Data concerning the structure of the turbulent zones inside and in the vicinity of Cb clouds are given according to the materials of special flight studies, as are the energy spectra of the vertical turbulent gusts of wind inside, below, and above the Cb clouds. The statistical characteristics of the disturbed motion of an aircraft in turbulent zones linked with Cb clouds are investigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The average rate at which the radar signal crosses a voltage level is linearly dependent on the root mean square of the turbulent wind component in the direction of the beam (1, 2), and therefore constitutes an anemometer with these characteristics. All tracers within the illuminated volume contribute to the signal. This anemometer therefore senses an average over the space they occupy which is at most equivalent to a cylinder standing half a pulse length high and straddling a diameter equal to the product of the range and beamwidth.
Book Synopsis Dynamic Response of Airplanes to Atmospheric Turbulence Including Flight Data on Input and Response by : John C. Houbolt

This book was released on 1964 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coordinated account of flight measurements of random atmospheric turbulence, of calculated and experimentally determined airplane transfer functions, and of analytical procedures for determining output responses is given based on power spectral techniques. Implications of these techniques for load prediction and for design are discussed, and brief review of basic procedures and mathematics involved is also included.

Download or read book The Power Spectral Analysis of Concurrent Airplane and Tower Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence written by U. OSCAR. LAPPE and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The joint tower-airplane experiment was designed to provide concurrent turbulence data for one flight level (at or near tower height) and at the same time to supplement these data with airplane measurements above, and tower measurements below, the tower height. Three tower locations were incorporated in this experiment in an attempt to determine the effects of diffn be simply related to turbulence measured at a fixed point as a function of time, (2) Obtain data for examining low level temporal and spatial homogeneity, (3) Investigate the influence of terrain variations on the turbulence power spectral densitrent topographical conditions on the turbulence spectrum. The 4 principal objectives were: (1) Obtain data to test the hypothesis of G.I. Taylor (1937) that turbulence encountered along a path in space aligned with the mean wind can be simply related to turbulence measured at a fixed point as a function of time, (2) Obtain data for examining low level temporal and spatial homogeneity, (3) Investigate the influence of terrain variations on the turbulence power spectral densities, and (4) Investigate the variation of turbulence characteristics with height above ground. Book Synopsis Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence Over a Wide Range of Wavelength for One Meteorological Condition by : Harold L. Crane
Download or read book Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence Over a Wide Range of Wavelength for One Meteorological Condition written by Harold L. Crane and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for obtaining a power spectrum of gust vertical velocity over a wide range of wavelength from simultaneous measurements made in flight has been devised and applied. This method has the advantage of not involvhg the use of airplane transfer functions. A gust vertical velocity spectrum was determined for one meteorological condition for wavelengths from 10 feet to 60,000 feet. The test was conducted at low altitude in clear- turbulence having a root-mean-square intensity of 5 feet per second. At the higher frequencies (shorterwavelengths), the power spectral density varied at a rate which was between the -5/3 power which has been predicted theoretically and the inverse square of the frequency. The spectrum which was obtained tended to flatten out for the longest test wavelengths. The break frequency which provides an indication of the scale of the turbulence occurred at a wavelength of approximately 6,000 feet. The results obtained indicate that the method of obtaining spectra used in this investigation is practicable.

Book Synopsis Turbulence Measurements at Lower Levels Around a Squall Line by : G. K. Mather
Download or read book Turbulence Measurements at Lower Levels Around a Squall Line written by G. K. Mather and published by 1969.. This book was released on 1969 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NAE T-33 was operated out of Tinker Air Force Base from April 22 to May 10, 1968 on a co-operative program of storm turbulence measurement. Control of the aircraft was exercised from the National Severe Storms Laboratories at Norman, Oklahoma. The object of the program was to explore turbulence intensities around thunderstorms and through radar 'gaps' in squall lines between 5,000 and 15,000 feet. On May 7, a squall line southeast of Oklahoma City was investigated, the T-33 being directed through essentially echo-free holes in the line. Moderate to severe turbulence was encountered in these gaps. Time histories and power spectra of the turbulence are presented and some conclusions are drawn as to the implication of the results to airline operations at these lower heights in severe storm situations.
