Book excerpt: There's no lack of people out there telling you to find your passion and dream big. But why does it seem like when we try, we so often end up more lost and overwhelmed than when we started? Liz Forkin Bohannon wants you to rethink everything you've been told about finding your passion and following your dreams. Why? Hate to break it to you, but you're likely never going to "find your passion." Because your passion and purpose are something you build--actively--day by day. In her signature tell-it-like-it-is fashion, Liz shares 14 actionable principles that will teach you how to do just that. With total transparency, Liz shares hilarious and heartbreaking stories of her journey of screwups and successes that illustrate the mindsets and principles that will give you a jolt of energy, inspiration, and direction toward your True North. By embracing your Inner Beginner, dreaming small, choosing curiosity over criticism, and so much more, Liz's story and the principles of Beginner's Pluck will have you on your way to building a life of purpose, passion, and lasting impact. Ready to rise to the occasion? It's time to make this life everything you want it to be. ****** "Brave, practical, and true, Liz shares her magical journey for anyone brave enough (and generous enough) to want to go on the journey of a lifetime."--Seth Godin "I met Liz more than a decade ago in Gulu, Uganda. Beginner's Pluck is a thoughtful book about what Liz has been strategically doing in the world, not merely optimistically hoping for. Her authentic voice is one I trust because I've seen what she's done. As you flip these pages, you won't want to be more like Liz. Instead, you'll want to figure out what your next steps are to release your passions, hopes, and love into a world which is in desperate need of someone just like you to engage it."--Bob Goff, hon. consul for the Republic of Uganda and author New York Times bestsellers Love Does and Everybody Always "I am SO VERY GLAD this book exists. We have long needed Liz's expert voice speaking into the minds of dreamers and doers, the ones who have the ideas and want to execute, and the ones who are exhaustedly executing. We want purpose in our day, and Liz does it with her life and teaches it here."--Annie F. Downs, bestselling author of 100 Days to Brave and Remember God

Book excerpt: Let me take you back in time to simpler days when my fourth great-grandfather ran around with Daniel Boone. Some of your stereotypes may be challenged when I describe an orphaned Indian boy brought to my fifth great-grandfather by Chief Logan at the boys request so that he could be raised by whites in order to become a minister of the gospel. You will learn much about early 1900s farm life. My wifes stepfather was from the mining country in the Idaho panhandle, so I will take you deep down below the surface looking for the ore body. Some of my relatives worked in the open-pit iron mines of northern Minnesota, so they will get some attention. After we had moved to California, we eventually bought a small house on a large enough lot to have a few chickens. When Mom wanted to have fried chicken ready for supper when Dad got home, it was up to me to chop its head off and, with Moms help, pluck it. Thus I learned that someone has to pluck the chicken, and I grew up with a respect for the country work ethic and the ingenuity of the American farmer. My exposure to the diverse cultures of Minnesota farmland and suburban California presented me with a view of the winds of cultural change blowing across the country, which were bringing a demand for lowering standards of behavior and the lessening of punishment. My comments on the source and susceptibility to the push for change are accompanied by anecdotes from history, and the lives of relatives and my own life experiences. I was in the Deep South during the Reverend Kings marches for civil rights. When the antiwar crowd was breaking windows on the first floor of the chancellors office at UC Berkeley, I was on the second floor servicing a mimeograph machine. The time I spent on high school and grade school campuses opened my eyes to the flow of changing standards in our culture. There will be an effort to describe the pivotal changes in my life and destiny, which I believe came about as the result of prayer, the importance of the Southern Baptist Church in my teenage years, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as I became an independent adult. I will also describe the events that led to my leaving the LDS church for twenty-five years and why I came back recently. The challenges of raising a family in a home divided on religious belief will also be covered. On the job, I dared to stand up for the rights of those I supervised to take their breaks. At another company I worked for, I took a stand against corporate greed. It cost me in promotions and raises and eventually resulted in AmeriGas refusing to recognize the Americans with Disabilities Act for me. Rather than sue them, I decided to leave with a two-year disability and have the California Department of Rehabilitation upgrade my clerical skills so I could get a desk job. The promoters of compassion in this country have succeeded in creating so many categories of disability that it was nearly impossible for this middle-aged white guy to get an entry-level desk job with the State of California. The worsening of my disability and my efforts to overcome it with alternative therapies will be covered in my chapter on health. Its just as well that I wanted to work in spite of my disability. My two-year disability policy required me to apply for a Social Security disability (SSI), so I went to be examined by their doctor. When I walked into the crowded waiting room, I was ushered right in to see the doctor. He explained that the people in the waiting room had to wait for an interpreter, so for that reason alone, they would qualify for SSI. Since I was able to walk in, I would not qualify. I believe in climate change, but it was around long before humankind was here to influence the weather. Over a century ago, at least one scientist determined through an experiment that the concentration of CO2 was already past the point where adding more would increase global warming. The global w

