Book excerpt: Measurements of the Ƭ lepton polarization and forward-backward polarization asymmetry near the Z° resonance using the OPAL detector are described. The measurements are based on analyses of [special characters omitted] decays from a sample of 144, 810 [special characters omitted] candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 151 pb-1. Assuming that the Ƭ lepton decays according to V-A theory, the average Ƭ polarization near [special characters omitted] is measured to be [special characters omitted] = (-14.10 ± 0.73 ± 0.55)% and the Ƭ polarization forward-backward asymmetry to be [special characters omitted] = (-10.55 ± 0.76 ± 0.25)%, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Taking into account the small effects of the photon propagator, photon-Z° interference and photonic radiative corrections, these results can be expressed in terms of the lepton neutral current asymmetry parameters: AƬ = 0.1466 ± 0.0076 ± 0.0057, Ae = 0.1464 ± 0.0108 ± 0.0036. These measurements are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and combine to give [special characters omitted] = 0.1455 ± 0.0073. Within the context of the standard model this combined result corresponds to sin [special characters omitted] = 0.23172 ± 0.00092. Combining these results with those from the other OPAL neutral current measurements yields a value of sin [special characters omitted] = 0.23211 ± 0.00068.

Book Synopsis A Measurement of the ([tau] Polarization at the Z Resonance with the DELPHI Detector at LEP. by :
Download or read book A Measurement of the ([tau] Polarization at the Z Resonance with the DELPHI Detector at LEP. written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polarization of [tau] leptons produced in the reaction e[sup +]e[sup [minus]] [yields] [tau][sup +][tau][sup [minus]] near the peak of the Z[degree] resonance has been measured using a sample of 24904 [tau][sup +][tau][sup [minus]] events, with an estimated background of 1.5%. We have selected 4562 [tau] [yields] e[nu][bar [nu]] 2218 [tau] [yields] [pi][nu] and 5133 [tau] [yields] [rho][nu] candidates. The mean value obtained is P[sub [tau]] = [minus]0.176 [plus-minus] 0.029. This corresponds to a ratio of the neutral current vector to the axial-vector coupling constants of the [tau] lepton of g[sub V][sup [tau]]/g[sub A][sup [tau]] = 0.088 [plus-minus] 0.014. This leads to a value of the electroweak mixing angle of sin[sup 2][theta][sub W] = 0.2280 [plus-minus] 0.0036. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements of the weak mixing angle from the study of the Z[degree] lineshape and the forward-backward asymmetries in the processes Z[degree] [yields] l[sup +]l[sup [minus]] and Z[degree] [yields] q[bar q].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supernovae explosion, combustion of solar hydrogen to form helium, heavy quark decay, or nuclear beta radiation, all weak interaction phenomena, are not unrelated to electromagnetism, but closely linked to it through the Higgs field. This ebook contains a modern introduction to the electroweak unification theory, as part of the so called Standard Model of particle physics. Not only some of the key theoretical ideas are exposed in a precise way, but also the experiments that revealed them. The main highlights of the theory consolidation process are examined which, concerning its experimental counterpart, span over 40 years, from the discovery of neutral currents in1973 to the Higgs boson in 2012. The reader is assumed to have been introduced to Quantum Mechanics and theories based on the gauge invariance principle, and to be familiar with Dirac’s theory for the relativistic electron. The course is specially suited for undergraduate students in physics, as part of an optional subject of elementary particles. The course consists in nine lectures, that on the blackboard take about 90 minutes each. It contains a very select collection of problems and exercises, having as a connecting thread the calculation of the lifetime of elementary fermions and bosons, as well as the comprehension of some experimental results of historical relevance.
Book Synopsis The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon by : Fred Jegerlehner
Download or read book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon written by Fred Jegerlehner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g-2)/2 of the muon. The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations.
Book Synopsis Particle Physics Reference Library by : Herwig Schopper
Download or read book Particle Physics Reference Library written by Herwig Schopper and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first open access volume of the handbook series contains articles on the standard model of particle physics, both from the theoretical and experimental perspective. It also covers related topics, such as heavy-ion physics, neutrino physics and searches for new physics beyond the standard model. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access
