Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Lessons in Language The language lessons in this book are intended to cover the last two years of the primary course, and they arc graded to suit the capacity of pupils as they advance. The reviews under the head of "Things to Remember" indicate the divisions of the book into' the work for each half year. It will be noticed that the lessons are arranged under the two heads, "Things to Notice" and "Things to Do." Under the head of "Things to Notice" will be found development questions, and the deductions drawn from answers to such questions. Under the head of "Things to Do" the exercises are varied, and of such a nature as to interest the pupil. Indeed, the aim throughout the book is to lead the pupil to see and to think for himself. Every pupil should be provided with a book, to prevent the serious loss of time that must inevitably take place in getting the necessary exercises before the class in any other way. Besides, the memory is greatly aided by contact of the eye with the printed page. Only such thoughts as are clearly grasped by the mind can be intelligently expressed; therefore in preparing a composition exercise it should be the aim of the teacher to see that pupils clearly comprehend the thoughts they are about to express in their own language. Outlines for composition constitute a distinctive feature of the book. A pupil learns to express his thoughts correctly only in one way by much practice in expressing them orally and in writing. Expression is the soul of mental life. Clear ness and conciseness of expression are most surely attained through the use of the pen in the expression Of original thought. Frequent exercises in writing short compositions on familiar subjects from outlines is a valuable exercise, and should extend through the grammar grades. A pupil should never be required to write on a subject that he does not know something about. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. O Every lesson has been developed in actual teaching both by the author and by teachers under his supervision. The lessons come as the result of experiment under conditions varying from the un graded rural school to the most advanced graded schools. To provide for these varying conditions with a language series that is rich in content, well-organized, definite, yet exible, and at the same time practical and teachable, has been the great problem. The books are to some extent a composite of the best thought of teachers in many states. To all who have inspired, encouraged, and assisted him, the author desires to express his gratitude. Book excerpt: "Pure English" is a discourse on the proper use of English. The book opens with a preface in which the authors opine the sorry state of the language commonly seen in written works. The purpose of the work is thus to instruct readers on a variety of topics and to offer practical lessons for improving language skills. The first part of the text is dedicated to vocabulary, and functions as an abbreviated usage dictionary. Hackett and Alexander proceed to discuss eclectic grammar, a philosophy for the usage of rhetoric, faulty phrases, words of dual meaning, and several more topics. The short volume is concluded by a detailed index. The authors succeeded in creating a document that demonstrates their passion for the English language. These are grammar and vocabulary lessons designed to augment one's ability to successfully use words to convey a message. "Pure English" is a well-written and informative text that can be beneficial to anybody who values the proper use of language. "Pure English: A Treatise on Words and Phrases, or Practical Lessons in the Use of Language" is an excellent book and one that is deserving of wider readership. Hackett and Alexander have created an accessible and enjoyable volume that can serve to improve the writing of its readers, and for this reason, is a highly recommended work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Language and Grammar, Vol. 1 The series, of which this is the first book, has been prepared in the belief that the best training in the use of language is afforded by a coordination of language lessons and grammar. It is a mistake to require pupils to spend a few years upon language lessons, and then a few years upon grammar. The two subjects should be pursued as one study, and those parts that help each other most should be brought together every week in lessons and exercises. To study language as an art without knowing at the same time something of grammar as a science, is to follow a process purely empirical, and to deprive the teacher of a vocabulary with which to communicate his suggestions to the pupil. The study of grammar with out practice in expression is, for the young, dry and unfruitful. Its results at best are those of logic and not of rhetoric. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talking With the Pencil: Primary Lessons in Language In preparing this little book the author has endeavored to make the study of the right use of language in its written form pleasant and attractive to the youngest pupils. Mn? Has constantly had in mind the fact that children learn best by doing, and therefore he has made every lesson an exercise in the practical use of words. Beginning with the simple idea of a word as the name of something, the learner is led by easy steps to the acquisition of a knowledge of the first principles of English grammar. While this is being done he is also ao quiring the ability to write correctly - that is, to talk with the pencil properly and fluently. These lessons are sufficient for one year's work, and will prepare the pupil to take up and pursue with increased interest the study of language in its more complex relations. It contains a treatment of two main subjects Grammar, or the science of the sentence; and the elements of Composition, or the art of writing. In the part which treats of Grammar are included analysis and punctuation; in that which treats of Composition are included the conventional forms of epistolary, social, business, and parliamentary writing; and practice in the art of writing, for which abundant material is supplied by exercises in the selection and arrangement of words, in description, narration, reproduction, paraphrase, and essay-writing. These subjects are arranged, as in the first book, in the order in which the pupil can best study them, and not in the deductive order in which an adult might find most pleasure.
