Book Synopsis Understanding an Atheist by : Kevin Davis
Download or read book Understanding an Atheist written by Kevin Davis and published by Secularvoices Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows an atheist. You may not know it, but you do. Many atheists are closeted because of the social and familial stigma that comes with being an open atheist in a society full of religious believers. Often referred to as the fastest growing demographic in America, those with no religious affiliation make up about 10-15% of the US population. That means it's likely that 1 out of every 10 people you know either doesn't subscribe to an organized religion or doesn't believe in a supreme being at all. Understanding an Atheist is a book written by Kevin Davis, head writer at SecularVoices.org, a popular blog on the Patheos network. This book was written for anyone who knows a nonbeliever, whether they're open about their beliefs or not. In it, Kevin takes you through his own experiences, raised Catholic, once devout Christian, then closeted atheist, now openly a nonbeliever and active in the atheist/secular community. Through this journey, readers will gain an understanding of what it's like for someone to abandon faith in the supernatural and gravitate toward evidence-based reasoning, ultimately facing the taboo of being a nonbeliever. The purpose of this book is not to tear down religion or the religious, but to answer questions that believers may not yet be comfortable asking their atheist loved ones. Understanding an Atheist will provide some insight into how the mind of an atheist operates, what they stand for, what prejudices they face, and how they feel, surrounded by religion every day.
Book Synopsis Systematic Atheology by : John R. Shook
Download or read book Systematic Atheology written by John R. Shook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atheology is the intellectual effort to understand atheism, defend the reasonableness of unbelief, and support nonbelievers in their encounters with religion. This book presents a historical overview of the development of atheology from ancient thought to the present day. It offers in-depth examinations of four distinctive schools of atheological thought: rationalist atheology, scientific atheology, moral atheology, and civic atheology. John R. Shook shows how a familiarity with atheology’s complex histories, forms, and strategies illuminates the contentious features of today’s atheist and secularist movements, which are just as capable of contesting each other as opposing religion. The result is a book that provides a disciplined and philosophically rigorous examination of atheism’s intellectual strategies for reasoning with theology. Systematic Atheology is an important contribution to the philosophy of religion, religious studies, secular studies, and the sociology and psychology of nonreligion.

If you have a friend or family member who is an atheist you might have thought, Is it ok to pray at meals when they're over for dinner? Why do they hate God? What do they think happens when we die? Should I bring up their atheism in conversation or just ignore it? Why don't they just go to church 'just in case'? "Understanding an Atheist"will attempt to answer these questions for you, by giving you some insight into how the mind of an atheist operates, what they stand for, what prejudices they face, and how they feel, surrounded by religion every day.

Book Synopsis Hope in the Dark by : Craig Groeschel
Download or read book Hope in the Dark written by Craig Groeschel and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can God be good when life is not? Rediscover faith in the character, power, and presence of God. Even in the questions. Even in the hurt. "I want to believe, I want to have hope, but . . ." Pastor and bestselling author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it's the hurt that shouts the loudest. In Hope in the Dark, Groeschel explores the story of the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus, saying, "I believe! Help my unbelief!" In the man's sincere plea, Jesus heard the tension in the man's battle-scarred heart. He healed not only the boy but the father too, driving out the hopelessness that had overtaken him. He can do the same for us today. As Groeschel shares his pain surrounding the health challenges of his daughter, he acknowledges the questions we may ask in our own deepest pain: "Where was God when I was being abused?" "Why was my child born with a disability?" "Why did the cancer come back?" "Why are all my friends married and I'm alone?" He invites us to wrestle with such questions as we ask God to honor our faith and heal our unbelief. Because in the middle of your profound pain, you long for authentic words of understanding and hope. You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good. Hope in the Dark is also available in Spanish, Esperanza en la Oscuridad.
Book Synopsis Practical Atheist by : Phillip Duttry
Download or read book Practical Atheist written by Phillip Duttry and published by Ichthus Publications. This book was released on 2022-11-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 6, Phillip found himself repeating the words of the pastor at Vacation Bible School. Unsure exactly of what he had just did, he was quickly ushered into the waters of baptism. Still uncertain of the significance of the Gospel, the Atonement, and the work of Christ on the Cross-all beliefs he purportedly confessed-Phillip began to ask questions about these teachings as he grew into a teenager. Still holding to the assurance of "once saved, always saved," he began to turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with the struggles of life. Though professing Christ, the life he lived reflected a man who denied Christ's authority over his life. In Practical Atheist, Phillip uses his life experience and the path that he took to examine the dangers of easy-believism in the Church and the importance of having a solid grasp on the implications of one's theology. By looking at the implications of the "sinners prayer" and "asking Jesus into your heart," coupled with an incorrect understanding of "once saved, always saved," Phillip provides a clear and concise case for the biblical Gospel and hope for future glory.

Book Synopsis The Meaning of Belief by : Tim Crane
Download or read book The Meaning of Belief written by Tim Crane and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] lucid and thoughtful book... In a spirit of reconciliation, Crane proposes to paint a more accurate picture of religion for his fellow unbelievers.” —James Ryerson, New York Times Book Review Contemporary debate about religion seems to be going nowhere. Atheists persist with their arguments, many plausible and some unanswerable, but these make no impact on religious believers. Defenders of religion find atheists equally unwilling to cede ground. The Meaning of Belief offers a way out of this stalemate. An atheist himself, Tim Crane writes that there is a fundamental flaw with most atheists’ basic approach: religion is not what they think it is. Atheists tend to treat religion as a kind of primitive cosmology, as the sort of explanation of the universe that science offers. They conclude that religious believers are irrational, superstitious, and bigoted. But this view of religion is almost entirely inaccurate. Crane offers an alternative account based on two ideas. The first is the idea of a religious impulse: the sense people have of something transcending the world of ordinary experience, even if it cannot be explicitly articulated. The second is the idea of identification: the fact that religion involves belonging to a specific social group and participating in practices that reinforce the bonds of belonging. Once these ideas are properly understood, the inadequacy of atheists’ conventional conception of religion emerges. The Meaning of Belief does not assess the truth or falsehood of religion. Rather, it looks at the meaning of religious belief and offers a way of understanding it that both makes sense of current debate and also suggests what more intellectually responsible and practically effective attitudes atheists might take to the phenomenon of religion.
