As a result of this trend, teachers need to be prepared to integrate technology into their teaching, and teacher preparation programs have a responsibility to prepare their students accordingly. The handheld computer (PDA) is a potentially useful way to integrate technology into the classroom. Physical education is a field in which technology can potentially impact the areas of research and classroom teaching. The purpose of this study was to explore pre-service physical education teachers' attitudes toward, and use of, handheld technology and to determine what factors play a role in the decision-making process on whether to use technology. Data collected from surveys, interviews, focus groups, observations, and project reflection papers, presented mixed results. Despite the initial interest in integrating technology into their teaching, a decline in interest and opinions followed. Merely using the PDA was not enough to bring full integration and sustained use into their classes.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the effect of handheld computer integration in a secondary social studies methods course on the attitudes of pre-service teachers toward technology integration in social studies classrooms. An existing instrument, the Computer Attitude Scale (CAS), was modified into the Handheld Computer Attitude Scale (HCAS), and pilot tested with a sample of 94 pre-service teachers in secondary social studies, math, and language arts training programs at a public university in the Great Lakes Region. During the 2003-2004 academic year, the HCAS was administered three times to this pilot sample, and was found to measure three underlying factors: handheld anxiety, handheld usefulness, and working with handheld computers. Both validity and reliability were established for a shortened, 27-item instrument. The main phase of the study examined the effect of handheld computer integration on pre-service teacher attitudes toward technology integration in secondary social studies classrooms. Participants during this phase consisted of 36 pre-service teachers enrolled in two sections of a secondary social studies methods course at the same institution as the participants in the pilot sample. Participants completed the HCAS three times throughout the 2004-2005 academic year. Repeated measures MANOVA indicated that there is a statistically significant, positive difference over time of the combination of the three factors (handheld anxiety, handheld use, working with handhelds) across groups. This means that handheld use in a pre-service teacher social studies course has a positive effect on pre-service teachers' attitudes toward handheld computers over time. Univariate, post-hoc analysis showed that there is a statistically significant, positive difference over time for the factor handheld use only. The results emphasize the importance of validating instruments with a similar sample before actual data is collected. Moreover, the findings from the main study provide cautious optimism for the impact of handheld technology integration in teacher training programs on pre-service teacher attitudes toward technology integration in secondary social studies classrooms.

This is true in the education milieu where teachers exercise the autonomy to decide on what and how technology will be used for teaching and learning purposes. Although they are guided by national and local policies to use technology in the classrooms, teachers spent much of their planning time to consider how technology could be harnessed for effective lesson delivery and assessment to be conducted. These circumstances have provided the impetus for researchers to study technology acceptance in educational settings. One of the fields that are most rapidly affected by these developments is undoubtedly education. Determination of the attitudes of preservice teachers, who live in an age of technology and get ready to raise future individuals, is of paramount importance both educationally and professionally. The purpose of this study was to analyze attitudes of preservice teachers towards technology and some variables that predict these attitudes (gender, daily duration of internet use, and the number of technical devices owned). 329 preservice teachers attending the education faculty of a large university in central Turkey participated, on a volunteer basis, in this study, where relational survey model was used as the research method. Research findings reveal that preservice teachers' attitudes towards technology are positive and at the same time, the attitudes of male preservice teachers towards technology are more positive than their female counterparts. As a result of the stepwise multiple regression analysis where factors predicting preservice teachers' attitudes towards technology, it was found that duration of daily internet use was the strongest predictor of attitudes towards technology.
