Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Lessons on the Human Body: An Elementary Text-Book on Anatomy, Physiology, Hygiene, and the Effects of Stimulants and Narcotics on the Human System, Prepared for the Use of Intermediate and Grammar Schools This book is the result of several years' practical work in the class-room. It has been the practice of the author to teach the subject of Physiology topically, objectively, and with such Simple experiments as can be performed with inexpensive apparatus. The notes prepared for the use of pupils have been revised and extended from time to time, until they have grown into the substance of this little book. In its preparation a logical order has been Observed in the arrangement of subjects and in the sequence of topics, so that each lesson may be presented to the class orally and objectively before being assigned from the text. The sub jcet of each topic has been placed in the form of a question. Each question is a useful and interesting question, and deals with some important fact in regard to the structure or function of some of the organs of the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for Higher Grammar Grades Through this means one can best show the interdependence of plant and animal kingdoms, and the unity and harmony of nature. Attention is called to the experiments suggested and described in the text. The appliances and material suggested are readily procurable; and the experiments described may easily be performed by any bright and energetic teacher. Taught in this way physiology becomes a living and intensely interesting science. The problems given for solution by the pupils will tend to fix indelibly the hygienic principles involved in them. Especial attention is called to the lessons on Domestic Economy. This work has never failed to arouse the interest not only of the pupils, but of parents also, their feeling being that the school work in physiology is being made practical as life itself is and must be. This chapter and that on plant physiology is the work of Mrs. Winfield S. Hall. The author is indebted to Professor Wilson of Columbia University, to Professor Piersol of the University of Pennsylvania, and to Professor Williams of the University of Buffalo for several valuable figures. Acknowledgment is due also to Messrs. Lea Brothers, Philadelphia, for permission to reproduce several figures from the author's Text-book of Physiology, of which they are the publishers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Elementary Practical Physiology Ever since I began teaching Practical Physiology in University College, London, I have been in the habit of distributing among my students a syllabus to guide them in their work. By the introduction of fuller details what was at first a Syllabus has been changed into a Practical Course, which I now venture to publish in the hope that it may be found useful to others. I fear that its use will be much restricted by the fact that in it Histology and Physiology are closely combined instead of being separated into two or more distinct courses. Although, in practice at least, I stand alone, I believe, in this matter, continued experience makes me more and more convinced that the plan which I adopt is, though troublesome, the safest one. Histological work, unless it be salted with the salt either of physiological or of morphological ideas, is apt to degenerate into a learned trifling of the very worst description; and students are generally only too ready to spend far too much of their time in the fascinating drudgery of cutting sections and mounting stained specimens. In morphological questions the physiologist has but an indirect interest; and details of microscopic structure ought only to occupy his attention in so far as they serve as a basis for physiological deductions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Body and Health: An Elementary d104-Book of Essential Anatomy, Applied Physiology, and Practical Hygiene for Schools The most noted of England's prime ministers said, The first duty of the statesman is, the health of the people. One of our own statesmen asserts that the greatest asset of this nation is the health of its citizens. Inasmuch as recent science has shown clearly the cause and prevention of many diseases, it is important that this knowledge should form a part of every individual's equipment for the duties of life. The greatest enemies of the human race are microbes, which annually lay prostrate in this country and Europe seventy million people, of whom three million die. The microbes feeding on human blood have caused the destruction of armies and the downfall of a nation. On this account a knowledge of these infinitely small forms of life is of vast importance. Since the foundation of many diseases is laid during child hood, and since new ideas are accepted most readily in youth, every boy and girl during school years should be carefully and thoroughly instructed as to the cause of human wretched ness and the means of preventing it. The numerous text books on elementary physiology have largely neglected the discussion of facts relating to public health. As a result not one in a hundred graduates of our public schools could state any evidence showing whether vaccination is beneficial or harmful, or describe how malaria, diphtheria, and yellow fever are acquired, and how they may be prevented.
