Si féconds qu'aient été en leur temps ces travaux, ils laissaient sans réponse les questions que pose toute oeuvre d'art: l'effet de captation qu'elle produit, les affects et les identifications qu'elle suscite, le dévoilement du réel qu'elle opère. Pour saisir de tels effets, on doit interroger moins le produit fini que l'expérience et le processus d'où résulte ce produit. Tout comme le rêve suppose un "travail", non visible, tout comme l'épreuve de la perte engage un douloureux "travail de deuil", l'oeuvre d'art et de pensée est tout entière traversée par un travail créateur. Bien plus, son originalité et son pouvoir sur nous tiennent à ce qu'elle figure ce travail dans sa forme et dans son style. Le corps de l'oeuvre - et non le seul texte - est l'oeuvre elle-même. Trois parties dans cet ouvrage. D'abord, une clinique et une théorie du travail créateur, où le cas de Freud est pris pour paradigme. Ensuite une analyse, menée à partir du Cimetière marin, "poème de la création du poème", qui permet à l'auteur d'y différencier cinq phases: l'état de saisissement, l'appréhension d'un représentant psychique inconscient, sa transformation en code organisateur, la donation d'un corps à ce code, l'affrontement imaginaire puis réel à un publie. Enfin, venant préciser et affiner le modèle théorique, quelques monographies: sur une nouvelle d'Henry James et le dédoublement, sur les contes et codes de Borges, sur la détresse et les toiles de Francis Bacon, sur les romans de Robbe-Grillet et les techniques de la pensée obsessionnelle. Autant de lectures psychanalytiques qui nous font effectuer un aller et retour entre l'opacité de la création et la complexité de l'intelligible. Une "poétique" psychanalytique serait donc possible ?
