Book excerpt: Computer assisted exercises have developed over the last ten years into the most cost-effective method to perform collective headquarters training in NATO. Considerable advance has been made to support the concept of "train as you fight or operate" by achieving close integration between simulation environments and command and control information systems. Key factors for the success of CAXes are the selected simulation, the level of training and competence of exercise planners and support personnel and the ability to mediate effectively between simulation and CCIS used by the exercising headquarters. For operational level exercises, the Joint Theater Level Simulation was selected as the preferred exercise driver. Effective methods for exercise planner training and simulation data base development have been developed combining clearly defined organisational concepts and tools. The methods of training have been refined but remain manpower intensive. Exercise management has been addressed more recently and is showing great potential for effective formalisation and support. Based on current practice and technological investigations, future avenues that will contribute significantly to this field are simulation composability through interoperability, advanced distributed learning and highly flexible data collection and analysis.

This research compared training digital skills to entry-level, enlisted soldiers by the conventional method to training by a constructivist method The constructivist method actively engages soldiers by using realistic vignettes as training tools to acquire and integrate knowledge of the digital system and the military Job. After seven days of training, soldiers trained by both methods were asked to complete: (1) a practical exercise requiring application of their training in an unfamiliar vignette, and (2) the current schoolhouse exam. No difference was found between the conventional training methods and the constructivist method on the current schoolhouse exam. Soldiers trained using the constructivist method were more successful In applying their training to solve unfamiliar problems and reported lower levels of workload. The constructivist training method was shown to improve soldiers' adaptation and application of their training to unfamiliar situations."--DTIC.

In its current engagement-what has been identified as an "era of persistent conflict"- the nation's most important weapon is the dismounted soldier operating in small units. Today's soldier must be prepared to contend with both regular and irregular adversaries. Results in Iraq and Afghanistan show that, while the U.S. soldier is a formidable fighter, the contemporary suite of equipment and support does not afford the same high degree of overmatch capability exhibited by large weapons platforms-yet it is the soldier who ultimately will play the decisive role in restoring stability. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the need to retool the military decision making process (MDMP) as the U.S. Army transforms to the future force. Although the MDMP is the current doctrinal framework to decision making and planning at the tactical levels, it represents an analytical approach to problem solving with the concerted efforts of a commander and his staff. This monograph compares the current MDMP as an analytical process with the emerging science and theory of naturalistic decision making (NDM) as best represented by Dr. Gary Klein's Recognition Primed Decision Making (RPD) model for intuitive decision making. This monograph compares the two processes to determine which is a better model to use and recommends that a formal recognition of RPD elements and a commander's experience must be codified to present a better model for planning and decision making in the future force. A comparison of the requirements for battle command now and in the future is used to show the validity of any planning and decision making process that is codified by doctrine. Specifically, this monograph explains that any planning process must support a commander's need to visualize, describe, and direct actions against a hostile, thinking enemy. Also, any planning and decision making process must allow for synchronization and synergy of effects as the future force must be capable of rapid, decisive operations with a multitude of assets that make up its combat power. Flexibility must be resident in the process to account for future force operations across the spectrum of conflict as well as to provide a framework that is adaptable and modular. Lastly, any planning and decision making process for the future force must have some semblance of standardization to the process as the common language all organizations can train and execute.
