Book excerpt: While we have attempted to mention at least the most important developments in the theory of pre-equilibrium reactions, the volume of work in this area over the last few years has been so immense that it is not possible to give a comprehensive account of all that has been done. Our aim is to describe as clearly as we can the main physical ideas and to sketch the mathematical formulations that have been developed to enable practical calculations to be made. We attach particular importance to the detailed comparisons between theory and experiment because only in this way is it possible to assess the usefulness and validity of the theories that have been proposed.

Book excerpt: From international conference on nuclear physics; Munich, F.R. Germany (27 Aug 1973). The treatment of nuclear reactions involving complex nuclei is usually handled by turning it essentially into a two-body problem solvable by quadrature (direct reaction theory) or treating the many bodies by quasi- equilibrium theory. A large body of data, however, appears to deviate from the predictions of both approaches. Some general remarks are made concerning the problem of pre-compound decay'', and then the Monte Carlo simulation, Boltzmann equation, and exciton model are described in moderate detail. The models are intercompared, and the present situation and prospects are sketched. (13 figures) (RWR).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boltzmann master equation (BME) is defined for application to precompound decay in heavy ion reactions in the 10 100 MeV/nucleon regime. Predicted neutron spectra are compared with measured results for central collisions of 2°Ne and 12C with 165Ho target nuclei. Comparisons are made with subthreshold .pi.° yields in heavy ion reactions between 35 and 84 MeV/nucleon, and with the .pi.° spectra. The BME is found to be an excellent tool for investigating these experimentally observed aspects of non-equilibrium heavy ion reactions. 18 refs., 8 figs.

This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features material presented at the La Rábida 2018 International Scientific Meeting on Nuclear Physics, which was based on a well-known series of triennial international summer schools on Nuclear Physics organized from 1982 to 2003 by the Basic Nuclear Physics group at the University of Seville and latter, from 2009 to 2018, by the University of Seville and the University of Huelva. The meeting offered graduate students and young researchers a broad overview of the field of nuclear physics. The book includes contributions from invited speakers on topics such as a state-of-the-art nuclear shell model and selected aspects of mass spectroscopy. Other chapters present an introduction to shell model, a review of experimental nuclear reactions, a discussion of the theory of nuclear reactions and an overview of nuclear medicine. Further, the posters and seminars presented by students offer fresh perspectives on various problems current in nuclear physics.
