Book excerpt: The main objective of this program during the final reporting period was to investigate the fatigue behavior of a (02/90/ + or - 45)s AS/3501-5A Gr/ Ep laminate through proof testing. The primary emphasis was on the delineation of the effect of proof test on the residual strength and life, the establishment of strength-life relations, and the identification of sources of scatter in strength and life. The test program consisted of static tests, tension-tension fatigue tests preceded by proof tests, and examinations of failure characteristics. Major findings can be summarized as follows: (1) Proof tests have little effect on the residual strength and life; (2) A relation exists between strength and life such that a statically stronger specimen has a longer life; (3) A minimum life can be assured by a proof test; (4) A higher modulus is an indication of a higher strength and longer life; (5) What distinguishes a typical static failure mode from a typical fatigue failure mode is the lack of delamination in the former; (6) At a moderate fatigue stress, the failure mode changes from a static failure mode to a typical fatigue failure mode around 20, 000 cycles; and (7) A delamination surface consists of shiny and dull areas. The shiny area has bare fibers whereas the dull area only has fiber traces in the epoxy.

Book excerpt: There is now a significant body of literature that provides a fairly detailed account of the types of damage that commonly develop during the tensile and compressive fatigue loading of high-modulus fibrous composite laminates. Although this body of information is by no means complete, many detailed descriptions of microevents that accompany such loadings are available, and some models have been developed, including successful attempts to represent and predict the stiffness changes which accompany certain types of damage. However, at least two basic and essential questions concerning such fatigue response remain unanswered. First, exactly how does damage reduce laminate strength during long-term fatigue loading? And, second, how does damage (during a long-term fatigue test) combine to cause the fracture event which defines the life of a laminate? The present paper addresses these two questions. Laminates of several types and materials were loaded in cyclic tension or compression at load levels which corresponded to long times to failure. At these "high cycle" levels, the reduction in residual strength was maximized. The corresponding damage states were monitored using an array of nondestructive and destructive techniques. Special attention was given to the damage states that developed just prior to failure. Various concepts and models were applied to the interpretation of the data. Damage development in tension and compression was contrasted.

Book excerpt: This report is Vol. I of a 2-part final report on the activities which were conducted under Contract No. F33615-81-3225. The general objective of this program was to investigate the precise nature of the damage events caused by cyclic (fatigue) loading of composite laminates that are directly related to fracture of those laminates, to develop a conceptual understanding of how those damage events reduce the residual strength of the laminates, and to determine how the collective damage condition following long-term cyclic loading precipitates the final fracture event. The program was conducted in four phases: (1) the development of fatigue damage during long-term cyclic loading was investigated in such a way that the damage events which occur quite late in the fatigue life of the material, just prior to fracture, were identified and characterized; (2) the special contribution and nature of fiber fracture was investigated; (3) the nature of the collective damage condition which precipitates the fracture event under long-term fatigue loading was investigated; (4) a philosophy of fracture in composite laminates following severe damage development due to cyclic loading was developed. A wide variety of destructive and nondestructive experimental evaluation schemes were used in the program, and several analytical efforts were conducted to support the experimental activities.

Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive review of its kind on the long-term behaviour of composite materials and structures subjected to time variable mechanical, thermal, and chemical influences, a subject of critical importance to the design, development, and certification of high performance engineering structures. Specific topics examined include damage, damage characterization, and damage mechanics; fatigue testing and evaluation; fatigue behaviour of short and long fibre reinforced polymer and metal matrix materials; viscoelastic and moisture effects; delamination; statistical considerations; the modeling of cumulative damage development; and life prediction. The volume provides an extensive presentation of data, discussions, and comparisons on the behaviour of the major types of material systems in current use, as well as extensive analysis and modeling (including the first presentation of work not found elsewhere). The book will be of special interest to engineers concerned with reliability, maintainability, safety, certification, and damage tolerance; to materials developers concerned with making materials for long-term service, especially under severe loads and environments, and to lecturers, students, and researchers involved in material system design, performance, solid mechanics, fatigue, durability, and composite materials. The scope of the work extends from entry level material to the frontiers of the subject.

Edited by two leading authorities in the field, this book summarises key recent research on design, manufacture and performance of composite components for aerospace structures. Part one reviews the design and manufacture of different types of composite component. Part two discusses aspects of performance such as stiffness, strength, fatigue, impact and blast behaviour, response to temperature and humidity as well as non-destructive testing and monitoring techniques.

Book excerpt: Most of the existing works on fatigue of long fiber composite laminates approach the problem from the material point of view. These works have also been mainly on thin laminates. This is because the laminates (particularly unidirectional laminates) are considered to be homogeneous and uniform. This may or may not be true because of the heterogeneous nature of the composite (consisting of fibers and matrix and interface), and the significant variability which gives rise to random spatial variation in the properties. A composite laminate is actually both a structure and a material. For thin laminates, the structural aspect is usually scanned over and only the material aspect is focused on. This gives rise to the expectation that the laminate should behave as a material (with good homogeneity and with little variability). This has resulted in failure of many failure criteria. The importance of the structural aspect is more evident for the case of thick laminates, subjected to flexural loading while being constrained by bolts. To study the fatigue behavior of such materials (and structures), both the structural aspects and the material aspects must be taken into consideration. This is the subject of study of the present research. A combined material and structural approach, namely, the application of coupon level material properties (material level) into the 3D finite element model (structural level) is introduced and applied. By doing this, it examines the behavior of thick unidirectional glass/epoxy laminates subjected to flexural loads while being constrained by bolts. Both theoretical and experimental studies are carried out to validate each other. The theoretical part consists first of structural analysis which provides the locations of potential failure. This is followed by the application of fatigue failure criteria at these locations. Good correspondence is seen between the experimental and the theoretical results. The agreement between the results of experiments with those of developed fatigue progressive damage modeling (FPDM) shows that the combined material and structural approach is suitable to study the fatigue behavior of thick composite laminates subjected to bolt loads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The residual strength of the impact-damaged laminates can be predicted using an analytical model. Both the power law and the wearout models appear to be useful in predicting the fatigue life of the composite laminates. However, because of the slope parameter, the wearout model appears to have a slight edge over the power law model, particularly at low fatigue life and higher applied stress. The strength degradation due to cyclic loading in notched laminates was found to be extremely small up to a million cycles. The residual strength of the fatigue-damaged laminates was found to increase (in proportion to the applied maximum stress with R = 0.1) after a million fatigue cycles. Impact loading followed by cyclic loading was found to be more damaging (in reducing the life of the laminate) than the reversed sequence of loading. The magnitude of the minimum projectile velocity causing catastrophic failure in the laminates tested was found as a function of the applied stress and the number of fatigue cycles.

Book excerpt: This report presents information and experience generated during the subject investigation which provided support for the major thrust of the effort, but was not the eventual focus of the program. The activities are discussed in the context of the various experimental techniques used (and developed) to investigate the context of the damage development. Whil much of the information discussed is not complete, it is thought that a description of the experimental methods and experiences will be valuable to the technical community. Included are descriptions of virtually every experimental technique used in this program and a variety of findings not discussed elsewhere.
