Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acupuncture in the Treatment of Pain is aimed at both beginners and experienced practitioners who are treating patients with painful conditions. It provides an integrative approach using conventional and traditional Chinese Medicine in the treatment of pain with acupuncture. It is especially suited for conventionally (western) trained physicians, who are interested in complementary approaches and seek a guideline to judge the potentials and limits of acupuncture in the treatment of pain. The book consists of two parts. The first part (chapter 2-8) gives the background for both traditional Chinese concepts to pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of pain and basics of the conventional, western approach to pain treatment. The second part (chapter 9-17) gives detailed information for the integrative treatment of all common painful conditions. For every single indication, conventional and traditional Chinese treatment options (including Chinese phytotherapy) are shown and the value of acupuncture, scientific data about its efficacy, and its possible mode of action (in western-physiological terms) are discussed. For all readers this book offers a modern integrative approach, which is based on scientific data and the clinical experience of the authors that Western and Traditional Chinese medicine complement each other and can create synergistic effects. • Attractive 2 colour design• Written by a team of experts in the field• Includes more than 175 2 colour illustrations• Integrates western and traditional Chinese medicine

Book excerpt: There is a large increase in interest in acupuncture by health care consumers. The three main reasons for this are medical effectiveness, cost effectiveness and the credibility that clinical trials and physiological research have provided. Acupuncture is rapidly moving out of the arena of "alternative" medicine, in large part again because it is grounded more firmly than other alternative treatments in research. The book provides the reader with the up-to-date information on the clinical bases of acupuncture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are very pleased that it has become necessary after such a short time to publish a new edition of this handy guide to acupuncture, which is intended to combine practicality with an affordable price. It, just like the first edition, is based on our larger Acupunclure Textbook and Atlas, but we have taken this opportunity to revise and update the text. For example, several scientific advances have been included in Chapter 2 (e. g. , findings of recent studies on drug addiction, antiemetic effects, and urogenital efficacy). In response to numerous requests we have added a detailed account of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Chapter 8. Although most practitioners in the West have been using "scien tific" acupuncture (e. g. , stimulating peripheral nerves to release endorphins), a growing number are now trying TCM approaches. The mechanism of action of TCM is unknown: the method is based on empirical phenomenology and pattern recognition rather than cause-and-effect logic. Nevertheless, double-blind, controlled scien tific trials are required to determine whether TCM is more effective than "scientific" acupuncture. Scientific assessment of TCM in con trolled clinical trials is possible even in the absence of a scientific explanation of its mechanism of action, i. e. , even if we do not know how it works. Many successful Western medical procedures are empirical; for instance, gaseous anesthetics are used widely al though we do not understand how they work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This update of the bestselling book on Applied Kinesiology introduces a diagnostic method that uses manual muscle testing to assess the body's structure, chemistry, and psyche Manual muscle testing is a standard medical diagnostic technique that utilizes full-strength contraction of the muscle tested. An Applied Kinesiology (AK) muscle test uses this method to not only assess the general integrity of the muscle but to also reveal structural, chemical, and mental weaknesses. To perform an AK muscle test, the practitioner applies light pressure that the client then resists. If the client cannot resist the pressure, the muscle ‘tests weak,’ indicating a structural problem or imbalance that needs to be resolved. Further applications include working with a muscle that tests strong ‘in the clear’ as a diagnostic tool to determine the effect of stimuli including touch, nutrients, medicines, allergens, emotions, poor posture, and stressful memories. Opening with a detailed description of the history and applications of Applied Kinesiology, this book covers the theory, procedure, and interpretation of the muscle test, including diagnosis and correction techniques for areas of weakness. Thirty-three muscle tests for different areas of the body are accompanied by instructive photographs with superimposed anatomical drawings that demonstrate the method and various treatment points. A useful appendix includes a glossary of anatomical terms and special vocabulary; a step-by-step plan for conducting a session; and a list of contacts and sources for Applied Kinesiology materials. Offering a new preface and additional techniques in the areas of manual medicine, orthomolecular medicine, and psychology, Applied Kinesiology, Revised Edition shares the author's discoveries as well as anecdotal observations to stimulate further research. Table of Contents 1. From Biomechanics to Applied Kinesiology 2. Scientific Principles of Applied Kinesiology 3. The Muscle Test 4. Pretests 5. Diagnosis and Correction Techniques 6. Muscle Tests 7. Applied Kinesiology and Manual Medicine 8. Applied Kinesiology and Orthomolecular Medicine 9. Applied Kinesiology and the Psyche 10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a 60-person team of internationally renowned editors and authors presents a textbook of osteopathic medicine that is oriented towards clinical symptoms. Introductory chapters on history, philosophy and the spread of osteopathy are followed by a presentation of its scientific basis that clearly demonstrates how firmly osteopathy is rooted in science. Further chapters cover osteopathic research, diagnosis and principles of treatment. Two parts on therapeutic strategies in osteopathic practice form the core of this book. The first is divided into regions of the body, the second into clinical specialties that offer opportunities for osteopathic treatment. In both clinical parts, osteopathic therapy is presented in the entirety in which it is actually practiced - without the common but artificial separation of parietal, visceral and craniosacral treatment. First, the clinical symptom is explained from a medical perspective, then the osteopathic perspective and and treatment is presented. Thus, the title is not only suitable for conveying a profound understanding of osteopaths in training, be they doctors or non-medical practitioners, but also as a clinical reference of osteopathic medicine for everyday treatment.
