Book Synopsis Indigenous Postgraduate Education by : Karen Trimmer
Download or read book Indigenous Postgraduate Education written by Karen Trimmer and published by IAP. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Indigenous participation in postgraduate education. The collaborating editors, from the contexts of Australian, Canadian and Nordic postgraduate education, have brought together voices of Indigenous postgraduate students and researchers about strategies to support postgraduate education for Indigenous students globally and to promote sustainable solution-focused and change-focused strategies to support Indigenous postgraduate students. The role of higher education institutions in meeting the needs of Indigenous students is considered by contributing scholars, including issues related to postgraduate education pedagogies, flexible learning and technologies. On a more fundamental level the book provides a valuable resource by giving voice to Indigenous postgraduate students themselves who share directly the stories of their experience, their inspirations and difficulties in undertaking postgraduate study. This component of the book gives precedence to the issues most relevant and important to students themselves for consideration by universities and researchers. Bringing the topic and the voices of Indigenous students clearly into the public domain provides a catalyst for discussion of the issues and potential strategies to assist future Indigenous postgraduate students. This book will assist higher education providers to develop understanding of how Indigenous postgraduate students and researchers negotiate research cultures and agendas that permeate higher education from the past to ensure the experience of postgraduate students is both rich in regard to data to be collected and culturally safe in approach; what connections, gaps and contradictions occur at the intersections between past models of postgraduate study and emerging theories around intercultural perspectives, including the impact of cultural and linguistic differences on Indigenous students' learning experiences; how Indigenous students’ and researchers’ personal and professional understandings, beliefs and experiences about what typifies knowledge and research or adds value to postgraduate studies are constructed, shared or challenged; and how higher education institutions manage the potential challenges and risks of developing pedagogies to ensure that they give voice and power to Indigenous postgraduate students.

Book Synopsis International Student Engagement in Higher Education by : Margaret Kettle
Download or read book International Student Engagement in Higher Education written by Margaret Kettle and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hand-in-hand with the continuing drive to recruit international students to Western universities goes an interest in student engagement. However, it is often unclear exactly what is meant by engagement. This book goes beyond the policy rhetoric to provide a practice-based explication of international student engagement and its enabling institutional conditions. By utilising a social practice conceptual model, the book explains the multiple dimensions of engagement that are often conflated in policy: the antecedents to engagement, the actions of engaging, and the achievements and outcomes of engagement. As a result, the book is able to address issues such as how English comes to matter in international student academic practice; the teaching and assessment approaches that promote international student engagement; and the metacognitive, cognitive and affective strategies that international students use to achieve academic and personal transformation.

It further explores the way in which international students become disconnected from the family and friends they left behind at home, as well as from local communities. Drawing on a decade worth of research into the social, cultural, real and digital spaces occupied by international students in Australia, the book also reflects on the biggest challenge humanity has faced in a hundred years; the COVID-19 global pandemic. It considers the impact that the decisions made by the Australian government and international education stakeholders in response to this evolving crisis have had on international students. This book will be of interest to academics and stakeholders involved in international education and working with international students.
Book Synopsis Dear People in the Yellow House by : Dave Kardee
Download or read book Dear People in the Yellow House written by Dave Kardee and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just when Dave thought things couldn't get any worse, the world proved him wrong. This is nothing like other coming-of-age stories you have read before. After moving to a -developed- country in the hopes of escaping from the memories of his encounter with a child molester, life threw even more shit at poor Dave, like racists, education scammers, druggies, homophobes, and religious freaks. Oh, and yes, even more pedophiles! Despite all the challenges, an unexpected act of kindness gave Dave the courage to feel love again and somehow, the whole thing turned out to be the weirdest investment lesson ever. --- --- --- Written as a series of letters addressed to a neighboring family, Dear People in the Yellow House is a raw, gritty, and heart-felt confession of past pain and hopes of future joy. In a tale that spans two continents, Dave graphically details the poor judgment, betrayal, and manipulation he faced at the hands of those who were supposed to care for him, as well as horrifying experiences with a justice system that has lost its own sense of purpose. Through these brutally honest letters, Dave describes all that he has learned along the way: that being evil is a choice, and that you can avoid getting hurt by those who chose to be evil only through being diligent and prudently managing your risks and those of the people who matter to you the most. A must-read for families about to send their loved ones abroad and anyone with mini-adults they care about. Seriously, no one should have to endure these predicaments the way Dave did. --- --- --- Visit us at: www.davekardee.com

Book Synopsis International Student Mobility by : Jasper Kun-Ting Hsieh
Download or read book International Student Mobility written by Jasper Kun-Ting Hsieh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Student Mobility presents an autoethnographic study, which follows a group of non-English speaking international students from Taiwan during a period of study in Australia. The study examines the ways in which the students’ sense of identity shifts over time, and why this happens. Hsieh engages Pierre Bourdieu’s notions of capital, habitus and field to develop an understanding of complexity of identity movements and asks to what extent the students see themselves as culturally and linguistically ‘international’, both during their time abroad and upon their return home. Perfect for researchers and advanced students interested in international higher education, International Student Mobility is also an insightful read for those investigating the experiences of Chinese-speaking international students.
