Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Handbook for the Study of the Bible and of Bible Literature: Including Biblical Geography, Antiquties, Introduction to the Old and the New Testament, and Hermeneutics This book is offered to the English-speaking peoples as a small contribution towards the realization of the great and noble aims of the reigning Sovereign Pontiff, Pope Pius X. The heroic stand which he has made for the preservation of the Word of God, commands at once the sympathy and admiration of all the faithful. Just as in the realm of philosophy he has insisted on the true personality and dignity of man, and as in theology on the true transcendence and majesty of God, so also has he in the realm of biblical science insisted on the Divine Character of the Inspired Word. When the Church speaks officially through the Sacred Congregations, she does not argue with her children. She teaches them. She says, plainly, what is the truth concerning the Divine Revelation. Then, after the Church has spoken, the work of the theologians and critics begins. It is their office to justify the Word of the Church to men. Hence, the remark of those who say that their errors have been condemned, but not refuted, is pointless. The functions of condemnation and refutation are quite distinct, and pertain to different spheres of the Church's action. A translation of Dr. Seisenberger's work has been asked for, as providing a bird's-eye view of the biblical question from the Catholic standpoint, suitable to the exigencies of the present day. It is a handbook for the hard-worked parochial clergy. It is an introduction for the Seminary student. Yet, although it is merely a synopsis, it is enriched on every page with ample references to the more specialized works - a detailed list of which is appended to the book - so that the reader who wishes to pursue any given subject more deeply has the material at hand without further search.
