Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Bank Operation, Vol. 1 of 2 In developing this larger project it was seen that unity would be attained only by employing an editor to devote his whole time to collecting the available material and to pre paring the book. Accordingly a man was obtained who was left largely to his own devices in preparing the projected book. The result, while an excellent product, stressed banking history and theory rather than exposition of actual bank operations. A revision of the entire plan of procedure was therefore determined upon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Banking Practice For a long time past there has been an apparent need for a treatise on practical banking that would give a complete summary of the operation of a bank in such form as could be used as a text for teaching. While many excellent works have heretofore been written on both the theory and practice of banking, no one work has in itself adequately covered the subject, making necessary the use of several books in order to supply such information as the student requires. More over, no other work has attempted to weave into banking practice the Negotiable Instruments Law, so essential to bank operation. It has therefore been the aim to present a simple, yet comprehensive picture of the Work of a bank in every detail. The author wishes to make special acknowledgement to that splendid work recently issued by the National City Bank under the title Practical Bank Operation, from which many valuable suggestions have been Obtained as to the conduct of a large institution. Supplementing his own experiences and observations with such informa tion, he has attempted to present a composite picture of banking practice as it is now conducted under recognized American procedure. Credit is also due to the Irving National Bank of New York for the use of its forms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methods and Machinery of Practical Banking A Valuable d104-Book must be written by one who is a conscientious student of the subject treated, and who has himself had practical experience of the requirements of the school where his book is to be used as a guide. He must also have the faculty of expression, the ability to make his meaning clear and easily understood. As a rule, bankers are men of affairs; they drive ahead in the path of daily work and worry, and let others write books. Mr. Claudius B. Patten, the author of this volume, was a born banker. He loved his profession and sought continually to formulate better and safer methods in the transaction of the banking business. He realized that a good business man is never too old or too smart to learn. The judgment of the officer or clerk who claimed to "know it all" he regarded with a just distrust. The knowledge he had himself acquired he was always willing to impart to others. Selfishness had no place in his nature, and he was opposed to taking out a patent on a new idea and putting it under lock and key in his own bank. It will be a hopeful sign when bank managers can look beyond the confines of their own counting-rooms and cultivate a spirit of fraternity and helpfulness toward others engaged in the same business. A well-managed bank to-day is a cog in the great wheel of business activity; if its management is selfish and narrow, without the appropriate adaptation to the other cogs necessary to maintain the symmetry of the wheel, it causes a grating and wearing of the spindle, and so increases its own chances of being removed for repairs. Born in Kingston, New Hampshire, April 7, 1828, Mr. Patten was of a highly respected family. When a young man he went to Boston and readily secured employment, at once making himself noticeably useful to his employers. His manners and habits were such that he rapidly made friends, through whose influence he eventually secured the position of junior clerk in the Suffolk Bank. He remained with that institution for nearly twenty years, steadily rising to the position of Assistant Cashier. This he held until 1867, when he resigned to become Cashier of the State National Bank of Boston. Mr. Patten was enthusiastic in regard to the business of banking and carefully educated himself in all its branches. The former is the account upon which the customer Operates by drawing cheques according to his needs. Unless the balance standing to the credit of the customer falls below a fixed minimum it is not the general practice for a banker to make any charge for the accommodation granted. The latter is the account upon which the customer Cannot Operate except upon the terms agreed between himself and the banker. The money deposited is only obtainable after proper notice. Upon this money the banker pays interest to the customer, the amount of the interest being calculated according to circumstances. There is no fixed custom amongst bankers as to deposit accounts. AS already stated, the business Of discounting bills of exchange and promissory notes will be fully explained in a future chapter, and the whole question Of loans granted by bankers will be treated in detail in a chapter specially devoted to that subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Work of a Bank: A Treatise on Practical Banking Which Aims to Show the Fundamental Principles of Money; The Practical Work of a Bank in Detail, and Particularly Credit in Its Relation to Banking Operations While the technique of banking has not undergone any decided de parture from established principles, the machinery of banking has, how ever, gone through a process of evolution, as the increasing demands of the business world have made shorter and quicker methods necessary in order to cope with the added volume of work without unduly increasing the cost. The adding machine and the adding typewriter, particularly, have come into play as time and labor savers of the highest usefulness, without which the labor cost of banking would be much greater than the profits would warrant. Nevertheless, there would seem to be room for a new work on practical banking, dealing with the subject in a form different from any which have heretofore appeared; and this work is in no way intend ed to supplant, but rather to supplement, those which have gone before, whose excellence will for many years be recognized.
