Book Synopsis The Sistine Chapel by : Ulrich Pfisterer
Download or read book The Sistine Chapel written by Ulrich Pfisterer and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2018 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of the Sistine Chapel, decorated by artists who competed with one another and commissioned by popes who were equally competitive, is a complex fabric of thematic, chronological, and artistic references. Four main campaigns were undertaken to decorate the chapel between 1481 and 1541, and with each new addition, fundamental themes found increasingly concrete expression. One overarching theme plays a central role in the chapel: the legitimization of papal authority, as symbolized by two keys—one silver, one gold—to the kingdom of heaven. The Sistine Chapel: Paradise in Rome is a concise, informative account of the Sistine Chapel. In unpacking this complex history, Ulrich Pfisterer reveals the remarkable unity of the images in relation to theology, politics, and the intentions of the artists themselves, who included such household names as Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Through a study of the main campaigns to adorn the Sistine Chapel, Pfisterer argues that the art transformed the chapel into a pathway to the kingdom of God, legitimizing the absolute authority of the popes. First published in German, the prose comes to life in English in the deft hands of translator David Dollenmayer.

Book Synopsis Il segreto del potere by : Damiano Palano
Download or read book Il segreto del potere written by Damiano Palano and published by Rubbettino Editore. This book was released on 2018-09-10T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Classical Pasts by : James I. Porter
Download or read book Classical Pasts written by James I. Porter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "classical" is used to describe everything from the poems of Homer to entire periods of Greek and Roman antiquity. But just how did the concept evolve? This collection of essays by leading classics scholars from the United States and Europe challenges the limits of the current understanding of the term. The book seeks not to arrive at a final definition, but rather to provide a cultural history of the concept by exploring how the meanings of "classical" have been created, recreated, and rejected over time. The book asks questions that have been nearly absent from the scholarly literature. Does "classical" refer to a specific period of history or to the artistic products of that time? How has its definition changed? Did those who lived in classical times have some understanding of what the term "classical" has meant? How coherent, consistent, or even justified is the term? The book's introduction provides a generous theoretical and historical overview. It is followed by eleven chapters in which the contributors argue for the existence not of a single classical past, but of multiple, competing classical pasts. The essays address a broad range of topics--Homer and early Greek poetry and music, Isocrate, Hellenistic and Roman art, Cicero and Greek philosophy, the history of Latin literature, imperial Greek literature, and more. The most up-to-date and challenging treatment of the topic available, this collection will be of lasting interest to students and scholars of ancient and modern literature, art, and cultural history.

Book Synopsis Les Académies dans l'Europe humaniste by : Marc Deramaix
Download or read book Les Académies dans l'Europe humaniste written by Marc Deramaix and published by Librairie Droz. This book was released on 2008 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
