Book Synopsis Positron Annihilation by : A.T. Steward
Download or read book Positron Annihilation written by A.T. Steward and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positron Annihilation focuses on the process of positron annihilation in different environments. Partitioned into two parts with 42 chapters, the book contains the contributions of authors who have done research on the annihilation of positrons, which brought about valuable information on the properties of matter. The first part of the book deals with lengthy review articles, including a survey of the physics of positron annihilation; positron annihilation in metals and the theory involved in the process; and positron annihilation in alkali halides and ionic crystals. Positronium formation and interaction in gases, molecular substances, and ionic crystals are also given attention. Gaseous positronics and positron annihilation in condensed gases and liquids are also discussed. The second part of the book focuses on developments on positron annihilation and the direction of research on this field. The studies concentrate on positron annihilation in various crystals, metals, mercury, liquefied gases, helium, and metal oxides. Numerical representations and analyses are presented to support the processes involved. The book can best serve the interest of those who want to explore further the annihilation of positrons.

Book Synopsis Introduction to the Theory of Liquid Metals by : T. E. Faber
Download or read book Introduction to the Theory of Liquid Metals written by T. E. Faber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-26 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1972 book brings together the results of a decade of research into the physics of liquid metals and alloys, a subject of growing interest to physicists, metallurgists and materials scientists at the time. It covers a wide range of phenomena, and for the benefit of newcomers to the field, Dr Faber provides a clear exposition of the physical properties involved, and the relevant theoretical arguments are developed in sufficient detail for an experimentalist who carries rather little in the way of mathematical equipment to follow them. Experienced researchers will appreciate Dr Faber's critical approach and the many previously unpublished results which he has included. The mass of experimental data which he has brought together and the comprehensive bibliography will make the book of great use to readers of both classes.

Book Synopsis Positrons in Solids by : P. Hautojärvi
Download or read book Positrons in Solids written by P. Hautojärvi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In condensed matter initially fast positrons annihilate after having reached equi librium with the surroundings. The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field. Nowadays it is becoming part of the "stock-in-trade" of experimental physics.
Book Synopsis Dislocations in Solids by : Hideji Suzuki
Download or read book Dislocations in Solids written by Hideji Suzuki and published by VSP. This book was released on 1985-12 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the Proceedings of the Yamada Conference IX on Dislocations in Solids, held in August 1984 in Tokyo. The purpose of the conference was two-fold: firstly to evaluate the increasing data on basic properties of dislocations and their interaction with other types of defects in solids and, secondly, to increase understanding of the material properties brought about by dislocation-related phenomena. Metals and alloys, semi-conductors and ions crystals were discussed. One of the important points of contention was the electronic state at the core of dislocation. Another was the dislocation model of amorphous structure.
Download or read book Bismuth written by Ying Zhou and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bismuth (Bi) is a post-transition metal element with the atomic number of 83, which belongs to the pnictogen group elements in Period 6 in the elemental periodic table. As a heavy metal, the hazard of Bi is unusually low in contrast to its neighbors Pb and Sb. This property, along with other typical characteristics like strong diamagnetism and low thermal conductivity, makes Bi attractive in industrial applications. There are more than 100 commercial bismuth products, from pharmaceutical to industrial catalysts. Based on the wide applications of Bi materials, this book goes further and mainly focuses on the potential uses of Bi-based materials, which consist of nine chapters. In addition, a special chapter concerning the defect in bismuth is also presented.

Book Synopsis Microscopic Methods in Metals by : Ulrich Gonser
Download or read book Microscopic Methods in Metals written by Ulrich Gonser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of scientific investigation can be divided into two categories: they are either macroscopic or microscopic in nature. The former are generally older, classical methods where the sample as a whole is studied and various local prop erties are deduced by differentiation. The microscopic methods, on the other hand, have been discovered and developed more recently, and they operate for the most part on an atomistic scale. Glancing through the shelves of books on the various scientific fields, and, in particular, on the field of physical metallurgy, we are surprised at how lit tle consideration has been given to the microscopic methods. How these tools provide new insight and information is a question which so far has not at tracted much attention. Similar observations can be made at scientific confer ences, where the presentation of papers involving microscopic methods is often pushed into a far corner. This has led users of such methods to organize their own special conferences. The aim of this book is to bridge the present gap and encourage more interaction between the various fields of study and selected microscopic meth ods, with special emphasis on their suitability for investigating metals. In each case the principles of the method are reviewed, the advantages and successes pointed out, but also the shortcomings and limitations indicated.
