Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make Pottery AN art like pottery-making, which is nearly as old as the human race, is naturally approached with some degree of reverence. One thinks of its old masters in various lands and ages - how they were content to spend a lifetime in the study and practice of it. There is, however, another thought that comes to mind - that this art, like every other, had to have its beginning. Moreover, every potter, from the primitive man who first realised that clay which held water could be moulded into portable vessels for a like purpose, to the artist potter of to-day, has learned the first steps of the craft. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... a potter and a keen business man, and England and the world owe him a deep debt of gratitude, but the claims of those who preceded him cannot in all fairness be overlooked. Wedgwood married a distant connection, Sarah Wedgwood, in 1764. Four years later his leg had to be amputated, and henceforth he stumped through life on a wooden leg. His eyesight, too, troubled him greatly, and the tender ministrations and loving care of his wife form a beautiful chapter in their history. He died January 3, 1795, aged 65. A few years previously he had admitted into partnership his three sons, John, Josiah and Thomas, and his nephew, Byerly, under the style of Josiah Wedgwood Sons & Byerly. The management was assumed by the latter and continued to his death in 1810. In 1823 the third Josiah Wedgwood entered the firm, to be joined by his brother Francis in 1827, and the firm name was changed to Josiah Wedgwood & Sons. John Boyle, one time partner with Herbert Minton, and Robert Brown, were both partners for a limited term of years. Later the firm consisted of Godfrey, Clement and Lawrence Wedgwood--Clement died in 1889 and Godfrey in 1908. The firm now consists of Lawrence, Cecil, son of Godfrey, and Francis Hamilton, son of Clement. In 1858 Messrs. Wedgwood were fortunate enough to secure the services of M. Emile Lessore, an artist who at the Royal Sevres Works had attempted to introduce a more artistic style of decoration than then existed. This caused so much dissention and jealousy among the artists that in 1858 he went to England and entered the service of Mintons, but soon removed to the Wedgwood pottery. His work was and is highly appreciated and sought after by connoisseurs, but the climate not suiting him he returned to France. He...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pottery Made Easy This book is the result of fifteen years of work and experimentation with instructional material in ceramics in the industrial-arts depart ment of Oakwood High School, in Oakwood, a suburb of Dayton, Ohio. It comprises instruction sheets on pottery, intended for junior or senior-high-school levels, which conform to modern educational principles, and are so systematized and simplified as to be suitable either in the classroom or for the self-instruction of the more mature who wish to become acquainted with this fascinating craft. Pottery is becoming more popular every year, both as a hobby and as a unit in the industrial-arts program. This growth finds justification in many ways. Being perhaps the oldest of the arts, pottery has played and continues to play a very important part in our everyday life. Its interests are broad and varied. It includes the historical, the ethmo graphic, the artistic, and the technical. In it are combined the skills of the craftsman, the artist, and the scientist, for the true potter must possess deft hands, know design, and be something of a chemist, a geologist, and a physicist. It has been said that pottery records the touch and the feeling of the worker better than can be done in most other crafts, and that it carries art into the common things of life, combining the useful with the beautiful. It is an activity in which art and skill are everything - the material nothing. It is a craft in which creative work can be made most enduring. It Widens the viewpoint of the student, and allows him to explore further into the field of industrial activity. It affords interesting opportunities for art training in several wholly different types of decoration, and provides a leisure-time hobby of absorbing interest. Book excerpt: An in-depth portrait of the life and work of Shoji Hamada, one of the key figures behind the development of studio pottery in the 20th century, and the legacy he left. Shoji Hamada was one of the seminal figures in 20th century ceramics. Along with the British potter Bernard Leach, he was instrumental in the development of the international Studio Pottery movement in the early 1900s. Their dramatic influences are still felt today, particularly in the United States and Great Britain. Hamada, also a major figure in Japan's folk art revival, was designated a 'Living National Treasure' by the Japanese government in 1955 and awarded the Order of Culture in 1968. Shoji Hamada is an ebullient and fascinating portrait of a great potter, tracing his place in the ceramic tradition and revealing a keen perception of his energetic lifestyle, dazzling work cycle, and intriguing specifics about the firing of his kilns. The text and over 200 new colour photographs from Peterson's stay at Hamada's compound in 1970 present a wealth of detail about techniques and processes. Equally important are the author's insights depicting Hamada's bequest to us: one whose life was concentrated toward the perpetuation and achievement of fundamental, unchanging and universal values and goals. In this completely re-designed and updated version of her classic book, Susan Peterson brings together the East-West connection personified by Hamada and Leach. In a completely new concluding chapter, she assesses Hamada's ongoing legacy to the world of studio pottery. This is an authoritative account of one of the towering figures in the ceramics world by one of the first people to welcome him to America in the early 1950s. The book is a must for anyone interested in the evolvement of hand pottery and the dynamics of ceramics in general.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Manufacture of Pottery Among Savage RacesAs the stages of growth of an indivi dual animal may be determined by the study of many individuals in differ ent degrees of development, so may the progressive steps in the evo lution of an art be traced out, with greater or less accuracy, by exam ining that art as practised by peoples of different states of advancement. Materials for the study of pottery in this way are wanting, not only be cause the collections are insufficient, but because the study of an art involves the investigation not only of the pro ducts and their applications, but also of the processes employed in its practise.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
