Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Rifle Shooting In my first book on Revolver Shooting, (published in 1901), I drew attention to the dangerous consequences which a nation may incur when excessive devotion to such games as cricket, golf and football, leads its men to ignore the art of handling firearms. Many partisans of these games were indignant at my remarks, but two regrettable wars have had a salutary influence in this respect. Public opinion now endorses my doctrine of the absolute necessity that every able-bodied man should be able to bring at least as much skill to the handling of a rifle as he evinces with the cricket bat or golf club. A second desideratum mooted in my book - that advancing civilisation ought to subordinate the arbitrament of arms to the decisions of an international Court of Arbitration, has, unfortunately, not been fulfilled as yet, though matters are trending that way. Until it is so fulfilled, men must be taught the proper handling of a rifle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pistol and Revolver Shooting On account of this relation, and the fact that skill with these arms can be instantly utilized in rifle shooting, the development of marksmanship with the pistol and revolver assumes national importance. While numerous standard works have been written on the subject of rifle shooting, there is comparatively little information available on pistol and revolver shooting. The object of this volume is to supply prac tical information on this subject. The author has attempted to treat the subject in a clear and concise manner, keeping the size of the volume as small as practicable and so as to be conveniently carried in the pocket. Particular pains have been taken to give sound advice and elementary instruction to beginners. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Five Years of Rifle Practice, 1851-1886, Vol. 1 of 6 The improved shooting of the champion military rifles at Creedmoor justifies this inference. Their methods of loading, however, are not upon record, and the public very generally believe that the excellent shooting, of which they hear, is due to the use of a rifle of superior excellence, or to a training through years of experience, aided by exceptional natural advantages. Such was, undoubtedly, the view taken by the public of the extraordinary performances of the match rifle teams sent to Ireland some ten years since. But subsequent experience has convinced hundreds and thousands that equal, and even better shooting, was attainable with rifles, furnished by a score of manufacturers, with factory car tridges. To obtain such shooting, however, with self-loaded cartridges and self-fabricated bullets, is not quite so easy; and to turn these elegant match rifles to practical use, or to Obtain practical shooting, for the sportsman or soldier, of equal nicety from them, or from sporting or military rifles, seems to be out of the question altogether, to the public generally. And yet it is hoped that, from a perusal of these pages, such results can be attained. We have alluded to two international contests between this. Country and England. The first was in 1877, when match rifles were used. The second was in 1882, and again in 1883, when military rifles were used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pistol and Revolver Shooting, Vol. 34 Interest in pistol and revolver shooting has increased very rapidly in recent years and particularly since smokeless powder has been introduced. The revolver and the magazine pistol now constitute part of the regular equipment of army and navy officers and cavalry troops. Regulations governing practice shooting with these arms have been issued and adopted by both branches of the service and by the National Guard of the various States. In the National Rifle Association and in the various State rifle associations that have recently been organized, pistol and revolver shooting has an important place, and the matches provided are largely patronized. In the numerous civilian shooting clubs scattered throughout the country pistol and revolver shooting has become extremely popular, and in many cases the majority of the members practice more frequently with the smaller arms than with the rifle. Practice with the pistol and revolver affords training in sighting, steady holding, and pulling the trigger, which are the essential features of rifle shooting also. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. Is at Chicopee Falls, Mass. It is equipped with the finest machinery for manufacturing the celebrated Stevens rifles, pistols and pocket rifles. Stevens rifles and pistols, from their high reputation, have found their way to every part of the civilized world, and, as a consequence, this company is in receipt of letters from various parts of the world asking for information in relation to rifle and pistol shooting. These questions cover a wide range of subjects. Most of our correspondents wish to know what rifles to select for particular purposes; the proper way to shoot a rifle or pistol; they inquire how to construct a suitable range; they also ask for recognized rules governing rifle and pistol shooting. As such information is difficult to procure, this Com pany has decided to publish in this booklet informa tion which is most frequently sought. A rifle is a gun, the inside of the barrel being cut with spiral grooves or channels, for the purpose of Spinning the bullets when the exploded powdercreates a gas and propels the bullet from the barrel; this Spinning motion giving range and accuracy to the bullet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Hints on Shooting: Being a Treatise on the Shot Gun and Its Management; Game, Wildfowl, and Trap Shooting; Together With Notes on Sporting Dogs and Ferrets, and Other Useful Information Relative to Shooting Although there have been several excellent works on guns and shooting published within the last few years, the majority of these books are intended for the use of sportsmen who have had more or less experience in shooting, and many of them are so full of technical expressions that a person unacquainted with gunmaking would be unable to grasp the meaning of half the matter. Again, there are many books written, not only on shooting, but on field sports of all kinds, which contain so little information as to be practically useless to the novice. In penning these few pages, therefore, we shall endeavour to place before the reader in as concise a manner as convenient a plain outline of the shot gun; its manipulation and necessary appendages; also shooting in all its branches - excepting with the rifle and pistol - together with a few comments concerning sporting dogs and ferrets, at the same time purposely omitting as much as possible technical terms and long-winded explanations. As this treatise is merely written for the benefit of beginners, we shall not enter into the multifarious details of gunmaking, barrel-boring, and all the intricacies of the various systems of gun-locks and breech actions now in use, as the tyro would probably find such both tedious and uninteresting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big Game Shooting is a book full of both fascinating tales and practical advice on a kind of hunting that has gone quite seriously out of fashion. This is both a collection of stories about hunting big game and an instructional on topics of interest to the avid marksman. The book is separated into chapters, of which Clive Phillipps-Wolley has authored four, with guest contributors responsible for the remaining sections. Chapters vary in terms of scope, with some examining a single breed of game and others more broadly discussing a topic of interest to the hunting community. Specific topics detailed including arctic hunting, the stag of the Alps, the Scandinavian elk, the large game of Spain and Portugal, and several others. The book transitions to a series of instructional chapters that focus on setting up camps and transportation, selecting rifles and ammunition, and hints on preservation and taxidermy. The title is concluded by a detailed appendix. Big Game Shooting is a work that will appeal to the hunting enthusiast. The first-hand accounts of hunting expeditions that form the largest section of the book are entertaining and educational. The instructional chapters can be read both practically and as a text illuminating the history of hunting practices. While Clive Phillipps-Wolley receives credit as the primary author, all of the included writers provide meaningful contributions to the work. While the practice of shooting big game is less than highly regarded among environmentally concious individuals much of this advice will also help those "hunting" with a camera. The tales of hunting expeditions are entertaining, and the advice provided practical. Big Game Shooting is a worthwhile read.
