Book Synopsis Direct Measurement of the Hyperfine Structure Interval of Positronium Using High-Power Millimeter Wave Technology by : Akira Miyazaki
Download or read book Direct Measurement of the Hyperfine Structure Interval of Positronium Using High-Power Millimeter Wave Technology written by Akira Miyazaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the author develops new high-power millimeter wave techniques for measuring the hyperfine structure of positronium (Ps-HFS) directly for the first time in the world. Indirect measurement of Ps-HFS in the literature might have systematic uncertainties related to the use of a static magnetic field. Development of the millimeter wave devices supports the precise determination of Ps-HFS by directly measuring the Breit-Wigner resonant transition from o-Ps to p-Ps without the magnetic field. At the same time, the width of the measured Breit-Wigner resonance directly provides the lifetime of p-Ps. This measurement is the first precise spectroscopic experiment involving the magnetic dipole transition and high-power millimeter waves. The development of a gyrotron and a Fabry-Pérot cavity is described as providing an effective power of over 20 kW, which is required to cause the direct transition from o-Ps to p-Ps. Those values measured by the newly developed millimeter wave device pave the way for examining the discrepancy observed between conventional indirect experiments on Ps-HFS and the theoretical predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics.
Book Synopsis Positronium Chemistry by : James Green
Download or read book Positronium Chemistry written by James Green and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positronium Chemistry focuses on the methodologies, reactions, processes, and transformations involved in positronium chemistry. The publication first offers information on positrons and positronium and experimental methods, including mesonic atoms, angular correlation measurements, annihilation spectra, and statistical errors in delayed coincidence measurements. The text then ponders on positrons in gases and solids. The manuscript takes a look at the theoretical chemistry of positronium and positronium chemistry in gases. Topics include quenching, annihilation spectrum, delayed coincidence method, rate of two-photon and three-photon annihilations, and angular correlation of two-photon distribution. The book also considers positronium chemistry in the condensed state, as well as liquid gases, organic solids, and aqueous solutions. The publication is a primary reference for chemists and readers interested in positronium chemistry.

Book Synopsis Positronium by : Michael A. Stroscio
Download or read book Positronium written by Michael A. Stroscio and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For typical magnetospheric densities, free positrons have a lifetime of between one million and one trillion seconds. A portion of the injected positrons undergo free annihilation and a portion form positronium. Results are given of the theoretical calculations of positronium properties without presenting the intermediate steps that depend on a knowledge of quantum electrodynamics. This paper is a review of the calculations of positronium state (1) decay rates, (2) energy levels, and (3) external field behavior. Theoretical results are compared with only the latest experimental results. The coverage is substantially complete from the pre-experimental years (1930 to 1950) to the present (1974). Emphasis is placed on stating final theoretical results and giving references to original work rather than giving a step-by-step account of the calculations. (Modified author abstract).
