She also loves to jam on her flute, make glitter glam headbands, and recite poetry... but you might not know that, because Blossom is also very shy! She wants to participate in school and with friends, but whenever she tries, she freezes up and plays possum instead. And playing possum is not the best way to make friends! With some gentle encouragement from her peers and her music teacher, Blossom learns that taking risks usually isn’t as bad as she fears, and can have a big payoff. She might still be shy, but she’s getting better at putting herself out there and having fun. Includes a Note to Parents and Other Caregivers by Julia Martin Burch, PhD, with more information on the cognitive-behavioral strategies Blossom uses to cope with shyness and ways to encourage your own shy child.

Book Synopsis Dead Possums Are Fair Game by : Taryn Souders
Download or read book Dead Possums Are Fair Game written by Taryn Souders and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ella has two major phobias in life: spiders and mathematics. She firmly believes that anything with more than four legs should not exist. She also believes the world would be a better place without word problems or long division. That being said, she’s fascinated by science. So when her class finds a dead opossum in the playing field one morning, she’s intrigued by rigor mortis and how long it will take for the opossum to unstiffen. Science is so much more interesting than math. Later that day, Ella is certain she must have heard wrong when her teacher announces that there will be no more math tests for the rest of the year. And she isn’t wrong—it is too good to be true. Her teacher explains that instead, the class will be having its first ever math fair. Ella’s group is assigned the topic of time conversions, something Ella’s been struggling with for a while. This is hardly Ella’s idea of fun. But Ella’s mom is quick to point out that math and science aren’t so very different—she suggests that Ella imagine she’s doing a science experiment instead of a math project. With a little imagination and some inspiration from their friend the opossum (now named Morty, short for rigor mortis), Ella and her group come up with a project that gets them excited about math—and they might even have a chance to win at the fair! Book Synopsis Possum Living: How to Live Well without a Job and With (Almost) No Money by : Dolly Freed
Download or read book Possum Living: How to Live Well without a Job and With (Almost) No Money written by Dolly Freed and published by Tin House Books. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A back-to-the-land classic” (Garden & Gun) that will “inspire you to embrace a simpler life” (O, The Oprah Magazine). In the late seventies, at the age of eighteen and with a seventh-grade education, Dolly Freed wrote Possum Living about the five years she and her father lived off the land on a half-acre lot outside of Philadelphia. At the time of its publication in 1978, Possum Living became an instant classic, known for its plucky narration and no-nonsense practical advice on how to quit the rat race and live frugally. In her delightful, straightforward, and irreverent style, Freed guides readers on how to buy and maintain a home, raise and grow their own food, cope with the law, stay healthy, save money, and more, all in the name of self-reliant, independent living. Forty years later, Possum Living remains an essential guide to going off the grid. This updated edition includes an introduction by Novella Carpenter, and new wisdom from Freed on aging, used cars, emergency funds, and how to get back in touch with yourself. Possum Living, says Freed, is about how to cook; to go fishing; to be with family, friends, and neighbors; to forage for wild berries; to enjoy a hobby; to relax; or, even better, to do nothing at all. Some of the best living, she reminds us, happens in possum time.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on Multigrade Teaching by : Linley Cornish
Download or read book Perspectives on Multigrade Teaching written by Linley Cornish and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the results of research projects carried out in relation to multigrade teaching in Australia and South Africa. Research in multigrade contexts is not commonly reported and rarely in book form. The research results have implications for multigrade teachers, government education personnel, and university teacher educators. The book also contains chapters with practical advice for multigrade teachers, including examples of multigrade teaching used in an Australian seven-grade class (kindergarten to grade 6). Other chapters contain suggestions for practical strategies a multigrade teacher can use to reduce the workload involved in planning for multiple grades. Very little is published in the area of multigrade teaching, yet the number of multigrade schools worldwide is huge. Developed countries still have a significant proportion of multigrade schools (commonly one fifth to one third of all primary schools or classes). Despite decades of centralisation of schools and expansion of transport networks, the number of these schools remains high, mostly in rural areas. Developing countries established multigrade schools in rural areas in order to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goal of Universal Primary Education. Yet, specific training to teach a multigrade class remains virtually non-existent in initial teacher education programs worldwide. The value of this book is thus to report specific research carried out in multigrade contexts but also to provide practical help for multigrade teachers. This help is needed as the teachers strive to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal of a quality education, through helping their students develop the skills and behaviours required for 21st-century learning.
Book Synopsis The Common Worlds of Children and Animals by : Affrica Taylor
Download or read book The Common Worlds of Children and Animals written by Affrica Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives and futures of children and animals are linked to environmental challenges associated with the Anthropocene and the acceleration of human-caused extinctions. This book sparks a fascinating interdisciplinary conversation about child–animal relations, calling for a radical shift in how we understand our relationship with other animals and our place in the world. It addresses issues of interspecies and intergenerational environmental justice through examining the entanglement of children’s and animal’s lives and common worlds. It explores everyday encounters and unfolding relations between children and urban wildlife. Inspired by feminist environmental philosophies and indigenous cosmologies, the book poses a new relational ethics based upon the small achievements of child–animal interactions. It also provides an analysis of animal narratives in children’s popular culture. It traces the geo-historical trajectories and convergences of these narratives and of the lives of children and animals in settler-colonised lands. This innovative book brings together the fields of more-than-human geography, childhood studies, multispecies studies, and the environmental humanities. It will be of interest to students and scholars who are reconsidering the ethics of child–animal relations from a fresh perspective.
