Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Practical Obstetrics: Comprising Pregnancy, Labor, and the Puerpal State, and Obstetric Surgery The last decade has witnessed not alone progress in the practice of obstetrics, but also change in methods of instruction. The clinical teacher is no longer satisfied with grounding his students in the theory of the art, but he aims, as far as his opportunities will allow, to give his classes that practical instruction which alone enables them to follow understandingly the normal course of pregnancy and of labor, as also to recognize and to cope with the emergencies. The teaching of obstetrics, therefore, has very properly become more practical and less theoretical. This is the inevitable outcome of that higher medical education which aims at thorough grounding in every science before the student is deemed competent to undertake practice. Above all are such methods requisite in case of the science we are dealing with, since familiarity with the phenomena of pregnancy, and of labor, and of the puerperal state, as witnessed in the living and at the bedside, best fits the student for the great responsibilities of his chosen calling. Rarely, nowadays, is the student - filled with theory, and this alone - licensed to care for woman in labor. Practice on the manikin and study in the lying-in room have taught him that, however sound theory be, it cannot be made to uniformly fit the individual case, but that the course of action must alter with the concurrent circumstances. Before undertaking the study of obstetrics, the student should be well grounded in anatomy, physiology, embryology, and pathology, and therefore there is no longer call for the textbook of the present being filled with abstract of knowledge which can, to better advantage, be secured in works dealing specifically with such subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Obstetrics: A Practical Text-Book for Students and Practitioners The fact that many of the text-books now before the profession, although very valuable for reference, are too large for the undergraduate student, has long been appreciated by the author; hence in the following pages he has endeavored to cover the subject concisely and to eliminate unnecessary discussion. With this in view he has made no effort to present a complete bibliography of the subject, although references to important articles on most subjects are given. It will be noticed that the subjects of pelvimetry and the antepartum examination are included in Chapter V under the Management of Normal Pregnancy. The author maintains that for the proper management of a pregnancy the obstetrician should inform himself at the earliest opportunity as to both the exact size and shape of the pelvic canal, and should ascertain the presentation of the fetus. Book excerpt: By far the most influential work on the history of the body, across a wide range of academic disciplines, remains that of Thomas Laqueur. This book puts on trial the one-sex/two-sex model of Laqueur's Making Sex: Body and Gender from the Greeks to Freud through a detailed exploration of the ways in which two classical stories of sexual difference were told, retold and remade from the mid-sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Agnodike, the 'first midwife' who disguises herself as a man and then exposes herself to her potential patients, and Phaethousa, who grows a beard after her husband leaves her, are stories from the ancient world that resonated in the early modern period in particular. Tracing the reception of these tales shows how they provided continuity despite considerable change in medicine, being the common property of those on different sides of professional disputes about women's roles in both medicine and midwifery. The study reveals how different genres used these stories, changing their characters and plots, but always invoking the authority of the classics in discussions of sexual identity. The study raises important questions about the nature of medical knowledge, the relationship between texts and observation, and the understanding of sexual difference in the early modern world beyond the one-sex model.
