Download or read book Mafiacraft written by Deborah Puccio-Den and published by Hau. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Mafia? What is the Mafia? Something you eat? Something you drink? I don't know the Mafia. I have never seen it." So said Mommo Piromalli, a 'Ndrangheta crime boss, to a journalist in the seventies. In Mafiacraft, Deborah Puccio-Den explores the Mafia's reliance on the force of silence, and undertakes a new form of ethnographic inquiry that focuses on the questions, rather than the answers. For Puccio-Den, the Mafia is not a stable social fact, but a cognitive event shaped by actions of silence. Rather than inquiring about what has previously been written or said, she explores the imaginative power of silence and how it gives consistency to special kinds of social ties that draw their strength from a state of indetermination. What methods might anthropologists use to investigate silence and to understand the life of the denied, the unspeakable, and the unspoken? How do they resist, fight, or capitulate to the strength of words, or to the force of law? In Mafiacraft, Puccio-Den's addresses these questions with a fascinating anthropology of silence that opens up new ground for the study of the world's most famous criminal organization.

Download or read book Performance written by Hanna B Hölling and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on performance and performance-based artworks as seen through the lens of conservation, which has long been overlooked in the larger theoretical debates about whether and how performance remains. Unraveling the complexities involved in the conservation of performance, Performance: The Ethics and the Politics of Conservation and Care (vol. 1) brings this new understanding to bear in examining performance as an object of study, experience, acquisition, and care. In so doing, it presents both theoretical frameworks and functional paradigms for thinking about—and enacting—the conservation of performance. Further, while the conservation of performance is undertheorized, performance is nevertheless increasingly entering the art market and the museum, meaning that there is an urgent need for discourse on how to care for these works long-term. In recent years, a few pioneering conservators, curators, and scholars have begun to create frameworks for the longterm care of performance. This volume presents, explicates, and contextualizes their work so that a larger discourse can commence. It will thus serve the needs of conservation students and professors, for whom literature on this subject is sorely needed. This interdisciplinary book thus implements a novel rethinking of performance that will challenge and revitalize its conception in many fields, such as art history, theater, performance studies, heritage studies, and anthropology.

Book Synopsis Humanism and the Urban World by : Caspar Pearson
Download or read book Humanism and the Urban World written by Caspar Pearson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Humanism and the Urban World, Caspar Pearson offers a profoundly revisionist account of Leon Battista Alberti’s approach to the urban environment as exemplified in the extensive theoretical treatise De re aedificatoria (On the Art of Building in Ten Books), brought mostly to completion in the 1450s, as well as in his larger body of written work. Past scholars have generally characterized the Italian Renaissance architect and theorist as an enthusiast of the city who envisioned it as a rational, Renaissance ideal. Pearson argues, however, that Alberti’s approach to urbanism was far more complex—that he was even “essentially hostile” to the city at times. Rather than proposing the “ideal” city, Pearson maintains, Alberti presented a variety of possible cities, each one different from another. This book explores the ways in which Alberti sought to remedy urban problems, tracing key themes that manifest in De re aedificatoria. Chapters address Alberti’s consideration of the city’s possible destruction and the city’s capacity to provide order despite its intrinsic instability; his assessment of a variety of political solutions to that instability; his affinity for the countryside and discussions of the virtues of the active versus the contemplative life; and his theories of aesthetics and beauty, in particular the belief that beauty may affect the soul of an enemy and thus preserve buildings from attack.
