Book excerpt: This book's purpose is to highlight the development challenges and successes of implementing the Youth Climate Change Adaptation Development Framework in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Over the past decade, Sierra Leone has experienced a series of development challenges, including internal conflict and Ebola outbreaks in most recent times. The dire unemployment situation in Sierra Leone is compounded by the emergence of climate change that negatively impacts all aspects of daily life and wellbeing, and the education and training provided do not prepare young people adequately for the job market. Therefore, building youth resilience to adapt to the impact of climate change and other development problems is a significant development challenge faced by policymakers in Sierra Leone. The government, through funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB), has provided support for the implementation of a Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Project (YEEP) to reinforce the employability of Sierra Leone Youth as well as enhance their entrepreneurship and employment skills through the development of a framework that integrates education and vocational institutions with job market demand and supply. This approach has resulted in strengthening the occupational levels in the youth population segments of the country. This book discusses the objectives and outcomes of this project, including curricula for Sustainable Construction, training of counselors and administrators, providing youths with supervisory skills, and developing tools to assess youth development institutions' weaknesses and enhance institutional capacity to deliver climate change adaption for sustainable development programmes. The book can be used by policymakers from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and LDCs in Africa and Asia. It can be used by researchers working on Climate Change, Education, Sustainable Development, emphasising Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development in both developing and developed countries. It can also be used by practitioners involved in implementing innovations in youth development, employment, entrepreneurship, sustainable livelihoods initiatives, climate change adaptation, and mitigation. These practitioners and researchers would find this book an invaluable resource to support their work in the field.

Book excerpt: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through Finance, Technology and Law Reform Achieving the SDGs requires a fundamental rethink from businesses and governments across the globe. To make the ambitious goals a reality, trillions of dollars need to be harnessed to mobilise finance and accelerate progress towards the SDGs. Bringing together leaders from the World Bank, the financial and business sectors, the startup community and academia, this important, topically relevant volume explains what the SDGs are, how they came about and how they can be accelerated. Real-world case studies and authoritative insights address how to direct investment of existing financial resources and re-align the global financial system to reflect the SDGs. In depth chapters discuss how financial institutions, such as UBS Wealth Management, Manulife Asset Management and Moody’s Rating Agency are supporting the SDGs. The opportunities arising from Blockchain, Big Data, Digital Identity and cutting-edge FinTech and RegTech applications are explored, whilst the relevance of sustainable and transparent global supply chains is underscored. Significant attention is paid to law reform which can accelerate progress of the SDGs through SME Financing, Crowdfunding, Peer-to-Peer Lending and tax restructuring. To achieve the ‘World We Want’, much needs to be done. The recommendations contained within this book are critical for supporting a fundamental shift in thinking from business and governments around the world, and for building a more just and prosperous future for all.

Book excerpt: From an engineer and entrepreneur, a conversation-changing parenting book about how to engage young women in science, technology, engineering, and math, filled with practical advice for both parents and educators. As the female CEO of a tech startup, Dr. Cristal Glangchai was outnumbered twenty to one. At Google, Twitter, and Facebook, women currently fill just ten to twenty percent of technical jobs. While career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math have increased dramatically in the past twenty years, the achievement gap between men and women has only grown wider. In VentureGirls, Glangchai offers a unique solution based on her own experience as an engineer and entrepreneur as well as the founder of the VentureLab, an academy of entrepreneurship and technology for girls. Practical, accessible, and filled with success stories, VentureGirls argues that a key part of raising strong, confident young women is giving them the tools of entrepreneurship to engage in STEM. Entrepreneurship isn’t just about starting companies, Glangchai writes, it is a skillset and a way of thinking that is particularly useful in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. Entrepreneurship involves identifying needs, brainstorming creative solutions, innovating, and taking calculated risks. In short, it’s about having a vision and making it a reality. The true value in learning and practicing entrepreneurship, Glangchai argues, lies in nurturing and growing an overall mindset—the ability to learn from failure and to work well with others to bring your ideas to life. Deeply informative, warm, and grounded in real-world experience, VentureGirls includes a plethora of activities and lessons that focus on strengthening kids’ ingenuity and resilience. VentureGirls is essential reading for anyone who wants to raise girls and young women who realize their strength, engage in the world, and feel empowered to make a positive impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems like these days, whenever you look at a newsstand, at least one major business magazine has a cover story about a wildly successful entrepreneur in his or her 20s or 30s. That's not surprising when one considers that one out of every five small-business owners in America is under 35, and that more young people are starting businesses than ever before. Right now, in college dorm rooms and their parents' garages, the next generation of Sam Waltons, Bill Gateses, and Michael Dells are hard at work. "If you are ever going to take risks in exploring your career options, this is the absolute best time to do it," says 26-year-old entrepreneurial expert Jennifer Kushell. "Why wait until you have a semi-stable corporate job and major financial obligations to discover that you hate your career and need to make a big change?" Kushell is the ideal mentor for young people thinking about taking the plunge. Her very successful Young Entrepreneurs Network educates teens and twentysomethings in 40 countries about forming their own companies. A born entrepreneur -- her father and aunt are leading experts on franchising and trademark licensing, respectively -- Kushell presided over her own company's growth while attending college full-time. Her book draws on her invaluable hands-on experience: "It's not so much a how-to-start-a-business book as it is a how-to-cope-with-life-while-starting-and-succeeding-in-your-own-business book," the author says. "All I can say is that this is the real deal, the real story." With wit, candor and exuberance for her subject, Kushell gives practical and personal insight from a young entrepreneur's point of view to help new business owners get through their first few years. The book "also teaches you tricks of the trade that you can rely on to compete successfully in a business world with people twice your age and companies God-knows-how-many-times-as big," she adds. The Young Entrepreneur's Edge addresses key topics such as trying to obtain capital and writing a business plan, which, the author says, are among the biggest obstacles for young entrepreneurs. But the book also tackles critical areas that other business books rarely address: how to get older people to take you seriously; how not to starve when you're broke; how to win your family's approval; how to get out and meet important people; how not to get carded when entertaining clients; and other unique situations faced by young business people. Praise for The Young Entrepreneur's Edge "Fresh college graduates frustrated by the job search should pick up a copy of [this book]." --"Los Angeles Times" "Can help both job-seekers and job-holders rethink their idea of gainful employment." --"Mademoiselle" "Entertaining, fast-reading, and immensely sensible. Kushell is a human dynamo." --"Sacramento Bee" "Every young entrepreneur needs good ideas, and this book is full of them." --Fred Deluca, founder and president of Subway(R) Restaurants "It is a must-read for my students." --Kathleen R. Allen, Ph.D., The Entrepreneur Program, University of Southern California

