Book excerpt: Situated in the midst of the Nebraska sand hills, Lincoln County Nebraska was the home of the legendary scout and entertainer Buffalo Bill Cody. In this first of a two part series, the Prairie Years starts with the colonial era and takes the reader through the 1920s. The arrival of the Union Pacific railroad, the settlement of the frontier by the homesteaders, the creation, flourishing and decline of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show will guide readers through the frontier years of Lincoln County. Beyond that were the newspaper wars of the 1890s, labor unrest and a rail strike at the start of the century, the harassment of German Americans during the Great War, public corruption of the 1920s with the prosecution of the courthouse gang and racial unrest that ended the decade. Readers will also learn of the innovations, the massive railroad repair yards built in North Platte, the rise of populist politicians in the region, the construction of infrastructure in the form of airports for the new flying machines of the 1920s. The History of Lincoln County is also a history of the United States and the people who built it in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the City of Lincoln, Nebraska: With Brief Historical Sketches of the State and of Lancaster County; And Accurate Compilation of Facts and Historical Dates, Together With Many Interesting Reminiscences of the Early Days of Lincoln; The Lincoln of the to-Day and the Territory Over Which The authors of this work have undertaken the task of recording the history, of Lincoln at this time, because they felt that it was a work that should be performed while it was still possible to get the facts from those who are personally cognizant of them. Even at this time, only twenty-two years away from the founding of the city, much difficulty has been experienced in getting the absolute facts of the early days; and while great care has been taken to secure strict accuracy in all the features of this work, the authors cannot hope to have been en tirely successful in their endeavor. But the volume is given to the public with the request that such credit be given to it as is due to work conscientiously and honestly performed. History is made rapidly in this representative city of a wonderfully developing State, and the authors of this work expect to continue in the future the work they have begun in the following pages. They therefore request all who read this volume to notify them of any inaccuracies that may be dis covered in its pages, and to communicate to them any facts omitted herein and which would be of interest and value to the people of Lin coln and of the State as a part of the city's history. The authors de sire to express their thanks to those persons who have generously assisted in the preparation of these pages, among whom may be men tioned Hon. C. H. Gere, Hon. John Gillespie, Col. Simon Benadom, Hon. Thomas Hyde, Hon. John S. Gregory, Major Bohanan, and others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Nebraska Book Award Never Caught Twice presents the untold history of horse raiding and stealing on the Great Plains of western Nebraska. By investigating horse stealing by and from four Plains groups—American Indians, the U.S. Army, ranchers and cowboys, and farmers—Matthew S. Luckett clarifies a widely misunderstood crime in Western mythology and shows that horse stealing transformed plains culture and settlement in fundamental and surprising ways. From Lakota and Cheyenne horse raids to rustling gangs in the Sandhills, horse theft was widespread and devastating across the region. The horse’s critical importance in both Native and white societies meant that horse stealing destabilized communities and jeopardized the peace throughout the plains, instigating massacres and murders and causing people to act furiously in defense of their most expensive, most important, and most beloved property. But as it became increasingly clear that no one legal or military institution could fully control it, would-be victims desperately sought a solution that would spare their farms and families from the calamitous loss of a horse. For some, that solution was violence. Never Caught Twice shows how the story of horse stealing across western Nebraska and the Great Plains was in many ways the story of the old West itself.
