Book excerpt: To keep abreast with current developments in medicine, members of the health care team require a firm grasp of science to cope with changes in technology and understanding of the mechanisms of body function. This is in addition to developing a range of interpersonal and communication skills. There are sections covering biology, chemistry, physics, nutrition, biochemistry, medical microbiology and physiology. Highly illustrated, it includes over a hundred applications and examples to assist the reader in relating science to health care. Throughout, the text is divided into units containing a common theme, and each chapter contains a list of objectives and a summary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newcomer to the field of clinical chemistry is faced with the daunting prospect of understanding the ever increasing aspects of the subject: new techniques, tests, terminology, methods of diagnosing diseases and other advances which relate to clinical chemistry. The aim of this book is to provide basic information regarding all branches of the subject which the trainee will need to understand. The book should also provide a basis for answering many of the examination questions of clinical chemistry. It is therefore hoped that this book will prove useful to any person starting a career in clinical chemistry, be that person a laboratory scientific officer, graduate or trainee pathologist. Wherever possible, suggestions for further reading are given. Many subjects are so broad however that the reader is referred to the general list of analytical and clinical textbooks supplied at the end of the book. My grateful thanks are extended to the three ladies who typed this manuscript: Christine Cliffe, Margaret Donnelly and Judith Hardy. I would like to thank Dr Brian Wisdom of Queens University, Belfast for his suggestions on the entry "Enzyme-immunoassay". Finally my thanks go to Mr Martin Lister of MTP Press for his help and encouragement in this venture. W. H. Book excerpt: Scientific Foundations of Biochemistry in Clinical Practice, Second Edition describes the pathological aspects of general metabolic disorders. This book is organized into 10 sections encompassing 45 chapters that discuss the nature of disorders involving disturbance in hydrogen ion concentration and blood gases, as well as the disorders of fluid and electrolyte balance. Some of the topics covered in the book are the chemical analysis of urine; neonatal screening for biochemical disorders; clinical biochemistry of alcohol, in intensive and postoperative care; psychiatric disorders of biochemical origin; abnormalities of the plasma proteins; assessment of gastrointestinal function; and calcium metabolism. Other chapters examine the nature, conditions, and diagnosis of bone disorders. A chapter emphasizes the functions of hypothalamus and pituitary. Another chapter looks into the biochemistry and toxicology of metals. The final chapters are devoted to the classification of connective tissue diseases and to the examination of clinical biochemistry of the central nervous system. The book can provide useful information to doctors, biochemists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: This book brings together information currently scattered throughout the medical and scientific literature about non-pathological changes in the concentration of blood constituents. The author discusses these variations, which may be statistical, methodological, physiological, age-related, alcohol-related, or due to smoking or drug use. These are important variations and must be taken into account by clinicians when interpreting laboratory results. The handbook offers a quantitative account of variation in the concentration of blood constituents with recommendations for international units of measurement, reference interval determination, and selection of reference subjects. This helpful guide includes more than 1,500 references covering the whole period of development of clinical chemistry, and provides an important historical perspective. Previously unpublished results from the author's laboratory are also included for healthy subjects of different sex and age, as well as the distribution of serum bilirubin obtained from over 3,000 hospital staff members.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first demonstration of the existence of a vitamin and the full recognition of this fact are often attributed to the work of McCollum, who found that a sub stance in butterfat and cod-liver oil was necessary for growth and health of ani mals fed purified diets. It became obvious that an organic substance present in microconcentrations was vital to growth and reproduction of animals. Following the coining of the word vitamine by Funk, McCollum named this fat-soluble sub stance vitamin A. We can, therefore, state that vitamin A was certainly one of the first known vitamins, yet its function and the function of the other fat-soluble vitamins had remained largely unknown until recent years. However, there has been an explosion of investigation and new information in this field, which had remained quiescent for at least two or three decades. It is now obvious that the fat-soluble vitamins function quite differently from their water-soluble counter parts. We have learned that vitamin D functions by virtue of its being converted in the kidney to a hormone that functions to regulate calcium and phosphorus metabolism. This new endocrine system is in the process of being elucidated in detail, and in addition, the medical use of these hormonal forms of vitamin D in the treatment of a variety of metabolic bone diseases has excited the medical com munity.
