Book excerpt: In position-based routing algorithms, the nodes use the geographical information to make routing decisions. Recent research in this field addresses such routing algorithms in two-dimensional (2D) space. However, in real applications, the nodes may be distributed in three-dimensional (3D) space. Transition from 2D to 3D is not always easy, since many problems in 3D are significantly harder than their 2D counterparts. This book focuses on providing reliable and efficient position-based routing algorithms with the associated pre-processing algorithms for various 3D ad hoc networks. The first part of this book proposes a constant time algorithms that construct an independent dominating set and connected dominating set of a Unit Disk Graph in a 3D environment. The second part of the book proposes an implementation of 3D versions of many current 2D position-based routing algorithms in addition of creating many new algorithms that are specially designed for a 3D environment. It has been showed that these new routing algorithms can achieve nearly guaranteed delivery while discovering routes significantly closer in length to a shortest path.

Book excerpt: During the last one and a half decades, wireless sensor networks have witnessed significant growth and tremendous development in both academia and industry. A large number of researchers, including computer scientists and engineers, have been interested in solving challenging problems that span all the layers of the protocol stack of sensor networking systems. Several venues, such as journals, conferences, and workshops, have been launched to cover innovative research and practice in this promising and rapidly advancing field. Because of these trends, I thought it would be beneficial to provide our sensor networks community with a comprehensive reference on as much of the findings as possible on a variety of topics in wireless sensor networks. As this area of research is in continuous progress, it does not seem to be a reasonable solution to keep delaying the publication of such reference any more. This book relates to the second volume and focuses on the advanced topics and applications of wireless sensor networks. Our rationale is that the second volume has all application-specific and non-conventional sensor networks, emerging techniques and advanced topics that are not as matured as what is covered in the first volume. Thus, the second volume deals with three-dimensional, underground, underwater, body-mounted, and societal networks. Following Donald E. Knuth’s above-quoted elegant strategy to focus on several important fields (The Art of Computer Programming: Fundamental Algorithms, 1997), all the book chapters in this volume include up-to-date research work spanning various topics, such as stochastic modeling, barrier and spatiotemporal coverage, tracking, estimation, counting, coverage and localization in three-dimensional sensor networks, topology control and routing in three-dimensional sensor networks, underground and underwater sensor networks, multimedia and body sensor networks, and social sensing. Most of these major topics can be covered in an advanced course on wireless sensor networks. This book will be an excellent source of information for graduate students majoring in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or any related discipline. Furthermore, computer scientists, researchers, and practitioners in both academia and industry will find this book useful and interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider the problem of finding a path from a source to a destination node in a set of mobile wireless nodes. Many solutions to this problem proposed in the literature fall into the position-based routing paradigm, where in each step, the decision of which node to go to next is based only on the position or geographic coordinates of the current node c, its neighboring nodes N (c), and the destination node d . We propose several new randomized position-based algorithms for routing in mobile ad hoc networks. Our algorithms combine the greedy heuristic of minimizing the distance remaining to the destination and the directional heuristic of staying close to the direction of the destination with the use of randomization to retain some flexibility in the chosen routes. We classify our randomized algorithms based on the strategy they use to define a subset of neighboring nodes as the candidate nodes. The sector-based algorithms select the candidate nodes from a specified sector, whereas the AB (above-below) algorithms choose two candidate nodes, one from above and the other from below the line between the current node and the destination. On convex subdivisions, a sub-class of AB algorithms can be shown to deliver packets to their destinations with probability 1. Our experiments on unit disk graphs, and their associated Yao graphs, Gabriel graphs, and Planarized Local Delaunay Triangulations, show that the delivery rates of all the randomized algorithms we study are significantly better than the deterministic greedy and directional routing algorithms. For some of the algorithms we propose, this improvement comes at the price of only a small deterioration in the stretch factor of the route. Thus, some of our algorithms obtain a good balance between the delivery rate and the stretch factor.

Book excerpt: An ad hoc network comprises a set of computing devices, often mobile, that communicate using wireless transmissions with the devices within their transmission range. These devices or nodes are able to detect the presence of other nodes in their transmission range as well route packets on behalf of other nodes. Hence, the network does not need to depend on any predefined infrastructure. This lack of infrastructure makes the problem of routing and packet forwarding a challenging task in such networks. To carry out this task in an efficient and scalable manner, several authors have proposed position-based routing algorithms. Position-based routing algorithms utilize the position or location of the destination node to inform routing decisions. However, obtaining the accurate position of the destination may not be feasible in some settings. In this thesis, we consider the problem of routing in an ad hoc network where the source node knows the approximate position of the destination node, but is uncertain about its exact current location. We investigate two approaches to this problem: one, based on a traversal of the faces of a planar sub-graph of the graph representing the network, and the second, based on flooding a limited area of the graph that represents the region the destination is likely to be found. We propose several variants of both approaches, and do extensive simulations to analyze the performance of the algorithms. Our results indicate that a simple modification of the basic flooding approach yields the best trade-off for optimizing delivery rate, stretch factor, as well as transmission cost. If however, delivery is required to be guaranteed, then a variant of the face tree traversal approach that we propose has the best performance.

Book excerpt: In recent years, a lot of work has been done in an effort to incorporate Swarm Intelligence (SI) techniques in building an adaptive routing protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.
