Book excerpt: It is often assumed that the judiciary—especially the Supreme Court—provides the best protection of our religious freedom. Louis Fisher, however, argues that only on occasion does the Court lead the charge for minority rights. More likely it is seen pulling up the rear. By contrast, Congress frequently acts to protect religious groups by exempting them from general laws on taxation, social security, military service, labor, and countless other statutes. Indeed, legislative action on behalf of religious freedom is an American success story, but one that renowned constitutional authority Fisher argues has been poorly understood by most of us. Taking in the full span of American history, Fisher demonstrates that over the course of two centuries of American government Congress has often been in the forefront of establishing and protecting rights that have been neglected, denied, or unrecognized by the Court-and that statutory provisions far outstrip, in both number and importance, the court cases that have expanded religious rights. In this concise and insightful book, Fisher presents a series of important case studies that explain how Supreme Court rulings on religious liberty have been challenged and countermanded by public pressures, legislation, and independent state action. He tells how religious groups interested in securing the rights of conscientious objectors received satisfaction by taking their cases to Congress, not the courts; how public uproar over a 1940 Supreme Court ruling sustaining compulsory flag-salutes resulted in a court reversal; and how Congress intervened in a 1986 ruling upholding a military prohibition of skullcaps for Jews. By describing other controversies such as school prayer, Indian religious freedom, the religious use of peyote, and statutory exemptions for religious organizations, Fisher convincingly demonstrates that we must understand the political and not just the judicial context for the safeguards that protect religious minorities. As this book shows, the origin and growth of an individual's right to believe or not believe—and the securing of that right—has occurred almost entirely outside the courtroom. Religious Liberty in America persuasively challenges judicial supremacists on church-state issues and provides a highly readable introduction for all students and citizens concerned with their right to believe as they wish.

In Praying the News, concerned readers will find a practical guide to discovering the power, joy and peace of partnering with God. Veteran news reporters Wendy Griffith and Craig von Buseck offer an unvarnished assessment of the media as well as a comprehensive biblical plan for effective, world-changing prayer. They tell behind-thescenes stories not only of effective prayer for the news but also stories of their prophetic intercession while reporting the news. Bad news is no match for the Good News of God’s kingdom! Praying the News will meet a huge need in the coming months and years, since many events are coming that will shake our nation, and believers will need a book like this to help them pray into, and pray through, what is coming. Great shakings are coming on earth, but great breakthroughs, glory, blessings are coming from heaven to all who call on the name of the Lord (Isa 60:1-2; Joel 2:32).

Book excerpt: The news reports were nonstop now, and for the rest of the world, this must have seemed like they were witnessing a made-for-television drama. One news anchor person said it like this: In an unprecedented chain of events, tonight the Bethany family has been decimated. In three separate but tragic accidents, Jo and Eva Bethany have lost their four children in one night. After all this family has endured over the past year, you would think that they have had their run of bad luck. But it seems that this is not the case. Remember the scandal involving George, the youngest Bethany, with the allegations of homosexuality-That cost him a lucrative baseball career. Then there was the allegation of an extramarital affair by the older brother James. That too turned out to be bogus. We also all remember the blockbuster trial of the decade in which Destiny Bethany-Lorber was found guilty only to be vindicated in open court at her sentencing. For years, this reporter thought the Bethany family was truly blessed. I now believe that they are the modern-day version of the Kennedys. This family must be cursed! How else would you explain this bizarre chain of events? Mmmmm. Thats my commentary, and thats the news for tonight. We know you have a lot of choices. . . Thank you for watching Firsthand Account News. Good night.

