Book excerpt: Many people learn by doing and Positively Empowered!! is a workbook that provides 'hands on' exercises for the inward journey of recovering or discovering your positive personal power in order to live life according to your own vision. For the purpose of this workbook, personal power is a merging of self-esteem, self-confidence, self-efficacy and resiliency and it guides to greater self-knowledge in order to build a stronger personal power foundation. The exercises guide those who may feel they need an 'empowerment intervention' because they feel as though they have become 'stuck' on their life journey. It is also for those who have had their power taken from them at some point in their lives by someone using negative personal power ... which is the use of manipulation, coercion or force. For the purpose of the workbook...positive empowerment is a merging of self-esteem and self-confidence with the belief that you have the personal skills and resources to affect your life circumstances. If the messages we received in childhood from family and others (schools, churches, etc.) in our personal environment were primarily positive, we adopted positive and optimistic thinking. Our positive self-talk in turn created our positive beliefs about ourselves which led to positive personal power which is a merging of our high self-confidence, self-esteem, self-efficacy and resiliency. If the messages we received in childhood from family and others in our personal environment were primarily negative, we developed negative and pessimistic thinking. Those negative thoughts became inner self-talk and played over and over in our minds. The negative self-talk in turn created our negative beliefs about ourselves which led to negative personal power which is a merging of our low self-confidence, self-esteem, self-efficacy and resiliency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that, in line with the tenets of positive psychology in SLA and the rhetorical/relational goal theory, positive teacher-student interpersonal relationships are deemed to be of great significance for empowering students to accomplish favorable academic outcomes and to successfully learn a second/foreign language (L2), whether at its affective, behavioral, or cognitive levels. Therefore, understanding the role of teacher interpersonal behaviors and their effect on students' learning gains in the domain of SLA is of utmost importance, particularly as this line of research is at its nascent stage of development, and, as a result, available empirical evidence is still inconclusive. To address this issue, drawing on the mixed methods design, this book mainly aims to, first, empirically scrutinize the role of “5Cs” positive teacher interpersonal variables (i.e., care, clarity, closeness, confirmation, and credibility) in L2 students' affective, behavioral, and cognitive learning outcomes through the mediation of student-perceived learner empowerment in the L2 context of Iran. Second, it is intended to show how L2 teacher educators, teachers, and materials developers, among other key educational stakeholders, can facilitate the provision of interpersonally rich language learning environments with the ultimate goal of enhancing students' L2 learning.

Book excerpt: Science fiction and fantasy are often thought of as stereotypically male genres, yet both have a long and celebrated history of female creators, characters, and fans. In particular, the science fiction and fantasy heroine is a recognized figure made popular in media such as Alien, The Terminator, and Buffy, The Vampire Slayer. Though imperfect, she is strong and definitely does not need to be saved by a man. This figure has had an undeniable influence on The Hunger Games, Divergent, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and many other, more recent female-led book and movie franchises.Despite their popularity, these fictional women have received inconsistent scholarly interest. This collection of new essays is intended to help fill a gap in the serious discussion of women and gender in science fiction and fantasy. The contributors are scholars, teachers, practicing writers, and other professionals in fields related to the genre. Critically examining the depiction of women and gender in science fiction and fantasy on both page and screen, they focus on characters who are as varied as they are interesting, and who range from vampire slayers to time travelers, witches, and spacefarers.

Yet this revealing new book demonstrates that they form a fundamental component of the media industries, with the decline of hard news being accompanied by the rise of gossip and celebrity. In addition to making a substantial contribution to our understanding of the cultural function of celebrity, Fame Games outlines how the promotion industry has developed and how celebrity is produced, promoted, and traded within the Australian media. While their analysis will inform academic debates on media practice internationally, the authors have taken the unique step of investigating the workings of the Australian promotion industry from within. Interviews with over 20 publicists, promoters, agents, managers, and magazine editors have provided a wealth of information about the processes through which celebrity in Australia is produced.
