Book Synopsis Montrealers by : Jean-François Nadeau
Download or read book Montrealers written by Jean-François Nadeau and published by Juniper Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 100 years of images that reveal the changing face of a city and its inhabitants. This commemorative book shows Montrealers, from the beginnings of photography through to 1976, in images that capture the fragility of a moment, fleeting, yet frozen in time. Through hundreds of snapshots, this book reveals the face of an entire social world. Some photos are the work of masters of photography such as Robert Notman, Henri Cartier-Bresson, John Max, Alain Chagnon, Yousuf Karsh and many more. Others were taken by more or less everyday photographers, generally unaware that they were providing future generations with an invaluable glimpse of humanity and a fragment of eternity. These photographs are accompanied by commentary on the photographer’s work, if one exists, and on fascinating characteristics of the world they unveil to us. The photos are grouped under different themes: housing, culture, streets, religion, work, transportation, First Nations and more. This wholly unique book contains more than 400 original photographs, many previously unpublished or unknown.
Book Synopsis Literature and Painting In Quebec by : William J. Berg
Download or read book Literature and Painting In Quebec written by William J. Berg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique study explores how Quebec's landscapes have been represented in both literature and visual art throughout the centuries, from the writing of early explorers such as Cartier and Champlain to work by prominent contemporary authors and artists from the province. William J. Berg traces recurrent images and themes within these creations through the most significant periods in the development of a Quebecois identity that was threatened initially by the wilderness and indigenous populations, and later by the dominance of British and American influences. Focusing on the interplay between nature and culture in landscape representation, Literature and Painting in Quebec contends that both have reflected and fashioned the meaning of French-Canadian nationhood. As such, Literature and Painting in Quebec presents a new perspective to approach the notion of national identity, a quest that few groups have engaged in more persistently than the Quebecois.

Book Synopsis Ruling by Schooling Quebec by : Bruce Curtis
Download or read book Ruling by Schooling Quebec written by Bruce Curtis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruling by Schooling Quebec provides a rich and detailed account of colonial politics from 1760 to 1841 by following repeated attempts to school the people. This first book since the 1950s to investigate an unusually complex period in Quebec’s educational history extends the sophisticated method used in author Bruce Curtis’s double-award-winning Politics of Population. Drawing on a mass of archival material, the study shows that although attempts to govern Quebec by educating its population consumed huge amounts of public money, they had little impact on rural ignorance: while near-universal literacy reigned in New England by the 1820s, at best one in three French-speaking peasant men in Quebec could sign his name in the insurrectionary decade of the 1830s. Curtis documents educational conditions on the ground, but also shows how imperial attempts to govern a tumultuous colony propelled the early development of Canadian social science. He provides a revisionist account of the pioneering investigations of Lord Gosford and Lord Durham.
