Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Dissections The Practical Dissections is not a Treatise on Anatomy, nor in any way a substitute for one. It is intended to be simply a practical guide in the ordinary dissections of the Medical Student, describing on the same page, and in connection, the muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, or other structures which are conjointly exposed, and only so far as exposed, in dissecting any one of the parts into which the dead subject is usually divided. Remembering that the smallness of the size of a book is always its own recommendation, as, on the contrary, the largeness of a book is its own disadvan tage, as well as the terror of learning, all Minute Anatomy, and the details of arterial'distribution, beyond what an ordinary injection exhibits, or of nervous rami fications which only special dissections can demonstrate, have purposely been omitted, or, if introduced, as has been done almost of necessity in a few places, are ao companied by the statement that their verification in an ordinary dissection is not to be expected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Practical Anatomy: For the Use of Dissectors In consequence of their actual plan not being suitable to the course of dissections, or from the partition of the subject among several students, causing the dissection of one person to interfere with that of another. The idea of forming a text-book to obviate the latter was thus suggested; and I trust, therefore, that the present treatise will, in most cases, be found to answer either where several students dissect together on the same subject, Or where the student dissects alone upon a por tion of the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Anatomy: A Manual of Dissections Somme for dissection are made of two principal shapes; in one, the edge is bevelled to the point, the back being straight; in the other, both back and edge are bevelled to a point midway between the two. The latter form is pre ferable' for most purposes. The blade should not be more than an inch and a half long, and never double-edged, but the material of which the handle is constructed is a matter of indifi'erenoe. For all ordinary dissection, it will be found most convenient to hold the scalpel like a pen; but for cleaning the fascia cd' muscles, and following out small nerves, it is better to hold it reserved, so that the back of the knife ma be against the tissue which is to be preserved. In making t e first incision through the skin of a limb, or in any other position where a long incision is required, the knife may, with advantage, be held under the hand, by which the wrist has more play, and the student has the opportunity of practising a mode of holding the knife, which he will find very useful when operating on the living body. The publishers have placed at our disposal the incomparable series of illustrations found in these two standard works. The student can, therefore, enjoy the advantage of having in the dissecting-room a full and detailed guide for his work, presenting to his eve the same pictures with which he is familiar in his study and class-room. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Anatomy and Manual of Practical Dissection: Together With the Anatomy of the Viscera; Prepared Especially for the Students of Medicine The author has endeavored in this little book to embody only those facts which have appeared to him to be really the essentials of anatomy; not that he considers it likely that the student will master every minute detail therein contained, but he believes that the knowledge gained by a study of this work will enable the future practitioner, during the remainder of his professional life, to recall such general impressions as will render intelligible current medical literature, or even the more elaborate monographs, and will at once suggest where to consult his anatomical text-books for such terms or facts as may have become indistinct through lapse of time. While this book cannot replace the larger anatomical works, sufficient descriptive matter has been introduced to enable the student to refresh his memory of the more numerous facts learnt in the lecture and dissecting room, or from his Gray or other text-book, differing in this respect from most of the works of its class, which are little more than a list of names, without any distinctive facts connected with them to aid the student in the difficult task of acquiring a knowledge of a branch of medical study almost solely dependent upon the unassisted powers of the memory. Conciseness, rather than elegance of diction, has been the aim, so that all words such as the articles a, an, the, have been omitted, except where absolutely necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Anatomy, Vol. 2 of 2: The Student's Dissecting Manual The dissectors Of the thorax cannot begin their work until the upper extremities have been removed, which seldom takes place until at least a fortnight after the dissection of the body has started. During this period they should study the sternum, ribs, and vertebrae, as well as the articulated thorax, with great care, and should realise how small a portion of the upper part of the trunk is occupied by the thorax in the living person. Let them measure an adult man across the Shoul ders; the breadth may be some eighteen inches, but of this only four inches represent the upper aperture of the thorax. The last having been for some time out of print, my Publishers have urgently requested me to prepare this edition, the completion of which has been unavoidably delayed by numer ous other avocations. Since the first appearance of this work numerous Manuals of Anatomy have been published in these as well as in other countries, some of which have been arranged very much after the same plan, others m a more systematic form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dissection Methods and Guides This book is intended to bridge the gap that exists between the descriptive text-book and the dissecting table. It is designed for use in conjunction with a text - book, but it is not to supplant it in any way. In order that it may be used in connection with any text - book or atlas, both the old and the new anatomical names have been given. If the instructions seem to be too minute, it should be remembered that the student's first effort may happen to be that very dissection; therefore nothing has been left to chance. Every thing that a student could reasonably be expected to do in any well-equipped dissecting room has been carefully explained. Some of the dissections are orig inal, and all of them have been carefully selected with a view to their being well within the capacity of the average student to perform. The real ability of a practising physician or surgeon must often depend on a true knowledge of human anatomy. Anatomy that has merely been memorized can only be of service in passing examinations. Such anatomy is speedily forgotten, and can never be of any real value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
