Book excerpt: Old reinforced concrete buildings are vulnerable to seismic actions as they were built in accordance with non-seismic code provisions and suffer from poor material quality and/or reinforcement detailing. Moreover, many buildings were constructed without even basic design code recommendations. Consequently, their structural components, in particular beam-column joints, suffer from a wide range of deficiencies. These joints may deteriorate severely under seismic actions leading to extensive damage and collapse. The current study aims to develop an understanding of the behaviour of exterior beam-column joints with shear strength and anchorage deficiencies, and to examine a strengthening solution using post-tensioned metal strips in upgrading their performance. A multiphase experimental programme was conducted including small and medium-scale beams with inadequate lap splices loaded in tension and deficient isolated full-scale exterior beam-column joints subjected to quasi-static cyclic loading. In the beam tests, deficient splices were investigated under different confinement conditions, namely, unconfined, internally confined by steel stirrups, and externally confined by metal strips. Test parameters included concrete cover, confinement ratios, concrete quality, and bar diameter. Providing post-tensioned external confinement had a considerable impact on the behaviour, and resulted in sizable enhancements in strength and ductility. Parametric studies were conducted to identify the parameters most influencing the contribution of external confinement to bond. A bond stress-slip model is proposed that can be used to predict and simulate the behaviour of splices strengthened by post-tensioned metal strips. This model was implemented in FE models of beams and showed good correlation with the measured response. In the joint tests, four full scale exterior RC beam-column joints were tested under cyclic loading. The joints experienced severe cracking and damage including a shear mechanism in the panel zone. The joints failed prematurely at about 50% of their nominal flexural strength. Strengthening the joints with post-tensioned metal strips led to an improved performance, higher energy dissipation and more controlled shear failure along with moderate damage in the beam. An enhanced ACI-based strut-and-tie joint model is proposed and verified against the current test results and results by others. The model can be used for strengthened specimens as well as unconfined exterior joints and it accounts for different beam anchorage lengths. A quad-linear shear stress-strain model is proposed to simulate the behaviour of strengthened joints. The model was implemented in a finite element panel-zone scissors model. The scissors model was incorporated in nonlinear static and cyclic analyses. The simulated response was found to represent the joint behaviour reasonably well. A full-scale two storey reinforced concrete framed building was designed and tested on a shaking table, in cooperation with different researchers and academic partners. The building was substandard with a multiple range of deficiencies in the joint regions and connecting elements. The bare building suffered severe damage under small seismic intensities. Upgrading the structure with schemes of post-tensioned metal strips led to a considerably enhanced performance.

Book excerpt: Past earthquakes have shown examples of unsatisfactory performance of buildings using reinforced concrete structural walls as the primary lateral-force-resisting system. In the 1994 Northridge earthquake, examples can be found where walls possessed too much overstrength, leading to unintended failure of collectors and floor systems, including precast and post-tensioned construction. In the 2010 Maule Chile earthquake, many structural wall buildings sustained severe damage. Although Chilean design standards result in different reinforcement detailing than is common in U.S. walls, the failure patterns raise concerns about how well conventionally reinforced structural walls in U.S. buildings will perform during the next earthquake. Alternative wall design philosophies that offer more predictable response, with better damage control, should be investigated. After the Mw 8.8 Chile earthquake, the 15-story Alto Rio building in Concepción sustained failures near the base, overturned, and came to rest on its side. The collapse of the Alto Rio building was significant because it was designed using the Chilean Building Code NCh433. Of96, which requires the use of ACI 318-95 for design of reinforced concrete structural elements intended to resist design seismic forces. The failure of the Alto Rio building is significant for many reasons. It is the first modern shear wall building of its type to collapse by overturning during an earthquake. The building is studied using forensic data and structural models of the framing system subjected to earthquake shaking. The study identifies the likely failure mechanism and suggests areas for which design and detailing practices could be improved. The capabilities and shortcomings of the analyses to identify details of the failure mechanism are themselves important outcomes of the study. A second study explores the behavior of structural wall buildings using unbonded post-tensioned structural walls. Such walls offer the opportunity to better control yielding mechanisms and promote self-centering behavior. The study focuses on the measured responses of a full-scale, four-story building model tested on the E-Defense shaking table in Japan. The seismic force-resisting system of the test building comprised two post-tensioned (PT) precast frames in one direction and two unbonded PT precast walls in the other direction. The building was designed using the latest code requirements and design recommendations available both in Japan and the U.S., including the ACI ITG-5.2-09. The test building was subjected to several earthquake ground motions, ranging from serviceability level to near collapse. Analytical studies were carried out to test the capability of the structural models to replicate behaviors important to structural engineers, and to assess whether available analysis tools are sufficient to model dynamic behavior that results when a full-scale building is subjected to realistic earthquake ground shaking. Measured response data from such an outstanding test provides an opportunity to fully understand the response characteristics of PT walls and assess the ability of nonlinear analytical models to reproduce important global and local responses, including three-dimensional system interactions, both prior to and after loss of significant lateral strength. Moreover, this study to assess behavior and system interaction of PT walls leads to improvements of the current design ideas and performance expectations. The present study examines both the collapse of the Alto Rio building in Chile and the shaking table tests of the unbonded post-tensioned wall building in Japan. The collapse study suggests areas of improvement in current design and detailing practice. The shaking table study suggests an alternative approach to design of shear walls in buildings. Both studies demonstrate the use of modern structural analysis tools to interpret building responses to earthquake shaking. Taken together, the studies provide added confidence in earthquake simulation capabilities and demonstrate alternatives for designing earthquake-resistant buildings that use structural walls.

Book excerpt: Lessons learned from earthquakes in the last 50 years have spurred changes in building seismic code requirements, making it necessary to determine the seismic vulnerability of old military structures. This study addresses a popular type of building in high seismic zones that has lateral load-resisting systems constructed from reinforced concrete (R/C) frames with masonry infill panels. An experimental program was carried out to evaluate this structural system. Five single-story half-scale laboratory models with different numbers of bays were constructed. The five models represent: a single-bay bare frame, single-bay with concrete masonry unit (CMU) infill, single-bay with brick infill, double-bay with CMU infill, and triple-bay with brick infill. These models were fully instrumented and tested under lateral in-plane loading to failure. Non-linear finite element analyses were carried out on the experimental models. Load-deflection curves for finite element analysis (FEA) reasonably predicted experimental behavior of specimens in terms of deflection. Ultimate failure load corresponding to each specimen was predicted with accuracy. Finally, a new idealized analytical model was proposed to determine the capacity evaluation of this structural system. Post-yield behavior, residual strength, and the effects of bay multiplicity on structural behavior are also presented.