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of fifteen (15) years of learning, research, travel journey, and successful case studies analysis about innovation and entrepreneurship in four continents. A journey that reflects the pursuit of views, beliefs, and opinions around the degree of strength or weakness, success, or failure of different entrepreneurship initiatives worldwide. Following their paths in the creation of a positive, and suitable entrepreneurship environment for the development and growth of innovative startups. The main purpose of this book is to provide policymakers, corporate leaders, young entrepreneurs, and academic researchers with practical tools and guidance that may enlighten their visions. A guide that will contribute positively to building a suitable environment for the development of entrepreneurship initiatives, will able them to implement a sustainable strategy for cultivating and growing innovative startups. The reader of this book may notice a slightly different approach used in describing the entrepreneurship and innovations ecosystems as the colony of innovative startups. The main idea behind that is the awareness about the current situation of different business climates, and the necessity for such a contribution to solving different problems that hindering the growth of innovative startups, and the sustainability of different entrepreneurship initiatives worldwide. I hope to achieve a maximum of success and growth that will have a positive impact on economic development. The Problem: Entrepreneurship Initiatives Are Popping-Up Dispersed and Disturbed There are thousands of entrepreneurship initiatives that pop-up like mushrooms every day. You can call them Excellent Polls, Innovative Clusters, Incubators, Hubs, Start-up Labs, Science-Parks, Tech-parks, etc. Initiatives with the ultimate goal to create the Next X Silicon Valley. An imitation effort to reproduce, without a single understanding of the context, the history, the resources, and the vision that led to the San Diego Silicon Valley, home of multi-billion tech-giants. Many concrete examples of these initiatives, which are still subject to critiques and sometimes to controversy, about their outcomes and real contributions to economic growth. Cases from the Munich Smart City in Germany; the Creative Cluster in Australia; Kista, and Ideon in Sweden; Technology Triangle of Waterloo in Canada; the Masdar of the UAE among many others. All these initiatives have different structures and their ways of contributing to the country’s GDP are also different. However, all of them have similar goals, which is the creation of a successful business environment for startups. An environment where several startups together with other stakeholders, play a vital role in the development of their national economy. Many of these initiatives are mainly consequences of the principle of Knowledge-based economies. Other are the results of a combination of interactions between different stakeholders inside the ecosystem, following the Triple Helix Model (Etzkowitz & Leydesdorff, 1995). Because they are geographically dispersed, it is almost impossible to measure the value added by every initiative in a single country. The focus is always on limited targets at a national level. These initiatives are also characterized by limited resources and actors, to cover large scale targets and have a significant contribution to the country’s economic development. The Solution: A colony That Consolidates and Reassembles Efforts This book is not introducing the secret formula to rebuild your own Silicon Valley. It proposes a logical solution to enhance and build a suitable, and positive climate for startups. To consolidate multiple entrepreneurship initiatives in one project, which will collect maximum resources and integrate a considerable number of players. The mainstream inspiration of this book comes from the phenomenal of the self-organized colony of ants, such a biological ecosystem of social insects that run and sustain its growth perfectly. A business model that inspires from the collective behavior of ants, which generated the swarm intelligence. A smart swarm reflected by tasks and labor organizations for every member within the colony. This book will try to export the ants' collective behavior “ Business Model” into the world of entrepreneurship and innovation. A model reflected by a new concept of building a positive environment for startups to grow and flourish, which I call in this book “A Colony of Innovative Startups.” It involves many stakeholders that interact together within a particular geographic space, where they can cooperatively allocate considerable resources and contribute to achieving the colony objectives of growth and sustainability.
