 Sc nuclides are determined to be −40492(82), −38928(114), −34654(540) keV, which show a significant increase of binding energy compared to the reported ones in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012 (AME12). In particular, 53 Sc and 54 Sc are more bound by 0.8 MeV and 1.0 MeV, respectively. The behavior of the two neutron separation energy with neutron numbers indicates a strong sub-shell closure at neutron number N =32 in Sc isotopes.
