In her book, she explores the central questions posed by the early havurot and their founders. She also examines the havurah as a development of American Judaism, continuing—rather than rejecting—many of the previous generations' ideas about religion. Combining history and ethnography, Prell uses current theories about ritual and prayer to understand men's and women's struggles with their religious tradition and their desire to create community.
Book Synopsis A Community Called Taize by : Jason Brian Santos
Download or read book A Community Called Taize written by Jason Brian Santos and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2010-01-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taizé--the word is strangely familiar to many throughout the contemporary church. Familiar, perhaps, because the chanted prayers of Taizé are well practiced in churches throughout the world. Strangely, however, because so little is known about Taizé--from its historic beginnings to how the word itself is pronounced. The worship of the Taizé community, as it turns out, is best understood in the context of its greater mission. On the day Jason Brian Santos arrived in the Taizé community its leader was brutally murdered before his eyes. Instead of making Santos want to leave, the way the community handled this tragedy made him long to stay and learn more about this group of people who could respond to such evil with grace and love. In this book he takes us on a tour of one of the world's first ecumenical monastic orders, from its monastic origins in the war-torn south of 1940s France to its emerging mission as a pilgrimage site and spiritual focal point for millions of young people throughout the world. In A Community Called Taizé you'll meet the brothers of the order and the countless visitors and volunteers who have taken upon themselves a modest mission: pronouncing peace and reconciliation to the church and the world.

Download or read book Prayer Revolution written by John Smed and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you praying constricted prayers or disruptive ones? Most prayers are constricted ones. They’re prayers that only focus on one part of the Lord’s Prayer: “give us our daily bread.” They’re usually focused on self and envision God as a heavenly caretaker. Disruptive prayers, on the other hand, are powerful, uncommon, and deeply biblical. They focus on God rather than self, seek to advance the kingdom, and submit all things to God. They are also prayed with a profound belief that prayer actually accomplishes something. When we pray disruptive prayers, that’s when the revolution begins. This book shows you how to equip leaders, fuel kingdom movements, and do real damage to the powers of darkness in the here and now. But most of all, discover how your own heart will be transformed as you begin to see how much bigger prayer, and God, is than you ever thought possible.

Book Synopsis Spiritually Revitalizing Your Community of Faith through Prayer by : Robert Arthur Hansen, DMin
Download or read book Spiritually Revitalizing Your Community of Faith through Prayer written by Robert Arthur Hansen, DMin and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-08-03 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we enter a Community of Faith for the first time, we are naturally drawn to a shared spirituality. It may be a congregation, synagogue, mosque, or temple. It is shared spiritually of the people at prayer which attracts us and draws us to unite with others in prayer. There are three shared stands of any Community of Faith: their shared faith tradition, the culture of the community, and the personalities of the members. This book examines the elements of tradition, culture, and personal temperament to determine how the three become spiritually integrated at the moment of prayer. The conclusion is that through an explicit assessment of these three elements, members of the faith community can enrich their personal spiritual life, resulting in spiritual growth and can ultimately revitalize the spiritual prayer life of the community of faith. The books is a spiritual intervention of a Presbyterian congregation in Central New York in the 1980s. I'm grateful for the prayer group that committed there Wednesday nights during 1986. This is their story of how they were able to revitalize the spiritual life of a 150-year-old three-hundred-member Presbyterian congregation.
Book Synopsis Charisma and Community by : Mary Jo Neitz
Download or read book Charisma and Community written by Mary Jo Neitz and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Comte, social scientists have tended to assume that modèrnization, along with a trièµ´mphant scientific rationality, has destroyed the legitimacy of religion as a social reality. However, this crisis of legitè¹macy has never been examined in a setting where religious realè¹ty is affirmed. This book fills that gap, exploring the meaning of religious reality in the lives of a group of Catholic Charismatics to discover how belief is created, developed, and maintained. Charismatics, or Neo-Pentecostals, tend to be white, relaè² ively affluent, well educated, and believe that they possess certain gifts including the power of healing, prophesy, discernè¡«ent of evil spirits, and speakè¹ng in tongues. In describing and analyzing this religious minority, the author provides a basis for reevaluating sociological asè²umptions about religion and modernity. She asks: to what exè² ent can religion define the soèial world? Are religious values necessarily irrelevant to most institutional contexts? Is reè¡igious reality only persuasive in the context of family and priè¡«ary group relations? What are the tensions between religious realities and other beliefs? Her answers have implications for all ways of making sense of the world, including common sense or science. Neitz situates the Charismatic Renewal in a broader social and historical context. She examines the antecedents of Neo-Pentecostalism in American culture and compares this movement with the secular, self-awareness movement. In so doing she shows what is unique about the Charismatics, and what they share with religious predeèessors and members of contemè¨orary secular movements.