Book excerpt: In the spring of 1939, life at Highfield, a twenty-two-room vacation home on nine hundred acres in Suffolk on Prince Edward Island, should prove idyllic. Michael Moreland, the superintendent of the manor, and Susan Moncrieff, the daughter of Sir Richard and Lady Richard Moncrieff, Highfield’s owners, look forward to their wedding just a few months away. Susan and her mother have arrived on the island only recently, sent by Sir Richard from Clifton Manor, the Moncrieff family home in Suffolk, England. A retired rear admiral of the Royal Navy, Sir Richard serves as a senior SIS strategist in London, monitoring the growth of the Nazi war machine on the continent. Convinced that war is imminent, he purchased Highfield to provide for the safety of his wife and daughter. With two sons serving as officers in the Royal Navy, and certain that war is imminent, the family braces for what seems to be the inevitable. With German operatives newly detected on the island, and German U-boats already on patrol in the North Atlantic, how will the island and her people fare as they face the threat of the next war?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOX News Radio reporter Todd Starnes is a self-professed “gun toting, chicken eating son of a Baptist” whose Dispatches from Bitter America is “a collection of stories from my travels across this country (and) conversations I’ve had with regular folks who have deep concerns about the direction we are going as a nation.” In his award-winning, satire-meets-serious writing style, Starnes jumps headfirst into the current culture war, taking on the topics that are dear to every American: religion, health care, freedom, country music, barbeque, and so forth. Along the way, he shares exclusive interviews with political commentator Sean Hannity, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, cooking sensation Paula Deen, and pop singer Amy Grant, always hoping to go from bitter to better. Endorsements: "In Dispatches From Bitter America this 'Great American' finds that not only is our American way of life under attack, but also that most Americans do in fact love God, this country, their families, and are anything but bitter!" Sean Hannity, New York Times best-selling author, FOX News host of Hannity "Todd Starnes combines sound research with his signature wit to tell the stories of regular Americans who are standing up to a secular movement that seeks to remove all religious expression from the public square. This is a compelling book that puts our entire existence into the perspective of eternity." Tony Perkins, president, Family Research Council "You will cheer for America while laughing your head off!" Matt Patrick, News/Talk 740 KTRH in Houston, TX "Todd Starnes captures the sentiments many Americans feel as they helplessly watch the traditional values they grew up with being stomped out and over-ruled by political correctness. Todd's stories will strike a chord, whether it's 'The War on Christmas,' 'Tag, You're Out,' or 'The Chocolate Czar.' Brownies now banned from school? Bah humbug." Gretchen Carlson, co-host, Fox and Friends "Dispatches from Bitter America features Todd Starnes at his best. With his trademark wit, Todd tackles questions being asked by Americans who wonder what is happening to our country. Starnes manages to get to the heart of the matter in a way that is both packed with information and sprinkled with humor. Todd Starnes is a man of immense faith, madly in love with our country, and endowed by his Creator with the unique talent to tell a story like very few can. Simply put, Dispatches From Bitter America is the best book that I have read this year!" Jeff Katz, morning host, Talk Radio 1200 in Boston, MA "Todd Starnes is a masterful storyteller. In Dispatches of a Bitter America, he offers commentary on today's current events through the lens of a self-proclaimed gun toting, fried-chicken-eating son of a Baptist. Todd has always been one of my favorite news personalities and good friends. Now he is one of my favorite storytellers. Warning: don't start reading this book unless you are prepared to finish it. It's just that good." Thom S. Rainer, president and CEO, LifeWay Christian Resources

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of the very successful A Diary of Prayer: Daily Meditations on the Parables of Jesus, J. Barrie Shepherd now offers prayers for the forty days, drawing on some of the best-loved passages of Scriptures. In the tradition of John Baille's great British classic A Diary of Private Prayer, Shepherd provides daily morning and evening reflections based on such well-known passages from the Sermon on the Mount as the Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer, the salt of the earth, and the lilies of the field. Each day begins with a Bible verse and is followed by prayers for morning and evening based on the verse. For example, reflecting on the passage Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven," Shepherd writes:"Help me this day, as I confront the poor, ...help me to see them as you always knew them... brothers, sisters, fellow members of God's family. Then encourage me to spend my time, my gifts, my self in such ways as even yet may prove a blessing to at least one other human being who is less well off than I. Amen."This is a book for anyone, clergy as well as laity, interested in recapturing the original power and challenges of Jesus' words.
