Book excerpt: A simple integral formulation is given for the radio wave power propagating between the curved earth and the ionosphere for the case of low frequency transmitters on the surface of the earth. By making assumptions about the vertical field profiles, the field strengths at arbitrary distances and altitudes can be estimated. Field strength versus distance predictions are compared with published mode and wave-hop calculations and with experimental data.

Book excerpt: Prosumers, such as energy storage, smart home, and microgrids, are the consumers who also produce and share surplus energy with other users. With capabilities of flexibly managing the generation, storage and consumption of energy in a simultaneous manner, prosumers can help improve the operation efficiency of smart grid. Due to the rapid expansion of prosumer clusters, the planning and operation issues of prosumer energy systems have been increasingly raised. Aspects including energy infrastructure design, energy management, system stability, etc., are urgently required to be addressed while taking full advantage of prosumers' capabilities. However, up to date, the research on prosumers has not drawn sufficient attention. This proposal presents the need to introduce a Research Topic on prosumer energy systems in Frontiers in Energy Research. We believe this Research Topic can promote the research on advanced planning and operation technologies of prosumer energy systems and contribute to the carbon neutrality for a sustainable society.

Book excerpt: This work includes numerical analysis of discontinuities in acoustic wave-guide and their properties in multi-mode case. It was suggested new version of reciprocity relations between wave-guide modes: between incident and transmitted and between incident and reflected modes. This new version of reciprocity relations transforms into old one in a case of single traveling mode.

This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the author develops new high-power millimeter wave techniques for measuring the hyperfine structure of positronium (Ps-HFS) directly for the first time in the world. Indirect measurement of Ps-HFS in the literature might have systematic uncertainties related to the use of a static magnetic field. Development of the millimeter wave devices supports the precise determination of Ps-HFS by directly measuring the Breit-Wigner resonant transition from o-Ps to p-Ps without the magnetic field. At the same time, the width of the measured Breit-Wigner resonance directly provides the lifetime of p-Ps. This measurement is the first precise spectroscopic experiment involving the magnetic dipole transition and high-power millimeter waves. The development of a gyrotron and a Fabry-Pérot cavity is described as providing an effective power of over 20 kW, which is required to cause the direct transition from o-Ps to p-Ps. Those values measured by the newly developed millimeter wave device pave the way for examining the discrepancy observed between conventional indirect experiments on Ps-HFS and the theoretical predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, very little practical information or training has been available for engineers, technicians and students in the area of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems at ultra high frequencies (UHF) and super high frequencies (SHF). Here, Dominique Paret offers you a complete guide to the theory, components, practical application areas and standards in RFID at UHF and SHF. He achieves an expert balance between theory and technology, finance and other aspects, providing a clear view of the entire field. This book deals with the real aspects of contactless applications in detail, and divided into five parts, covers: Basic principles, general considerations and the market, defining all essential terms and the different tags and applications. Wave propagation principles and theory. Communication and transmission, baseband signals, carrier modulation and interactions, discussing communication modes between the base station and tag, and energy transfer modes. International safety standards and regulations, including International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) models, and methods for evaluating commercial tags. Components for tags and base stations. This comprehensive reference is ideal for computer and electronics engineers working on the design and development of RFID systems for the electronics industry, as well as for those in other industries such as automotive, security and transport, who want to implement RFID into their business. Dominique Paret’s book is also a solid and thorough technical introduction to the subject for graduate level students and researchers in electronics and industrial engineering design.