THE HOSTAGE Deborah Sinclair is a beautiful, accomplished young heiress with a staggering dowry, but her fortune does her no good when, one horrible night, Chicago is engulfed in flames. Tom Silver will walk through fire to avenge a terrible injustice—and he may have to. THE MISTRESS Kathleen O’Leary is a penniless maid, but tonight she takes a risk and masquerades as a glamorous heiress, thanks to a borrowed gown and her friends’ sense of adventure. To her surprise, the ruse succeeds—even Dylan Kennedy, Chicago’s most eligible bachelor, seems enraptured. But like Kathleen, Dylan isn’t who he says he is…. THE FIREBRAND During her escape from the flames engulfing Chicago, Lucy Hathaway rescued an orphaned baby from a burning hotel. Five years later, Lucy walks into Rand Higgins’s bank and knows: the child she saved actually belongs to this ruthless financier. Now, to keep the child she’s come to love, she’ll have to give up her hard-won freedom and become his wife.

The victims were turned into the Halloween costumes they were wearing at the time the hex struck. The poor souls were torn from their normal lives and were drawn to Nox to become the batteries that powered the magical City of Night. Factions have been scheming in the Vampire, Fae, Shifter and Demon Districts since the very beginning of the city’s creation. Many of the rebels have been eradicated by the Immortal Triumvirate’s assassins, but they couldn’t wipe them all out. Xiara Evora, the Guardian of Nox, has also killed some of their foes with the aid of her trusty staff, Wrath. The rebels have formed their own triumvirate. They plan to challenge their enemies during the upcoming party to celebrate the city’s fiftieth anniversary. Sebastian, Kade and Raum aren’t the only ones who have formed a union. Onvier, Azazel and Nilanthy have also become bound. A trio of trinities are all vying for rulership of the City of Night. Crowmon has evolved from a trickster god into something far darker and infinitely more dangerous. He’s determined to rule the city and to subjugate everyone to his will. War is coming to Nox. The fate of the entire population and the city itself will soon hang in the balance.

It shows the very purpose of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the signpost by which all can know if they themselves are walking into all truth. Filled with historical information from the period between the prophets and the gospel, which sets the table that Yehoshva of Nazareth sat at in his discorses with the religious establishment of those days. It shows where Paul fits into all this, by the many ancient prophecies spoken of concerning his role in those times and our times as well.

Book excerpt: There is a common but often unspoken arrogance on the part of outside observers that folk science and traditional knowledge—the type developed by Native communities and tribal groups—is inferior to the “formal science” practiced by Westerners. In this lucidly written and humanistic account of the O’odham tribes of Arizona and Northwest Mexico, ethnobiologist Amadeo M. Rea exposes the limitations of this assumption by exploring the rich ornithology that these tribes have generated about the birds that are native to their region. He shows how these peoples’ observational knowledge provides insights into the behaviors, mating habits, migratory patterns, and distribution of local bird species, and he uncovers the various ways that this knowledge is incorporated into the communities’ traditions and esoteric belief systems. Drawing on more than four decades of field and textual research along with hundreds of interviews with tribe members, Rea identifies how birds are incorporated, both symbolically and practically, into Piman legends, songs, art, religion, and ceremonies. Through highly detailed descriptions and accounts loaded with Native voice, this book is the definitive study of folk ornithology. It also provides valuable data for scholars of linguistics and North American Native studies, and it makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how humans make sense of their world. It will be of interest to historians of science, anthropologists, and scholars of indigenous cultures and folk taxonomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1895 and the world is in turmoil. The Great Powers compete for resources and the latest technology, and an undeclared and secret war rages between them all. This is battleground of the Adventuring Companies. These clandestine agents of the Great Powers operate in the shadows, matching skills and wits in pursuit of the newest scientific formulae or powerful occult artifacts. In Her Majesty's Name sets these adventuring companies against each other in one-off encounters and in longer narrative campaigns. Companies are usually comprised of just 4–15 figures and two players could easily play three games in an evening, making an on-going campaign a highly viable option. In Her Majesty's Name has been designed to allow maximum versatility for the player – if you can imagine it, the system will help you build it. There is, however, a wealth of material provided in the book, covering weird science, mystical powers, and a range of pre-generated adventuring companies, including the British Explorers' Club, the Prussian Society of Thule, the US Marine Corps, the Légion Étrangère, the revolutionaries of the Brick Lane Commune, ancient Egyptian cults, and the mysterious Black Dragon Tong.
