They are meaningless to men and women who are out Of sympathy with God. That is why it is SO hard to get the gospel actually at work throughout our Social life. Sin is a fact that cannot be overlooked by social reformers any more than by any one else. It takes sound tim ber to make a sound ship; and it takes regenerate souls to make a regenerated society. The gospel is the message of a salvation assured to individuals and society who accept Jesus as their Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Gospel and the New Era The scope of the social task of the Church presents a multiplicity of opportunities and a diversity of ac tivities for service, but these should not bewilder or con fuse any one. The larger outlook tends to promote a common interest in the general work of the Church throughout the world and to evoke greater concentra tion and loyalty to the ideal of realizing a localized kingdom of heaven in each separate community. The successive chapters are closely related. Their unity and coherence are involved in the principles un derlying the social ideal of Jesus, Whose leadership is recognized throughout. The book Will have served its purpose if it meets the felt want of pastors, laymen and students for a compact statement of the Church's social task, together With its limitations and privileges. The list of books at the end of each chapter Will help the reader to pursue further the subjects treated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Value of the Gospel The basis of durable social work is religion. Its motive power is charity in its Christian sense. The general principles of social well-being and the true spirit of Christianity lead us back to the teachings of Christ. Hitherto we have possessed no Catholic work in English on the precise subject of the social import of the Gospel; and since correct views upon this particular matter are necessary for those engaged in social work, Miss E. Willson accepted the task of translating the volume of M. Leon Garriguet entitled La Valeur Sociale de l'Evangile. The scope of this work is confined to the teachings of the Gospel, the teaching of the Apostolic writings being merely incidentally referred to. Neither does the author deal in any way with the motives or spirit of Christian charity. The purpose of the book is to state the position taken up by Christ on the general questions of wealth, poverty, property, community of goods, socialism and economic progress. It may be here mentioned that quotations have been taken either from the English originals of works referred to, or from English translations of other works, whenever such exist. For the assistance of the general reader a brief account is supplied of the authors whose works are cited in the course of the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Social Gospel, Vol. 18 An address which I delivered at the Evangelical-Social Congress at Darmstadt during Whitsun-week 1903 is here presented in an expanded form, with considerable alterations; and I hope the matter at issue is thereby brought into greater prominence. The subject proposed for discussion at the Congress was the relation between the moral ideas of Jesus and the development of social morality to-day. But to the Christian community at the present time it is of far greater consequence that it should first of all attain and firmly grasp the point of view without which it is impossible for these ideas of Jesus to be understood. The purpose of the following pages is to show that the moral directions of Jesus are not complex in their demands, but require of us simply that one thing that can alone bestow upon the will singleness of aim, and produce in us a steadfast, independent attitude of mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the Age: Sermons on Special Occasions The sermons contained in this volume were preached, as their title states, on special occasions. They were selected for publication not as possessing, for that reason, any special merit, but because they were the only ones the publication of which was possible for their author. The preacher of what are called extempore sermons - that is to say, sermons not read from manuscript, but delivered from brief notes - cannot reproduce them in print unless they happen to have been taken down at the time by a reporter. Such reports can hardly ever be verbatim, and are for the most part more' or less imperfect and inaccurate. The process of revising them and of supplying their omissions, with a view to publica tion, is not an easy one, even when attempted after the lapse of a few days - still less so after that of years; and its results are rarely quite satisfactoryeither to the author or the reader. A sermon thus patched and mended has neither the freshness and point of the extempore nor the smoothness and sustained thought of the written composition. It is neither a religious speech, which the extempore sermon ought to be - nor a religious essay, which the written sermon ought to be; and it runs the risk of uniting the defects of both styles with the merits of neither. Such as it is, however, this method was the only one available for me, when, in compli ance with many and repeated requests, I employed the enforced leisure of a long convalescence in pre paring for the press those few sermons of mine which have been reported with sufficient accuracy to allow of the attempt to reproduce them in somewhat better form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable history of the powerful and influential social gospel movement. The global crises of child labor, alcoholism and poverty were all brought to our attention through the social gospel movement. Its impact on American society makes it one of the most influential developments in American religious history. Christopher H. Evans traces the development of the social gospel in American Protestantism, and illustrates how the religious idealism of the movement also rose up within Judaism and Catholicism. Contrary to the works of previous historians, Evans demonstrates how the presence of the social gospel continued in American culture long after its alleged demise following World War I. Evans reveals the many aspects of the social gospel and their influence on a range of social movements during the twentieth century, culminating with the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. It also explores the relationship between the liberal social gospel of the early twentieth century and later iterations of social reform in late twentieth century evangelicalism. The Social Gospel in American Religion considers an impressive array of historical figures including Washington Gladden, Emil Hirsch, Frances Willard, Reverdy Ransom, Walter Rauschenbusch, Stephen Wise, John Ryan, Harry Emerson Fosdick, A.J. Muste, Georgia Harkness, and Benjamin Mays. It demonstrates how these figures contributed to the shape of the social gospel in America, while arguing that the movement’s legacy lies in its profound influence on broader traditions of liberal-progressive political reform in American history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gospel Sermons We learn from the first chapter of the Book of Revelation that the Apostle John, while an exile on the isle of Patmos, was carried up by the Spirit on the Lord's day into the immediate presence of God and the host of heaven. The visions which passed before him were grander and more sublime than were ever portrayed by the pen of the poet or pencil of the painter. He sees an exalted and awful throne, surrounded by angels and saints and innumerable living and immortal beings; and he hears the music from the harp of angels mingling with the thunders issuing from the throne of God, and the very voice of the Almighty, as it were the voice of many waters.
