Book excerpt: In solving the Boltzmann transport equation, most discrete ordinates codes calculate the source term by first approximating the scattering cross section using a Legendre polynomial expansion. Such expansions are insufficient when scattering is anisotropic and the Legendre expansion is truncated prematurely. This can lead to nonphysical negative cross sections, negative source terms and negative angular fluxes. While negative sources are problematic for standard discrete ordinates methods leading to poor convergence or convergence to incorrect results, they are of particular concern to exponential methods, causing such calculations to fail. We've developed and tested a new technique to solve this problem called the Monte Carlo Facet Method. This method is an extension of standard Monte Carlo techniques. It guarantees non-negative cross sections at all directional ordinates. It also ensures within group and next group scatter. This dissertation outlines previous attempts to handle anisotropic scattering to achieve non-negative sources. It develops the theory of the Monte Carlo facet method and its first angular moment conservation. Results are presented examining the scattering matrices for various materials, and finally demonstrating that these scattering matrices perform exceptionally well in a multi-group, anisotropic, unstructured mesh discrete ordinates transport code.

Book excerpt: A new method for approximating anisotropic, multi-group scatter cross sections for use in discretized and Monte Carlo multi-group neutron transport is presented. The new method eliminates unphysical artifacts such as negative group scatter cross sections and falsely positive cross sections. Additionally, when combined with the discrete elements angular quadrature method, the new cross sections eliminate the lack of angular support in the discrete ordinates quadrature method. The new method generates piecewise-average group-to-group scatter cross sections. The accuracy and efficiency for calculating the discrete elements cross sections has improved by many orders of magnitude compared to DelGrande and Mathews previous implementation. The new cross sections have extended the discrete elements method to all neutron-producing representations in the Evaluated Nuclear Data Files. The new cross section method has been validated and tested with the cross section generation code, NJOY. Results of transport calculations using discrete elements, discrete ordinates, and Monte Carlo methods for two, one-dimensional slab geometry problems are compared.

Book excerpt: The need has arisen for a comprehensive handbook for engineers faced with problems of radiation shielding design. Although there are several excellent books on shielding, they either do not give enough consideration to the many practical design problems, or are limited to special aspects of the subject. Recognizing the universal need, the International Atomic Energy Agency decided to sponsor the publication ofthe present Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shield ing. At the first editorial discussions it was agreed that, if such a book were to be undertaken, it would be appropriate not only to create a useful design tool for the practising engineer but also to include well-referenced basic data for the research worker. Although trying to keep the book down to a reasonable size, the editors have aimed at a complete presentation of the subject, covering and linking both the tech nology and the science of shielding. Efforts to make terms and definitions consistent throughout have been only partially successful, owing to the continuing development of new ideas. However, inconsisten cies that could not be eliminated are identified whenever possible.
