Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. On the basis of the historical precedents and motivations that led to the concern about the language, chapter I establishes the theoretical and methodological base (Linguistic Pragmatics) for the analysis of the language of the DRAE (Diccionario de la Real Academia Española). After having established the parameters concerning the language of the dictionary, the author analyses (chapter II) the most representative articles of the academic Dictionary, which works as the center of interest because they are an expression of judgments about the society. The object of chapters III and IV is the study of the appearance of new words and the disappearance of others, as well as of the lexical meaning and grammatical information of the same ones. We do the distinction between the definition in metalengua of the content (own definition) and the definition in metalengua of the sign (the improper definition). An important group of lexical entries function as performative words, which means that when we use them, they are changed into speech acts. The last chapter is dedicated to the analysis of set phrases or locutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by the latest research in the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics, El español y la lingüística aplicada responds to the central questions that lie at the heart of learning Spanish as a second or foreign language. What does it mean to know a language? Can technology help second language learners? How does studying abroad promote language acquisition? Framing chapters in terms of these and other critical areas of inquiry, Robert J. Blake and Eve C. Zyzik examine the linguistic challenges and pitfalls involved in Spanish-language learning and delve into practical implications for students and teachers. Written entirely in Spanish, some chapters focus on specific areas of Spanish grammar that tend to pose difficulty for learners, while others explore broad pedagogical themes related to the concept of proficiency, the nature of input, and the impact of learning context. Each chapter ends with a series of guided questions for reflection and further research. Designed to address the pre-service training needs of Spanish language professionals, El español y la lingüística aplicada will also be of interest to anyone wishing to develop linguistic expertise in this important world language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work represents a significant scientific advancement on text linguistics from three different viewpoints. The first chapter provides an overview of the history of text linguistics from a broader perspective than usual, offering a complete reference framework. The second chapter presents the procedural approach to the study of text linguistics in a concise way, including a critical comparison with other perspectives. The third chapter constructs a very unusual bridge between theoretical linguistics and classical studies in that it takes a literary text in Latin from the early imperial period as its case study. This combination is rare, as theoretical linguists are usually oriented to modern languages and classicists are not generally inclined to the study of formal linguistics. It also offers an interesting perspective that intersects the studies of general linguistics and glottology, which makes this volume of interest to general linguists, classicists, philologists and literary critics alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers recent developments in pragmatics and adjacent territories of investigation, including important new concepts such as the pragmatic act and the pragmeme, and combines developments in neighboring disciplines in an integrative holistic pragmatic approach. The young science of pragmatics has, from its inception, differentiated itself from neighboring fields in the humanities, especially the disciplines dealing with language and those focusing on the social and anthropological aspects of human behavior, by focusing on the language user in his or her societal environment. This collection of papers continues that emphasis on language use, and pragmatic acts in their context. The editors and contributors share a perspective that essentially considers language as a system for communication and wants to look at language from a societal perspective, and accept the view that acts of interpretation are essentially embedded in culture. In an interdisciplinary approach, some authors explore connections with social theory, in particular sociology or socio-linguistics, some offer a political stance (critical discourse analysis), others explore connections with philosophy and philosophy of language, and several papers address problems in theoretical pragmatics.

Book excerpt: Drawing on the recent renewal of interest in the debate on orality and literacy this book investigates the varying perceptions and representations of orality in contemporary Italian fiction, providing a fresh perspective on this rich and fast-developing debate and on the study of the Italian literary language. The book brings together a number of complementary approaches to orality from the fields of linguistics, literary and media studies and offers a detailed analysis of a broad variety of authors and texts that appeared over the last three decades - ranging from internationally acclaimed writers such as Celati, Duranti and Tabucchi, through De Luca and Baricco, to the latest generation of writers, such as Campo, Ballestra and Nove. By exploring the complementary facets of Italian orality, and its diachronical developments since the seventies, this study questions the traditionally dichotomic approach to the study of orality and literacy and posits a more flexible, cross-modal approach that accounts for the increasing hybridisation of text forms and media and for the greater interaction between the spoken and the written as well as their representations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The roots of pragmatics reach back to Antiquity, especially to rhetoric as one of the three liberal arts. However, until the end of the 18th century proto-pragmatic insights tended to be consigned to the pragmatic, that is rhetoric, wastepaper basket and thus excluded from serious philosophical consideration. It can be said that pragmatics was conceived between 1780 and 1830 in Britain, but also in Germany and in France in post-Lockian and post-Kantian philosophies of language. These early ‘conceptions’ of pragmatics are described in the first part of the book. The second part of the book looks at pragmatic insights made between 1830 and 1880, when they were once more relegated to the philosophical and linguistic underground. The main stage was then occupied by a fact-hunting historical comparative linguistics on the one hand and a newly spiritualised philosophy on the other. In the last part the period between 1880 and 1930 is presented, when pragmatic insights flourished and were sought after systematically. This was due in part to a new upsurge in empiricism, positivism and later behaviourism in philosophy, linguistics and psychology. Between 1780 and 1930 philosophers, psychologists, sociologists and linguists came to see that language could only be studied in the context of dialogue, in the context of human life and finally as being a kind of human action itself.

The present manual aims to establish this approach at an international level by assembling contributions that introduce its theoretical foundations, discuss connections with alternative approaches of text and discourse analysis, show the relevance of Discourse Traditions for the history of Romance languages, and explore possibilities for future applications of the concept.
